Who We Are: Eight young professionals guys (mostly doctors) with extensive travel experience in South America.

What We Seek: A House or a couple apartments to rent for our annual vacation in early April 2007.

Apartment rental seems quite difficult in Caracas. Is the same true for housing? We will find a hotel as a last resort, but we typically prefer the comfort and convenience of a house or apartment. We appreciate any and all advice.

I'm getting very mixed reports about the safety of Caracas. Some have said it's an amazing city and some have said to avoid it like the plague. I'm hoping to stay there for a few days later in the year while travelling S.America. Can you recommend a hotel that is $25 approx or under per night in a reasonable area of the city please?
I'm also well aware every city in the world has its safety issues but are there areas besides the Barrios to be avoided.

Anyone know if and where I can unlock my fone (uses SIM card), or anyone leaving Caracas and selling their mobile?

I would like to go up the El Avila, either by foot or telefico. how long does it take to hike up? is it easy without a guide? and how do i get to the foot of the hill from the center of Caracas?

TO SEE: Since we only have 1 day, what are the important things and places that we must see and do???

TO EAT: We love trying new things and would love any recommendations on cafes or restaurants that are reasonably cheap!

TO DANCE: If we aren't TOO TIRED, then we will want to dance and have fun at night! Where is the best place to go?!

TO SHOP: I know there is a big mall called El Sambil Mall. Is there any other places we should go to buy things? Also, what is a typical Venezuela gift/souvenir????

ABOUT TRANSPORTATION, is there anything else we can take besides a taxi? After reading several postings, it appears that taxis are quite expensive. Any suggestions on alternatives????

Hi guys,

I'm, a teacher planning to move to Caracas for a year. I need to find an apartment within the next week or so, preferable mear Chacaito, but anywhere near the Metro should be fine (I don't have a car).

I won't be making a lot of money, but I'd prefer not to live in a room in someone's house, unless it's an annex or a single landlady. I know apartments are expensive and scarce, so I'm willing to share with another long-term renter.

Any help would be appreciated~

Hi: Does anyone have any information about purchasing Aeropostal tickets on line,(from outside of venezuela)I am trying to do so but cannot, seems that the site is unable to process credit card transactions, even though the facility is there. I urgently need to buy a ticket to travel from Trinidad & Tobago to Caracas

I moved from Venezuela some 15 years ago and now visit every 2 or 3 yaers...
I hear the highway from the airport and the city is very dangerous at night if arriving by/near midnight...

Is it better to stay at a hotel near the airport and then continue to Caracas in daylight?

I also hear that you should book your car service in advance and rather not do it at the airport...

is is that bad now?

Last but not least my family lives in San Jose, whih used to be middle class at teh time I grew up...
I hear that San Jose and or El Silencio are very unsafe now and that you should take taxis and avoid walking on teh street even during daylight...

I am from New York City, I was planning on visiting Caracas for NYE 2007 (December 29th), I will be traveling with 1 friend, who is male/Iranian american. Is this to risky to visit now?
We were planning to stay in the Radisson which is apparently in an upscale "safer" area of Caracas.
Any thoughts? Advice?

Our main interest is the nightlife, and some day time exploring.

Anyone know of an airline that flies from caracas to just over the border in Brazil(Boa Vista or Manaus or anywhere else that would be cheap). I am looking to get a TAM or Varig airpass and just need to get into Brazil from Venezuela to use it to get to Rio.
I know that I could bus from Caracas to the border but it seems long and maybe somewhat dangerous.

It doesnt seem like any of the Venezuelan airlines fly direct to Brazil and the connecting flight are very expensive.

Any help would be appreciated.

I visited Venezuela in the 80's. We went to El Hatillo and I purchased a large wool woven scenic (blanket) wall hanging which I still have and love. I am wondering are they still available and where I could purchase some more over the Internet if possible and their prices. The one I have is depicting a group of village people in a market with mountains and buildings behind them.

Hey all, does anyone know what the cheapest airline to get from Caracas to New Zealand? I have only found Lan Chile, which is more direct, but doesn't allow me to get a price online, and I am in Sweden where there are no regional Lan offices. I also see Air NZ flies via the States, but this seems a bit roundabout and I'm guessing more expensive as a result. Any ideas welcome! Cheers!

I'm planning to be in Venezuela for this summer's Copa America soccer tournament. I am impressed with how much money the nation is sinking into its infrastructure and either building new ones or upgrading several stadiums. Since it looks like stadiums across the country will be used, I was wondering if Caracas would be the best hub? Are the other cities accessible by public transportation?

I will be travelling to caracas (dec 3-20) and am looking for some advice. First, I would like to find a reasonably priced bed and breakfast in a decent area. I would like to find a dance school where I could take a few salsa lessons. To go with these lessons I will need to know where the clubs are...30- 35 crowd. Thanks for your help.

I'm heading to venezuela for 6 weeeks and I'm reading some scary stories about the airports and taxi's and kidnapping....i know this stuff exists everywhere...i been to rio and brazil for 6 weeks...but, how bad is it in venezuela...do you feel safe at the beach towns...santa fe, peurto colombia, los roques....it is just caracas...

who has some input on Venezuela...
