I want to fly over to Montevideo for a day from B.A. in October (14th or 15th. If I had only 9 hours in the city, what 3 sites should I see when I am there? And, are there any good flea markets open during the week?

Montevideo Safety & Nice Walking Areas - Montevideo
Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 10:37 AM UTC
Hey all - I'm in the process of planning a trip to Montevideo and I'd just like some extra information on safety there..e.g. how safe is it to walk with a camera in parts of the city...what areas to avoid...what areas not to miss.

Also, what are some areas where it's nice to just walk for a while and enjoy the weather, and are there any possible side trips from Motevideo besides Colonia that are worth checking out? Any information would be helpful - thanks!!

Montevideo Travel Montevideo to Igauzu or Buenes Aires
Posted: Fri January 4, 2008 03:57 PM UTC
Hi,

I'll be in Rio in October and plan to travel to Iguazu then onto Montevideo and along the coast to BA from there BUT the reviews of the bus journey from Foz de Igauzu to Montevideo are less than compelling.

Can anyone suggest a better way of doing this? After BA we plan to head up to Bolivia and that seems best from Buenes Aires, so would Rio to BA to Igauzu to Montevideo be less hassle.

I'm not fussed bussing/planes, whatever is the best value for less hassle!!

Thanks much, Gav

Montevideo Montevideo boat times and locations
Posted: Wed January 2, 2008 02:39 PM UTC
Is it possible to catch a boat from anywhere other than Buenos Aires. We are in Mar del Plata and were wondering if we could just head up the coast and maybe catch a boat from La Plata or somewhere without having to go back to BA

Montevideo Montevideo accomodation?
Posted: Thu October 25, 2007 03:47 PM UTC
Is there anyone that could give us some recommendations of an ok hotel or hostel to stay at in Montevideo? Me and my girlfriend will stay one week in the middle of november and would like to find a room for about 30-40 USD/night.
I have read that ciudad vieja is not the best place to stay at regarding safety. We would of course want to stay in an area where you can go out and eat or have a drink at the evening and therefore we were thinking about the city center. Anyone that have any suggestions?
It would be a big plus if it is within walking distance of Estadio Cenetario.
Thanks!

Montevideo 3 Months in Montevideo
Posted: Wed September 19, 2007 04:05 PM UTC
We're a Belgian married couple (68 & 64 y. old) and we'll stay in Montevideo from November 21th 2007 till February 16th 2008. From Montevideo, we plan to make some trips in Uruguay and also visit Argentina, maybe Brasil.
Two questions: could you please give us some tips about renting a car, e.g. is it more interesting to rent it for a longer period, are there local renting agencies that offer interesting rates?
Second question: is it possible to meet interesting people in Montevideo who could asssist us in spending these nearly 3 months in an interesting way?
Thank you all out there for your reactions.

Montevideo travel times, hotels, restaurants, towns, weather, etc.
Posted: Fri September 7, 2007 03:52 PM UTC
hi,
ive been reading lots of postings in uruguay forums and since there is so much good advice, im posting: my wife, 16 month-old son, and i will arrive lima oct 1. then to ba oct 3. planning ba-colonia ferry on 10/10. 2 nights in colonia, then rent a car friday, 10/12 in the morning and on 10/19 turn car in back in colonia, and ferry back to ba.
so, on 10/12 after picking up car, should we go to mvd for a night? 2 nights? thought soccer game sunday might be fun, but not mandatory. or drive colonia to atlantida (we definitely will spend at least one night there. or is weekend better in atlantida? is piriapolis worth staying in? definitely will stop and look around even if dont spend the night (either on way east or west). must see punta del este but, knowing its generally more expensive, is it better to stay somewhere close and visit, or is it worth staying there? stay in maldonado? also want to see la barra, jose ignacio, punta del diablo. probably must stay last night in colonia, or at least mvd to get back for ferry. no discos, no long fancy dinners, remember baby. he is a good traveler already, but avoiding too much daily driving, and/or too long drives can only help. thanks for any advice, especially driving times between all these places.
are these correct? colonia-mvd, 3 hours. mvd-atlantida, 1 hour. atlantida pde, 1 hour.

Montevideo Nice cheap hostel/hotel in Uruguay
Posted: Wed June 13, 2007 11:57 AM UTC
My friend and I (two girls) are planning on staying one night in Montevideo on 25th June. Does anyone have any recommendations re: safe, (reasonably nice) cheap accomodation in the capital? We'd prefer to be somewhere near the main attractions. Anything up to £10/night each.
P.S. Any with websites/email addresses would be particularly helpful! :-)
