Lima Safe hostels in Lima...
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 10:55 PM UTC
Hello all. I will be travelling to Lima in about two weeks and I am looking for a safe but relatively cheap hostel or hotel. I would prefer a double (as I will be travelling with the fiance) with a private bath anywhere in the price range of $25 to 40 a night. I have been searching online and reading Lonely Planet but from previous travelling I have found that the best suggestions come from other travellers.

I will only be staying in Lima for 2 or 3 nights and then catching a flight to Puerto Maldonado so any suggestions for places to stay in Puerto Maldonado would also be appreciated!

For past trips I have spent hours researching online for best places to stay, sights, etc. but unfortunately I will not have the time to do that for this trip. Thanks!

Lima Lima to Trujillo
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 07:02 AM UTC
Going to be playing some tennis in Trujillo and was curious what the best/cheapest way to get there was.

We will be starting our trip in Rio. Should we buy roundtrip tickets from Rio to Lima?
Should we fly Lima to Trujillo or drive?
Should we buy tickets before coming to South America or buy them in the country?
Thank you for your time.

Lima safety in Lima and Peru in general
Posted: Fri April 25, 2008 08:41 PM UTC
My 19 year old son has asked to travel to Lima to visit a friend he met during his first year in college. Having lived in Venezuela during the late 70's and again in the late 90's, I wonder how it compares? Is Peru "american" friendly and safe? Is kidnapping prevelent? Should I be concerned for his safety, or is Peru (Lima) an okay place to visit for a 19 year old student without parental supervision?

Posted: Tue April 22, 2008 09:01 PM UTC
In Lima now 04/22/2008 and still having trouble with getting around and finding things to do.

My local Peruvian friend is unable to play tour guide because of work demands so I am not sure where to head out to and explore. SO if anyone is living here or visiting the same time I am here for the next 10 days and you want to team up and explore please let me know.

Lima WANTED: Spanish language immersion school and conversation buddy too
Posted: Tue April 8, 2008 02:33 PM UTC
Good day,

My ability to speak and write in Spanish is at an intermediate level.

Since I will be in Lima June 8- July 8, I want to use this opportunity to attend a Spanish language immersion school in Lima and become fluent once and for all!

Any suggestions regarding which language school I should go to will be greatly appreciated.

I would also enjoy meeting up with locals in Lima who are bilingual (English/ Spanish) to practice speaking Castellano.

Thanks so much for your help, Soulanjuli

Lima Solo travel in Peru
Posted: Wed April 2, 2008 11:46 PM UTC
Hi!

I am going to be in Lima for almost 4 months starting in May. I'll be volunteering with a local organization working with street children. I was wondering how safe it would be for me (a small, 19 year blond girl) to do normal everyday things ie: riding the bus, shopping etc. alone. Also, if there are any safe ways to travel around Peru by myself, or if I should wait until I find other tourists? Keep in mind I have a student/volunteer budget. Any suggestions would be awesome!
Thanks

Lima Bus to Tacna or should we fly?
Posted: Sun March 30, 2008 11:56 PM UTC
Hola

We will be in Lima from 2 - 5 April and wish to travel to Tacna on the way to Arica.

Purchasing locally appears to be the cheapest and it appears that a return flight to Tacna purchased in Lima might be as cheap as $160 USD.

A luxury bus appears to be approximately $70 return locally.

What is the best way to travel? If by bus, which is the best bus line?

Any suggestions about luggage security on a bus?

Gracias, Amigos

Lima Casa Andina Private Collection - Miraflores
Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 09:24 PM UTC
Does anyone have info on the new Casa Andina Private Collection in Miraflores? Is it recommended? Good location? Good service?

I'm trying to decide between Casa Andina Private Collection - Miraflores or Doubletree El Pardo. Casa Andina is less expensive. So, if they're equal quality, I'd like to choose Casa Andina.

Thanks for your feedback!!

Lima Best Area in Lima to stay...
Posted: Fri March 7, 2008 06:14 PM UTC
I am travelling to Peru for vacations and will be starting in Lima for 3 or 4 nights. Then i plan to move to the most interesting places in the country (cusco, machu picchu, etc...)
What do you think is the best area to stay in town...? A well located, safe and good location to plan my trip around the country... (maybe with some good local travel agencies, a good hotel and if possible close to nightlife)

I've had some people recommending Miraflores, is this the best location in town?

I appreciate your help. Thanks!

Lima Best Lima location for Singles
Posted: Fri March 7, 2008 05:31 PM UTC
Hi There!

I am going to Lima in June for vacations with some friends.
What is the best area in town to stay, regarding the fact that we are singles looking for nightlife and beautiful girls... :)
We do not want to stay in a very dangerous area but we don't mind staying in a less safe one if it is better for partying and meeting nice girls...

Thank you for your help.

For hotels in Miraflores, which would you recommend - the Casa Andina Classic Centro or Sonesta Posada Del Inca?

Is anyone familiar with these? Which one is nicer? Better location? Your feedback is welcome.

Thanks!

Lima Lima to Arica, Chile?
Posted: Tue March 4, 2008 10:56 PM UTC
Hi

After visiting Lima for several days, we are travelling to Arica, Chile and renting a car. We would appreciate advice on the best way to travel Lima to Arica. We understand there are good buses to the border town (Tacna).

Which bus companies are the best? Is it better to ride on the top deck or the bottom?

Should we reserve ahead or purchase once in Peru?

Lima Lima - studying, volunteering, weekend trips, and Machu Pichu
Posted: Thu February 14, 2008 10:31 AM UTC
Hi all,
due to arrive in Lima end of March and start Spanish Lessons start of April. Lessons will only be two hours, 5 morning a week, so will be looking for lots to keep me busy, for about 2 months.
Any suggestions for weekends away? would be able to leave friday midday and return sunday evening.
What to do during the week? Volunteering or teaching english opportunities?
End of May am off to Machu Picchu with 3 others, one of whom has had an ankle operation so probably cant do the entire inca trail. Is it worth doing the one night version of the hike, and does this require being part of a tour? or is it better just catch the train all the way to aguas, do the hour hike/bus ride, and get a guide only for the site?
Thanks :)

Lima Poverty-Security
Posted: Mon January 21, 2008 11:24 PM UTC
Just returned from a three weeks trip to Peru. I was blown away by the poverty in that country. I saw people with one shoe, people with no shoes, dozens of kids roaming the streets in Cusco, hundreds of people (Cusco) lining up at Christmas in front of a church for a piece of sweet bread and a cup of hot chocolate. The Disneyland-like tourism of Machu Picchu is in stark contrast to this, they milk tourists like cash cows, you have to pay to use the bathroom...

The summer nights in Peru were a lot colder than expected.

Be aware of possible security problems! E.g. I used the HOSTAL ROMA in the very center of Lima, Jiron Ica 326, where the hostal staff stole money from me. (I am a hundred percent certain of this!). So be careful and prepared to face some surprises. Still there a great people in Peru there but the poverty drives some of them to extrem measures.... Has anybody had similiar experiences?

Lima Hostel booking on-line
Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 12:21 AM UTC
Hi
I've recently booked a couple of nights accommodation through hostels.com
Everything seems OK and they have hostels in most of the places I intend to visit.
My question is.
Does anyone have experience with this company and is it reasonable value (looks like they charge US$2 per booking).
Just trying to protect my cash I suppose.
Thanks

Lima Airport to Miraflores
Posted: Sat January 19, 2008 12:13 AM UTC
This might be a daft question, then again I've been called worse.
Can anyone tell me the best method of getting from the airport to Miraflores and the approximate cost.
I've heard stories about inflated taxi fares. Then again I've experienced these in India, Vietnam, Thailand and London.
Your help and advice is most welcome and appreciated.

Hello,

My friend and I are getting into Lima at about 11pm and have a flight to Cuzco at about 6am. We wanted to leave our luggage at the airport and meet up with some other friends before our morning flight.

Do you know if there is luggage storage at the airport? Will it be open that late and open in the morning to pick up our luggage?

Thanks for any info,
