Where to Stay to Tour Machu Picchu Posted: Sun October 25, 2009 08:17 PM UTC
Contemplating flying into Lima from Rio and staying for a day or two then going to visit Machu Picchu. Question is, where is a good place to stay near there? Should we stay at Cusco, Aguas Calientes or somewhere in between.
I gather you catch the bus to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. Correct?

Are these organized trips worth it? Posted: Tue September 1, 2009 11:24 PM UTC
I saw ads for trips "Machupicchu by car" http://www.machupicchubycar.com/machupicchubycbus/machupicchubycar2d.html and I'm wondering if they are worth it. The time at MP seems little and they also take the train at some point. Anyone used them?

Trip feasibility Posted: Tue August 25, 2009 06:49 AM UTC
I'll be in the US for Christmas and I'm looking into a possible side trip down to MP. I've read that the weather around that time (late Dec.-early Jan.) would be rainy but does anyone know how exactly rainy it's been in recent years? Does 'rainy' mean continuous downpour for hours or days?...light showers or torrents?...or is it more of sporadic rains with dry spells in between? I guess what I'm trying to ask is would it still be OK to travel there at that time of year, or should I just skip it for a better time?
And should it be a 'go', are hotel rates, transportation fees, and other related expenses any different considering that it'll be the low season?
Thanks for any replies.

How physically demanding is Machu Picchu? Posted: Tue August 11, 2009 10:14 PM UTC
I'll be taking the train from Cuzco since I have some mobility difficulties and am not fit enough to do the Inca trail. However I was wondering whether the actual site is very physically demanding and whether I'll manage on my own.
Besides, would a day be enough for Machu Picchu? I'll be working in Cuzco during the week and would have only weekends off.

Tour Agents for Inca Trail - Maccu Picchu 4D3N Posted: Thu August 6, 2009 01:24 AM UTC
Hi there,
I think many have probably post up enquiries about tour agents in Cusco to get some reviews and feedback. I am planning to do my 4d3n hiking tour at the end of November. I have been doing some research myself and have come up with a few listed ones which so far have good reviews but I seriously want to listen from the travellers themselves who have done the hiking trails.
Thus are the list
1) Apus Peru - http://www.apus-peru.com/classic_inca_trail.html
2) Llama Path - http://www.llamapath.com/
3) Inca Trail Reservations - http://www.incatrailreservations.com/inca_trail.html
4) All Treks - http://www.alltrekcusco.com/inkatrail4day.htm
5) Pachamama - http://www.pmexplorers.com/index/index.php?id=15
6) Indiana Expeditions - http://www.indiana-expedition.com/infinctrail.htm
Kindly comment only if you have done with any of the above agents or if you have any agents which you strongly recommend, please do so.
Thanks all.
Cheers

What route and how would you recommend there ? What route would you recommend in my back from Machu Piccu. Generally I have not got too much time. Maybe it is worth to go via plane from Santiago to any local airport near Machu Picchu ?

giving passport no. in perurail online reservation ? Posted: Tue April 21, 2009 04:44 AM UTC
Hi,
Has anybody made train reservations via perurail.com and did not provide passport number ? is this truly a requirement, ie, will they not give me the ticket when i get there if there is no passport number in my reservation ? I am kinda hesitant to put in my passport number (and 2 other friends') ...
any ideas ? or is it pretty safe ? i know it's not like it's my SSN or credit card number, but it's just that i don't put in info if it's not absolutely necessary ..
Thanks

Huayna Picchu Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 11:18 PM UTC
I am doing the Inca Trail and will be arriving to MP on May 25th but I might not be able to climb Huayna Picchu. So I decided to spend the extra night at Aguas Calientes so I can climb HP. My only problem is that I already bought my airfare ticket back to Lima on the 26th at 15:45 and not sure if I will be able to get back to Cuzco on time to catch my plane. Also, do trains leave on time from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo?
Could somebody help me?

Water, Food, and Altitude... oh my! Posted: Thu March 26, 2009 01:31 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
I've been trying to read up on the situation with food and water. My boyfriend and I will not be staying at a 5 star, all inclusive hotel so I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to what foods to eat, foods to avoid? Also, I've heard that if you buy bottled water you are pretty much good to go, but do you think it's worth it for me to bring a water purifier? I'd assume you can't use tap water to brush your teeth or anything like that either.
We are not going to be in Peru for long at all, so I want to do all that I do to avoid getting sick. We'll be flying from Lima to Cuzco and then almost immediately down to Augas Caliente. We'll be staying there for 3 nights and visiting the surrounding area and of course Machu Picchu. Everyone seems to say that Cuzco is the place to worry about altitude sickness. The most time we will spend there is a half a day until we catch a flight back to Lima and then back to the States. Any advice about altitude sickness in this short amount of time or the best way to avoid it?? Thanks!!

Im told that there is about 7 hours of hiking per day. Is that including lunch stops? about how long is that? Just trying to get a better feel for what I will be in for. "Reasonably fit" im sure means different things to different people.

Machu Picchu Posted: Wed March 4, 2009 01:02 AM UTC
My girlfriend and I are going to Machu Picchu in three weeks, flying to from Denver to Lima then Cusco. Our plan is to stay in Cusco for one day; any suggestions for lodging, food, things to do? We're going to be in the area 5 days during the last week of March.
I'd like to know if it's possible to hike without a guide from Aqua Calientes to Machu Picchu as well as Huayna Picchu and Picachu (last one is a joke)? What are the logistics involved: entrance fee , reservation, and other fees?

Machu Picchu for a par of senior cissies Posted: Sat January 24, 2009 06:13 PM UTC
Hi. Going to Machu Picchu for a day on the Hiram Bingham Express. We will be there third week in Feb. and it seems we must expect rain. We are both over 65 and moderately fit for our age I suppose. We thought we would walk to Iti Punka for a view. So questions are... will this be possible weather permitting, and how bad is the rain we can expect. Thanks folks

Machu Picchu tour companies - any advice? Posted: Wed January 7, 2009 12:15 AM UTC
Hi
We're looking to hike the Inca Trail in April. Trying to decide on a tour company. We've looked at: Llama Path, All Trek, Indiana Expeditions. They seem to offer good prices and a tour that fits our schedule.
Has anyone used these groups? Or suggest another?
We have 9 days total. We want to hike up and train down.
One more question: how long does it usually take to acclimatize to the elevation?
Any advice or tips would be great!
Thanks!

Do You Have to Pre-Book a Machu Pichu Trip? Posted: Tue December 30, 2008 07:25 PM UTC
Some friends and I are headed to Peru in a few weeks (mid-January) and want to hike to Machu Pichu via the Salkantay Trail. Various people have said we should have booked a guided trip months ago (i.e. 3-8 months in advance), but others have suggested we just roll into a hostel when we get to Peru and book a trip there.
Just curious if anyone has had any luck booking MP trips while in Peru or if we should have scheduled something long ago... Noting that with the rainy season there will be less tourists and I also hear there is less demand for the Salkantay Trail.
Thanks!

How is the weather in machu picchu in march? Posted: Tue December 9, 2008 10:49 PM UTC
Hi!
I am going to Peru in march, and I will also visit Machu Picchu. I am not panning to go the incha trail, I will just take the train/buss up there. I just wonder if anybody knows what kind of clothes I should bring? Is it cold? How long time do I need there? Is it enough with a daytrip, and then take the buss/train back to Cusco? Or do I need to spend the night?
Thanks!

Machu Picchu in February - what to bring? Posted: Sun October 12, 2008 05:29 AM UTC
We will be in peru in February ... Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Cusco, and also Puno (Lake Titicaca) amd Lima for a few days before and after. I'm trying to figure out how to pack for the various climate conditions ... generally I am a carry-on-bag person - have traveled for weeks in Europe with just a small bag, but I am not sure how to handle it for this trip.
We're not hiking the actual trail, but I am imagining MC will be a bit muddy and possibly slippery, so I have already figured to bring along just light hiking boots (Keen Targhee), but not sure about clothing. I think maybe layers? Thermals?
Any ideas or suggestions will be welcome!
