Khett Siem Reab Take the Lake or Bus
Posted: Sun January 11, 2009 04:45 PM UTC
Hello everyone,

We are in Sien Reap on 4th of Apri, 2009 we need to get down to Phnom Penh. I have been trying to find out whether it would be better to go by boat or bus. I have read some pretty bad write ups on the boat trip. People stating the boats over sell their tickets and the trip being tedious with very little to see, boat or bus. I would be grateful for advice before making a decision.
Also accommodation in both Sien REap and Phnom Penh. I would like a place with a little swimming pool if possible and reasonable. Thanks in anticipation.

I have read somewhere that the lake is not accessable during Feb to May due to low water levels?

Can some one confirm the validity of this?

Phnom Penh Travel from Phnom penh to Siem Reap
Posted: Wed January 7, 2009 08:55 AM UTC
Hi,

I am hoping to fly into PP 3rd week of January with a view to heading for Siem Reap & Ankor Wat for a few days. I have a few questions re transport.

I was hoping to catch a reasonably quick bus there, perhaps directly from the airport. What are my best options in this regard. How much should I expect to pay and how long does the journey take. I'm looking at a reasonably early morning arrival into PP via Air Asia.

Is private mini-van or taxi hire viable economically/safety/speed wise, (there will be three of us so cost, while still an issue, is not necessarily the biggest concern).

Failing bus, the boat option looks interesting. Is it the case that you just go to the port and grab one or must the tickets be purchased from an agency in advance? How far from the airport to the dock and how often do these boats normally go on a daily basis?

I appreciate any help I can get on this.

regards,

Xb

Phnom Penh Long-term stay in Phnom Penh
Posted: Tue January 6, 2009 11:01 AM UTC
Hello, everyone, I would like to ask you about money matters staying in Phnom Penh for a longer time. I am doing my Masters in International Development and I specialize on SE Asia, particularly Cambodia. At the end of July I am coming to Phnome Penh to undertake a 4-month unpaid placement at one of many NGOs there. My question would be how much money do I need to have a descent (not posh) life in Phom Penh. Is 500-700 $ a resonable amount of money?
I have been to Phnom Penh before as a tourist, but I can't make any conclusions just spending there two days. How much is a regular room to rent in nowadays and how much would I need for other expenses (food, entertainment, etc.)?

Best regards,
Paulius

Cambodia Professional/safe firearms training in cambodia
Posted: Sat December 20, 2008 11:39 PM UTC
I know there is the seedy side, with popular stories about being able to buy guns more easily than batteries in Cambodia, or having the chance to blow up a cow with a rocket launcher for the right money, but I'm looking for none of that. I would like to learn how to use guns in a responsible way and completely out of self-defense.

So, does anybody know of any training camps/firearms ranges/etc. that don't fit into the usual notorious tourist haunts?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Cambodia Soooo disappointed with Sihouk Ville! Any advice?
Posted: Thu December 18, 2008 06:52 AM UTC
Been here a few days and feel like I've landed in the Costa Del Sol,this was so different to what I expected and I am sooo disappointed. It's full of the Brits abroad brigade and as expected lots of sad dirty middle aged/old men(well the latter I was expecting) Was told it was like Thailand 20 years ago but it's worse than Thailand now. Been to a few quietish beaches nearby but still wasn't quite what I was expecting and if you stay in these areas they are very expensive to rent a room.Does anybody know of anywhere to go that is nice and away from this area or is it all the same everywhere? Seriously don't know now whether just to just get to another country. Any suggestions? I prefer the beach but if not somewhere else that won't disappoint? Many thanks!

Angkor Wat Ho Chi Minh to Angkor Wat

I have about 2 weeks in SE Asia and want to see Vietnam and Cambodia but don't want to spread myself too thin. What's the fastest possible way from Ho Chi Minh to Angkor Wat? Do we have to take the bus from HCM to Phnom Penh AND THEN go to Angkor Wat or is there a direct route from HCM?

Posted: Sat December 13, 2008 08:40 AM UTC
Does anybody knows if I can get the bus tickets from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville in Mekong Express Seam Reap office? Next Dec 25 I will fly from Seam Reap to P.Penh and then I am planning to take a bus to Sihanoukville. I have read in some threads of the forum that the bus station is very crowded and that sometimes it is very difficult to get a seat.
Any idea if its possible to buy those tickets in advance in S.Reap?

I cannot seem to find any flights out of Siem Reap (I am leaving in the first week of February 2009). It seems Siem Reap airlines has suspended flights?

Should I travel to Phnom Penh first? How do I get there best from Siem Reap?

Cambodia Border crossing Snuol - Loc Ninh
Posted: Sun November 30, 2008 12:12 PM UTC
Is it possible for tourists to cross the cambodian-vietnamese border between Snuol (Trapaeng Sre) and Loc Ninh (Road number 74)? How to do it, transportation, experiences?
I am going to come from Laos and want to go to Saigon so I thought this would be the shortest way. After that I am planning to go to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap for Thailand.
Or would it be advisable to go to PP first and make a side-trip to Saigon?
Thanks for your responses.

Krong Preah Seihanu Place to stay in Sihanoukville for a family
Posted: Sat November 29, 2008 04:32 PM UTC
Hi,

I would like to find a good place to stay in Sianoukville for me, my husband 2 children 2 and 4 and my mother. We don't like the BIG hotels without any "feeling" so we don't want to stay in a huge hotel. Does anyone know were to stay if you want to have a pool, cleen and safe and fairly small. It's been 10 years since my last visited Cambodja so I don't really know what you have to pay for places like this at the time. Can anyone help us?

Thanks.

Phnom Penh Bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)
Posted: Sat November 29, 2008 02:29 PM UTC
My wife and I need to get from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh in mid-April of 2009. I think that taking the express bus might be a lot more interesting than flying (yet again). However, I am concerned about the reliability of the bus trip, as we need to get to Saigon to catch our return international flight. Anyone have any experience with this?
