Angkor Wat Angkor wat in June/July
Posted: Thu March 26, 2009 08:52 AM UTC
Is early July still good to visit Angkor Wat? I've read that it's the rainy season would it spoil the experience any problem with floods?
Would early June be a better bet?

Appreciate any inputs/advise on the timing.

Thanks.

Cambodia Advice on itinerary please
Posted: Mon March 23, 2009 02:43 AM UTC
Hi,

Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Siem Reap on Tuesday, stay there until Sunday and travel down to Sihanoukville until Friday and then go to Phnom Penh and fly from there back to Kuala Lumpur on the Sunday.

Therefore its 5 nights in Siem Reap
5 nights in Sihanoukville
2 nights Phnom Penh

Is it easy to travel from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville or am I better going to Phonom Penh first and then Sihanoukville, I fly from Phnom Penh late afternoon, how long would it take to get to the airport from Sihanoukville?

Any tips on hotels in all 3 places would be appreciated, also the must things to do and restaurants and bars to visit.

Many thanks

Posted: Wed March 18, 2009 06:58 PM UTC
Hi
I'm planning to fly into Bankgok and keep moving with a bus/train into Cambodia and Laos, maybe into Burma and Bangladesh:

I know some people entering Cambodi obtain visas at the airport of entry: but what if you enter with a bus or train?
What happens with the visa?

They will keep you out?
How can I apply?

Also do you know re the same visa issue entering Burma and Bangladesh?

Pls advice

Thnk you

Angkor Wat which hotel?
Posted: Sun March 15, 2009 02:26 PM UTC
hi guys,

we're going to siem reap in may.difficulty choosing hotel as confused by the large choice and conflicting reviews.our budget is about $100 per night.

pavillion d'orient has great reviews on trip advisor but can't find much info on it outside this website:

1.has anyone been there?recommended or not?

2.we're vegetarians and want a hotel where the manager/staff/chef would accomodate us.

3.is it fairly ok to get into the main eating areas in town by tuk tuk from this hotel?

any other recommendations welcome.

we were also considering tara angkor and victoria angkor resort and spa.

thanks in advance!

Cambodia Cambodia / Laos Visa Requirements
Posted: Sat March 14, 2009 02:01 PM UTC
Good day

Grateful if anyone could give advice regarding visas for Cambodia & Laos as some sources I have checked out seem to give conflicting views. Is it possible to get a visa for both countries upon entry?

I'm flying into Phnom Penh from Hong Kong & then into Luang Prabang from Siem Reap. One source says all you need are some passport photo's & you can get the visa issued upon arrival for about US$ 25-30. The other says its best to get visas, from the respective embassies in your country of origin, before you depart.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Khett Siem Reab Latest info on overland route from Siem Reap to Bangkok?
Posted: Wed March 11, 2009 05:09 PM UTC
I'm currently is Siem Reap and will be on my way to Bangkok in a few days. I'm told that the cost to hire a driver and car from SR to the Thai border (Poiphet) is $35 USD (for the entire car, not per person) and now only takes about 1.5-2 hours. Then after crossing the border take a 6 hour bus to Bangkok for $9 USD. Is this true? Has anybody travelled this overland route recently? How did you go about it?

Seat61 suggests the train from the border to BKK but I'm told here that the bus is recommended. This info is from my guesthouse and tomorrow I'm gonna shop around for prices but would like to know the latest info from anyone. I checked out the forums but most are rather old given the upgraded paved conditions of some roads here. I could pay about $12 USD for bus the whole way from SR-BKK but was told its about 12 hours total and rather grueling! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cambodia Rolous group of Temples @ Siem Riep
Posted: Fri February 27, 2009 03:05 AM UTC
I will be visiting Siem Riep & Angkor Wat nxt mth, I notice that there is another less well known temple complex 5KM East of Siem Riep (Rolous Group consist of Bakong, Phreah Ko, Loley temples) This group is older than Angkor Wat from my reading.

I was wondering whether this complex required the same day pass similar to Angkor Wat 1 day/ 2-4days passes of US$20 & $40 respectively...I'm thinking of doing only 1 day at Angkor Wat (Us$20 pass) & on the nxt day to Rolous group which I hope to be FREE!!

Angkor Wat Siem Reap to Vientiane
Posted: Mon February 23, 2009 09:18 PM UTC
Hi there

I'm planning to travel to Cambodia in early May and am hoping to head for Laos after visiting Angkor. Unfortunately I am only in the region for two weeks and would like to get from Siem Reap to Vientiane as quickly as possible. Does anyone know if there are flights operating between the two destinations? The last I heard - Siem Reap Airways was grounded & they were the only airline operating out of Siem Reap. Is this the case or are there any other airlines flying directly to Vientiane?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :o)

Phnom Penh Pubs/Bars in Phnom Penh

I'm in Phnom Penh for a bit of business mid March and always like to go for a beer and meet the locals. I haven't been to Phnom Penh since 2000 and used to drink at Heart of Darkness and stay at the Walkabout.
Any new places opened since then?

Cambodia volunteering in Cambodia
Posted: Wed February 18, 2009 05:52 PM UTC
Hello, Hope someone can help.
I am a teacher who has been lucky enough to be given a career break from work to do volunteary work/travel for 4 months. I will be travelling through Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia and then on to OZ, New Zealand and Argentina.
I have looked for literally hours on the net and unfortunately have only found companies supposedly 'offering' volunatry trips but at ridiculous prices, sometimes over £2000! I cant understand why this is charged! I would be able to provide my own accommodation and travel. All I want to do is offer my skills in a school, orphanage, or anywhere that needs help. I can work for between 1 and 2 weeks. I hope to do this in most of the countries I go to.
Please could anyone help? Do you know of any charities that would like support? or need any help. My current school have offered to do some fund raising on my behalf (nearer my departure)....therefore I would also be bringing much needed funds.
Any advice or help would be great!
Thanks

Angkor Wat Angkor Wat in March
Posted: Tue February 17, 2009 05:39 AM UTC
I'm planning to bring my parents who are in their 60s to Angkor Wat in early March. Can anyone advise if it is a good time or is the weather condition too harsh for the 2 old folks? And also, may I know where is a good place to stay so that it will be easier for them to travel to the temples, as well as the best way to travel from temple to temple with minimal walking for them? Thanks in advance everyone!!!

Angkor Wat Angkor Wat Tour Guide? What do you recommend?
Posted: Fri February 6, 2009 05:02 AM UTC
I'll be traveling with my girlfriend to Siem Reap so I'd like to use someone trustworthy and knowledgeable of the area. I'm looking at angkortourguides.com because it was recommended in the other post, has anyone tried them?

Also, what is the heat like in mid-March? When does the rainy season start? Thanks for the guide recommendations.

Cambodia Week in cambodia with a four year old
Posted: Mon February 2, 2009 05:28 AM UTC
Hi there, we will be travelling for a week from HCM to cambodia and wondered if anyone had any tips on best places. We get the impression that PP is a bit seedy? Not worried for ourselves, but travel takes on a different perspective with little one on board. Wondering if its possible to get accross the mekong delta and go along the coast and avoid PP altogether? We are not so bothered re siem reap etc, as save that for next trip. Thanks for any help Trees

Cambodia Vientiane (Laos) to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh Overland
Posted: Tue January 27, 2009 05:47 PM UTC
Hi,
Just wondering does anyone have any info on getting from Vientiane in Laos to either Siem Reap or Phnom Penh in Cambodia by land and relatively quickly!!! Don't really have time to travel through southern Laos and don't want to fly if I can help it.

Is there any way of doing it in less than a day? If I could travel over night it would be perfect...any sleeper/VIP buses going between the two capitals? Thanks

1 Current costs of a visa on arrival and does it have to be paid in USD or can it be bought in Aussie Dollars or Malay Ringitts

2 In there a departure tax from Cambodia, If so, how much, and can it be paid for in other currencies than USD. As Australians it is now impossible for us to use USD.

Cambodia Travel conditions in Cambodia during August
Posted: Sun January 18, 2009 08:27 PM UTC
Hi,

Along with some friends we are planning to include an asian chapter to our travel itinerary. We are currently planning to cross into cambodia from thailand (Poipet border crossing) and head on to Siem Reap, then continuing our journey on to Vietnam (heading to HCMC).

As this is during the wet season, is it problematic to visit during this time? Could we still enjoy visiting the Angkor and is travel compromised at all during this period?

Many thanks,

Chris
