Packing for Amalfi/Capri/Pompeii Posted: Sun August 30, 2009 11:53 PM UTC
We will be staying in Sorrento for several days in mid September. We will be taking day trips to Capri, Pompeii and along the Amalfi Coast. We would like some advice as to what clothes we should pack. Are shorts okay? For men? For women? By "shorts", I mean long ones, to the knee. We are middle-aged, but very trim. What about sandels? I'm sure there will be throngs of tourists. But we would rather look like Italian tourists in-the-know than clueless tourists. All suggestions will be appreciated. Grazie!

Amalfi vs Priano- updated question Posted: Sat December 27, 2008 01:28 AM UTC
Well through all our investigating we are still a bit unsure about which locati0on might be best. We are no thinking that Amalfi might offer us an easier transfer to Paestum via the water then Priano?? Any last thought before we book our hotel. Is it possible to take a ferry from Amalfi to Paestum or pasitiano?? Also, would Amalfi be a better location to see the rest of the area?? Lastly, any hotel recomendations? Thanks again

Where to base yourself Posted: Tue December 2, 2008 11:37 PM UTC
We are plannig on a trip to the Sorrento and Amalfi cost this May. We are unsure where to base ourselves to explore the area. We will have about 4 days and were thinking Sorrento bt now are wondering if Amafli or Praiano??? Any hotel recomendations would also be greatly appreciated. Lastly, would you drive the cost either in a car or Vespa or take a bus?? I drove in Tuscany last year and loved the Vespa experience.
Thanks for the help

Amalfi or Positano? Posted: Wed June 11, 2008 07:39 PM UTC
My husband and I will be spending 4 nights in the Amalfi coast the beginning of September to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We are very torn between staying in Positano or staying in Amalfi. Does anyone have any preference? We heard there is more to do in Amalfi (or at the very least more options as far as the restaurants and bars). Is that true? We also heard Amalfi is the mroe laid back of the two and probably the less expensive of the two. As for hotels, in Amalfi, the Hotel Luna Convento has been recommended. And in Positano, the Hotel Eden Roc has been recommended. Has anyone stayed or heard about either of these hotels?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Aussie travelling to Italy in Oct 08 Posted: Fri June 6, 2008 07:33 AM UTC
Hi all,
Just like to welcome myself to the forum:)
I'm on my first overseas trip in October for 6 weeks, and the Amalfi Coast and Italy has drawn my attention.
Besides the normal scenic tours, what else can people recommend? Eg. I'm a bit of a keen salsa dancer, so if certain towns have a great salsa culture I'd love to know:) I'd also like to do a few tours where I get to be active, for example a bike tour or mountain hike.
Thanks!
Max

Amalfi coast on a bad ankle Posted: Sun March 30, 2008 12:59 AM UTC
My wife and I have doing a long-planned trip to Italy, including a week in the Amalfi area in June. Unfortunately, she has recently suffered a bad ankle fracture and significant ligament damage. She will only be out of a cast 4 weeks, and prognosis is for a long rehab.
Originally, our plans had been to do some town-to-town trekking, but that's now out. Currently, we have a B&B in Positano, seemingly about "midway" up the hill, but I'm concerned just how difficult it will be to get around Positano, or any other Amalfi town. The tour books all emphasize the hills and steps of Amalfi.
Has anyone had experience as a less than fully abled (but fit) person in Amalfi.
Thanks
John

leaving amalfi to rome Posted: Wed November 28, 2007 05:25 PM UTC
how late can you leave amalfi to get to rome by public transportation
1) i was told you need to get to naples (either by bus or ferry)
2) then from naples you take the eurostar to rome
does anyone know how late the eurostar runs out of naples- 830 pm? and how early we should leave amalfi to safely catch that train

arriving to amalfi by ferry Posted: Wed November 28, 2007 05:20 PM UTC
We are flying into Naples June 8 2008 and would like to possibly arrive in amalfi by ferry-
1) we were advised to take the bus from the airport to the train station
2) possibly take a taxi for approx 15-20 euros from the train to the harbor
Does anyone know if this is the best way to arrive at hotel la bussola on amalfi which is near the harbor?
What is the ferry schedule liek that time of year? if we miss one ferry, how long do you have to wait for the next one? which company is best and do you get good views?

Driving from Amalfi to Sicily on the west coast? Posted: Thu October 4, 2007 07:08 PM UTC
I appreciate any advice. How long will it take? Are there any good places that are must sees? Or should I take the Autostrade directly to Sicily? Or should I just concentrate on the coast road and skip Sicily? I have 7 days for the round trip.
Thanks,
Dan

Where to stay along Amalfi Coast Posted: Tue August 21, 2007 09:40 PM UTC
My husband, teenage daughter and I are planning a one week trip to the Amalfi coast the last week of October. We have been to Italy many times, but never south of Rome! We mostly love to shop, eat, drink wine and just enjoy the "life" in Italy. We are also interested in the art and architecture. Which town is the best to stay in? With a teenager I'd love to find a 2 bedroom suite or apartment for $500 or less per night. Is that possible? Any recommendations?
Thank you!

Buongiorno -
I have been checking hotels on the Amalfi Coast and came across this one which looks almost too good for the price that is listed for rooms. Does anyone have any experience with this hotel??
I'd appreciate any information you can give me.

Attire for men on Amalfi Coast Posted: Mon June 11, 2007 05:24 AM UTC
We're leaving soon with three other couples for two weeks on the Amalfi Coast. When we've travelled in Europe before my husband has always worn shorts for sight-seeing during the day and long pants at night in restaurants. The other men are thinking about the appropriateness of wearing dress-type shorts at dinner. From my experience, Italian men don't usually wear shorts, but we are tourists after all. Are there any Italian men out there who can give us some advice? Grazie!

Hotel Aurora or Hotel La Bussola in Amalfi Posted: Mon October 30, 2006 02:02 AM UTC
I will be arriving in Amalfi in July by Sita Bus from Salerno and would like a hotel within walking distance of the bus stop, as I will be taking an number of bus trips to local towns, Sorrento etc. The above hotels seem to fit this criteria - can anyone comment. I would prefer a hotel with balconies or terrace and definitely a sea view.

Day trips on Amalfi coast Posted: Fri September 1, 2006 11:37 AM UTC
Can you get a hop-on/hop-off ticket for a trip along the Amalfi coast? I'll be staying in Sorrento, and would like to visit a few of the town, eg. Positano and Ravello. What would be the best way to do this? Also, if you go on the boat trip do you get the opportunity to stop in these towns along the way?
Can you see two towns properly in one day?
Thanks
