I was in Venice last week (Jan 2012) and my partner and myself went for a day-trip to Murano and Burano islands. Whilst on Burano we became aware of the most unusual (to our ears anyway) whistle or siren sound that appeared to be coming from the main clock tower with SOME degree of regularity - this really did sound bizarre, a very electronic seris of whistles and bleeps that we convinced ourselves couldn't possibly be just the marking of the hour or 1/4 hr etc?
It may however have been something to mark the regular arrival or departure of the ferry services but we are still none the wiser Can anybody illuminate me further as to the origin or purpose of this strange signal? Does anyone have a sound recording of it!? Sounded long, loud and particularly eeire on a old, clear mid-winters day in January Many thanks |

Over ten years ago, my friends and I stayed in a small hotel on the Island of Burano. I remember little about it except that it was not obvious at all (the entry door was down an alley or corridor), that it had more than one floor, and that it was not very far from where the boat from St. Mark's Square docked. Has anyone stayed on Burano? Is there still a small hotel there?
Thanks so much. |

We are going to Venice in Oct. 2003 and plan to take a one day visit to Burano. Can anyone tell me interesting things to do in only ONE DAY. Thanks for your help.
