Only 2 weeks before our trip! According to the route planner, we need to take a metro to Piazzale Popoli and get a train to Saxa Rubra and a Cotral bus from there to get to Calcata. If we go on a Wednesday, are the trains from Rome (ferrovia roma nord) to Saxa Rubra fairly frequent? Bottom line, when should we leave from the Rome Termini metro station to Piazzale Popoli/Ferrovia Nord station to Saxa Rubra to catch the 920am bus?

I speak of Calcata (not Calcutta), a tiny town just 30 miles of Rome. The town was mentioned in the latest National Geographic Traveller Magazine, and it has peaked my wee photographer's interest considerably. I've already accessed their own website, and I have really good info on how to get to it from Rome. However, if we (my mother and I on vacation) were already in the Tuscany region, and wanted to make a stop for the day in Calcata before heading down into Rome, is this possible? I'm looking at road maps and trying to figure out if there was an easy access to the town coming from the NORTH--does anyone have any good ideas? Oh, and here's the kicker--we aren't renting a car--we are taking the bus from Siena to Pienza, and then we WERE going to head over to Chiusi to catch a train to Rome, and then this article came out and now it's caused an uproar in my head. Maybe I should just take that train to Rome and daytrip it from there? Suggestions?
