Ushuaia is it possible to buy a lighted globe in Ushuaia ?
Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 08:21 AM UTC
I am talking about a home-size globe (maybe 30 cm diameter) with a small lamp inside so the continents are shining through.
I might need it for a few photos, but dont want to bring mine in the flight-luggage.

Ushuaia Ushuaia to Torres del Paine
Posted: Mon July 21, 2008 05:00 AM UTC
We plan to fly into Ushuaia ( from El Calafate ), and then go into Chile ( presumably through Punta Arenas ), see Torres del Paine, and then fly to Santiago.

The general question is how should we do it?

The particular questions are:
1) Is it easy to rent a car in Argentina and drop it off in Chile?
2) What is the best way to get from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas? Car/ferry? Bus/ferry? Fly? ( not interested in cruise ship )
3) Where is a reasonable place to stay while visiting Torres del Paine? Puerto Natales?
4) Where do we catch a flight from southern Chile into Santiago? The best we can find requires going back south to Punta Arenas.
5) Or should we scrap the plan above and take the different route of El Calafate to Torres del Paine, back to El Calafate, then down to Usuaia?

Also, any general advice on the whole plan would appreciated.
Thanks

Ushuaia Booking Activities in Ushuaia
Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 06:18 PM UTC
Hi there...I'm heading to Ushuaia in January 2009 and wanted to find out if anyone has some info on whether activities/day trips should be booked in advance, or can be done easily when we arrive? Since we're headed there in peak season, do things such as beagle channel cruises, walks on the martial glacier, or day trips to the national park ever sell out or are difficult to arrange? Is anyone aware of whether these activities are very costly? Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide!

Ushuaia Do stores sell performance clothing or should I buy elsewhere?
Posted: Mon January 28, 2008 01:45 PM UTC
My husband and I are planning to go to Ushuaia and hopefully get on a ship for Antarctica mid February. We are now in Brazil for Carnival and only brought summer clothes with us. Are there clothing stores that sell clothes by the North Face, Pagagonia, etc. in Ushuaia or do I need to buy here if Rio? Are they expensive down there?

Thanks!

Ushuaia Renting parkas for Antarctic Cruise
Posted: Mon October 22, 2007 12:48 PM UTC
Hi,

Is it possible to rent a parka jacket in Ushuaia? We need them for our Antarctic cruise but we as we're travelling in South America for a year it makes more sense to rent them. Can anyone recommend somewhere to rent them in Ushuaia and give me an indication of the rental price for 11 days?

Thanks,

Ushuaia Last minute trips to Antarctica (ship) - anybody knows of possibilities ?
Posted: Wed September 19, 2007 03:54 AM UTC
(I've already asked this in the Antarctica forum, but hope to reach more VTers through the Ushuaia one).

Hi VTers,

on behalf of a user in "my other forum", I am asking this.

Does anybody know if there are any "last minute" bookings possible for ship trips from Ushuaia into Antarctica ?
This, for low seasons, of course.
It would make sense, as the companies might like to get their boats full.

I'd appreciate your help - just post here, I'll give him the link to this forum.

thanks in advance

Ushuaia Ushuaia to Puerto Williams

Hi,

Does anybody know if there's a scheduled ferry service between Ushuaia and Puerto Williams in Tierra del Fuego? My Rough Guide book says there was none at the time of research but that there plans to start one in the future - just wondering if it's started yet.

Many thanks,

Ushuaia Ushuaia in June?
Posted: Sun February 25, 2007 12:40 AM UTC
Does anyone know how Ushuaia is in June? Is it unbearably cold (I'd like to do some camping), and would I see any wildlife (aka, sea lions, penguins, etc)?
I know that El Catalen will be closed after April until September/October - I only hope it won't be like that for the other glaciers.

Also, I'm not an expert hiker or very athletically fit but I can do crazy hikes if I find myself on one, just don't ask me to repeat it or go dancing the night of - from what I've read of the hiking trails in Torres del Paine, they seem a bit extreme - from your experience, is it possible to do day hikes for about two to three days and still get a good experience?

Thanks! I look forward to reading your advice!

Ushuaia weather and clothes
Posted: Thu February 15, 2007 02:41 AM UTC

We are flying from BA to Ushuaia on February 28,2007. We plan
to be in Ushuaia for 3 nights, 2 nights each in Puerto arenas and
puerto Natales and 2 nighta in El Calafate. We are in the process
of making reservations at B & B.
Our question is (1) what will the weather be (2) what kind of
clothes and shoes should we bring.
We are around 60, are not campers or into trekking. However,
we like walks and natural sight seeing without climbing hills.
Please recommend sightseeing and self or other tours.
Thanks.

Also, has anyone ever rented a car and DRIVEN from El Calafate to Ushuaia? Can you even do that with the terrain?

Thanks!

Ushuaia April - too cold for Patagonia
Posted: Mon November 13, 2006 02:59 AM UTC
Hi - We're planning a trip to Argentina for 3 weeks in April. We were planning to head down to Ushuaia on 18 April for a week... Will it be too cold then for trekking? Some sites also hint that a lot of things close up for winter? Alternatively we could go to El Calafate (still very far south), the Lakes district or head to the Andes from Mendoza... Any tips gratefully received! Thanks, Lotte
