Me end my wife are hoping to go to Catania in the near future and would like to travel by train from catania to Naples or Rome. Can someone tip me regarding prices and time schedule pls.

Hi! I'll be taking a cruise and one of the stops in is Catania. There are organized outings with the cruise line but i was hoping my boyfriend and i could tour on our own. I was just wondering if it's going to be difficult for us to navigate around-pretty much having no idea where we're going when we step off the boat. Just curious if anyone has any tips or advice!

Was just wondering whether there is an IKEA outlet in Sicily.

Can anyone help me with any shops in Catania who have nice usefull wedding souvenirs... A website or some pictures will be very helpfull so I can take an idea where to go as I am coming for a day trip.

I am planning to visit Sicily for 5 days in late March 2008. Please would you kindly advise the following:

1. Is Catania the best place to stay if we are spending a day in Mount Etna, say, overnight stay in Catania?

2. Assuming that Catania is our 'base', what trains or buses are available to catch to go up to Mount Etna (I read this on some websites before)?

3. What 'destination' should we be aiming for for a day-trip to the Mount Etna?

4. How much does it cost? Transportation? Entry fee to the National Park?

My mom's grandparents all emigrated to the US less than 100 years ago, so we still have some family members in Sicily whom we have contacted off and on over the years. However, it's been a while since the last time letters were sent, and most communication was through my aunt--I have never written to these people before, but I do have their addresses and I do know how we're related.

When I go to Catania later this month, I would really like to visit them and see the towns where my family came from. But I don't want to just show up on their doorstep uninvited; what is the polite way to contact these distant relatives and introduce myself? Should I send a letter in advance of my trip and then make a phone call once I'm in Sicily? Does this sort of thing happen very often, and would it be weird of me to want to visit?

And what sort of gifts would be nice to bring them from the US? I was thinking of making a family photo album...My professor told me it's polite to bring flowers or a cake when visiting an Italian home, so at least I know that part already :P Grazie mille.

to a person with experience of spending holiday in Catania - in june period is it more cost effective to book a holiday pack (min.£240/person) or try and get a cheap flight and get a lodging upon arrival (not necessarily a hotel), im talking 1 week break. please please reply as i dont know what to do and need to make up my mind!

I consider that big beaches are going to be crouded, so it can be a small hotel near a small calm beach.

I have been looking for places to stay in Taormina, possibly cheap ones with shower in room.

I am looking for some kind of bed and breakfast for a comfortable stay with my family. Anybody with some positive experience that could share the place and if it's possible its website or phone number would be very greeted! We are a family of 5 persons (me, my spouse and 3 children), so we are looking for a big room or a mini-apartment it's ok as well.

I have been to the B&B San Placido Inn in Catania ( www.sanplacidoinn.com ) but I would like to look for something near to Taormina, to better enjoy the sea in summer. By the way I recommend the latter if you wish to stay in Catania, I found a very friendly enviroment there!
