Looking to be an English teacher/tutor in Fortaleza Posted: Mon August 31, 2009 11:48 PM UTC
I'm planning to move to the Fortaleza area to establish some business ventures and marry my Brazilian fiancée. But as a backup plan, I'd like to teach English privately. I would like to find a private school in need of a literate, native English speaker. My fiancée and I have even been talking about starting an English school (she is an English teacher, too).
I test better than the 99th percentile in competency, and have experience tutoring English to speakers of many languages. I'm doing well at learning Portuguese and became quite popular on livemocha.com for my detailed explanation of English difficulties - in Portuguese. Although I've not obtained an ESL certification, I would certainly do so if really necessary.
Any advice on where to look?
Thank you so much!

In town January 16 through January 27 Posted: Mon January 5, 2009 05:05 AM UTC
This will be my first time in Fortaleza. I have a few friends living in Brazil, but none in Fortaleza. I'll be looking at real estate primarially, but I plan to get out and about to some of the clubs while I'm there. If anyone, especially folks with local knowledge, wants to meet up for a drink, I'd be all over it.
On an unrelated note, are there any dive (scuba) operators in Fortaleza who allow spearfishing on their charters? Kind of obscure question, I know.

Nightlife of the city Posted: Mon May 19, 2008 02:02 PM UTC
I’m visiting this great city in June 08 (less than three weeks away), can you someone please shed some light in all the happenings in the city especially the nightlife. I am also hoping to get some well earned rest, can one suggest a nice place within the city where one can relax without experiencing any hassles.
My stay is 10 days and I am hoping not to experience any dull moment.
Many thanks

Going alone to Fortaleza Posted: Wed March 12, 2008 09:17 PM UTC
I am a Norwegian guy travelling alone to Fortaleza this march. Are there any of you Virtual Tourist members that will be in Fortaleza during march? I would be lovely to meet up with some of you who actuelly live in this brilliant part of Brazil that I have been reading about for weeks and weeks.
I work as a management consultant in Norway and have a very hectic everyday life. I very much look forward to visiting Brasil, recharding my batteries, getting some sun on my back, and basically having a great time!

hostels in Fortalezza Posted: Fri May 25, 2007 04:41 PM UTC
I'm thinking of visiting fortalezza for a week. I'm having trouble finding reviews on hostels in the area. I don't really know hostels that well, I've only rented apartments. But I think a week is too short for that.
It sounds like a good plan would be to stay at a hotel the first day, probably in Meireless and look for hostels around there the first day. Does anyone know what the going rate is for hostels there? Is it possible to get a private room that I can lock my stuff in (I have a laptop)? I don't know how secure hostels usually are...

Who's in Fortaleza in May??? Posted: Wed April 18, 2007 10:49 PM UTC
Hey everyone! I'm going to Fortaleza this May for about 3 weeks. I'm actualy planning to move here in the very near future. This is my third time in Fortaleza in only 6 months! My love is kitesurfing, so it's not surpising that Fortaleza is my choice of future residence, however since May is the "off" season for kitesurfing and all my surfing buddies are away to work I am travelling alone this time.
If there is anyone traveling alone who wants to get together give me a shout! Or if you feel like hanging out with a party animal from Norway! :o)
My Portuguese is improving and I get by, but my goal is to learn this demanding language perfectly before moving.
Hope to meet some samba lovers down there!!

Wonderful Porto Das Dunas Posted: Tue April 3, 2007 10:35 AM UTC
Hi,
Two years ago I bought a wonderful house at Porto Das Dunas, just outside Fortaleza and 500 metres from The Beach Park and wonderful beaches. We usually rent out the house, but in July we'll be there with children and grand-children. If you have ideas about beautiful places we ought to visit, food we should try etc., please, tell me.
I would also like to meet Brazilian people from the area who speaks English.
Best regards,
Solfrid from NOrway

Just curious... Posted: Wed March 28, 2007 03:33 AM UTC
Prostitution is a big and serious thing in Fortaleza. And many of the clients are men from abroad. I am sure not all of you come here for that particular reason, so I was wondering, do you feel like you have that image attached to you when you arrive in Fortaleza, that you might only be here for that?!

relocating to fortaleza end of March Posted: Mon March 5, 2007 05:20 AM UTC
Hello Fortaleza!
I am moving there at the end of March. I don't know a single soul there, and it's probably going to be pretty lonely when I first arrive. Is anyone up for meeting me once I have arrived. I will be staying at the Backpackers Ceara hostel for a time when I first land. My plan is to find work in two fields. One is teaching English, and the other is doing therapeutic bodywork. Then I'll find an apartment once I'm working and know where I want to live.
Any suggestions or support are more than welcome at this stage. I have been practicing my Portuguese with Pimsleur for a year now, and recently started with Rosetta Stone. I think I'll be able to get by, but barely. I'm quite thrilled and also nervous about it all.
Hope to meet you.
Kind Regards,
Craig Mollins

Thinking of buying in Cumbuco Posted: Sun February 25, 2007 09:06 PM UTC
Hi folks, myself and my good lady are contemplating buying a small place in Cumbuco later on this year and we were very interested to find Mike and Vanessa's input together with the replies from those in the know. We would be grateful for any help and advice we could get. I am a keen surfer and am now learning kiteboarding which is how I got to hear about Cumbuco, I also like golf so my first question is whether or not the Golf Course is under construction? I spoke to a guy called Dick Dawson the other day who runs Dream Properties selling a development in Cumbuco, he lives not far from you Mike and Vanessa on the Isle of Wight. He was telling me that there is a lot of talk about the course being built but no action as yet and that this is typical of many other promises of expansion up this coast by way of golf courses, so it would be great to know if the course is actually being built now! Next up was really just to say that I would grateful for any info on real estate, growth predictions, possible rental yields for a two bed apartment, eating out prices, beer prices (very important), in fact anything. Our e mail is kenandlucy@talktalk.net, look forward to hearing from you and good luck Mike and Vanessa with your venture. Ken

Accommodation / Camping along the coast North of Fortaleza Posted: Tue December 26, 2006 01:14 PM UTC
Hi!
I decided to fly to Fortaleza tomorrow and spend some days together with my girlfriend enyojing the beach, waves and the arm weather.
We plan to get a rental car and make our way along the coast north from Fortaleza towards Jeri, but probably not going to Jeri itself, since I expect to find places less crowded.
Can anybody recommend spending the nights in a tent at the beach? Is it save enough?
Any recommendations for simple, cheap but save and clean places to stay close to the beach?
Any recommendations for car rental in Fortaleza? I guess I just need a simple economy car, no 4wd.
Has anyone been to Paracuru for Windusurfing? Are there other windsurfing rental places along the coast?
Thank you so much, since this quite a quick planned trip :)

Record stores in Fortaleza Posted: Fri November 10, 2006 12:09 PM UTC
Hi, I'd like to know about record stores in Fortaleza. I'm mainly interested in metal music and collect vinyls and cds. Info on all kinds of "underground" record shops (that specialize on the more hard to find reords, south american metal vinyls and such), second hand record shops are greatly appreciated. Naturally I'm interested on the larger stores, that carry different kinds of music, too, but my main interest is the small independent record stores and second hand stores. Thank you in advance!

Portuguese accent in Fortaleza? Posted: Sun October 22, 2006 06:05 AM UTC
I have been studying Portuguese with Pimsleur, which I think is Rio de Janeiro based Brazilian Portuguese. In one of me earlier posts canaleiro mentioned that the Portuguese in Fortaleza is different. I am just wondering how different it is? Are all my months of Portuguese practice with Pimsleur for not?
Any thoughts are appreciated,
Craig

Good area to rent in, and cost of renting Posted: Sat October 14, 2006 05:14 PM UTC
Hello again,
Would anyone be able to tell me a good area to rent in? I would like something low end, but not a dump. Safe, clean, and affordable. A bachelor would be ideal for just getting started in the city.
I don't know where the English schools are, so it's impossible to exactly identify where I should live to be near work, so I'm just wondering about a decent area that is more or less central, etc.
Also I am wondering what I should expect to pay for an apartment. Just a range would be helpful. Am I looking at say between 500 and 800 dollars, or between 200 and 400 for example?
Another question is the kind of lease generally required in Fortaleza. And also since I won't have a work visa, does that create any obstacles?
Any help will be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Craig (my real name)

Do you really need 4X4 to get to Jericoacoara? Posted: Tue October 3, 2006 02:37 PM UTC
I'm planning to drive up from Fortaleza along the coast to Jericoacoara, passing by Cumbuco, Paracuru & other nice places on the way...
Do I really need at 4x4, or will a normal rental car do if I drive only during daylight, and not at local speeds ;-)
Thanks
