| Rio de Janeiro | Clothing in Rio Posted: Fri January 25, 2008 02:49 AM UTC
I've heard some people say that buying your clothes in Rio is a good bet since you'd be seen as a local and not a vulnerable tourist. Would it be wise to that?
Also, if you're wearing nice footwear, is there a chance I could be targeted? I mean, something like Converse or Nike? I imagine the locals have those. Thanks! |

| Rio de Janeiro | but hiking boots in Rio Posted: Thu January 24, 2008 02:02 PM UTC
Hi
Would you pick up a good pair of hiking boots over in brazil/south America. Was hoping to pick them up in Rio as this is where I land. Thought they might be cheaper. Or would be just better buying them at home in Ireland. Tks. |

I was curious. I wanted to take a permanent reminder of my upcoming trip to Brazil home with me, a tattoo. Now I have a question. I'll be based in Botafogo neighborhood during my stay. Is there any nearby tattoo parlors and the important thing.......ARE RIO TATTOO PARLORS STERILE AND CLEAN?! I don't want to come back with hepatits or something just a tattoo. Are they safe and where could I go? Thanks!

| Rio de Janeiro | Getting a Vaccination in Rio Posted: Fri January 18, 2008 02:16 PM UTC
Folks, Can I get a Vaccination in Rio, for Rabies. It would be the 3rd dose I need. I could stay at home and get the 3rd but would like to fly out sooner, as my friends are going sooner. What do you think?
You are supposed to get the doses on day 0(just got today), day 7 and day 28. Now the thing is I will miss the day 28 dose. Can I get that in Rio? Or How close can I get that to day 7, like say on day 17(as opposed to 28)? I am think of playing it safe and stying and gettting the 3rd on day 28. But I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and could maybe advise. thanks |

| Rio de Janeiro | Transportation to the Quilt Store in Niteroi... Posted: Thu January 17, 2008 04:30 AM UTC
Now that I know where the quilt store is located in Niteroi...thank you Gary....can someone advise me about how to get there. I will take the ferry across from the Centro region. I'll take a taxi from the hotel in Ipanema.
Once I am in Niteroi...I need to find Av Quintino Bocaiuva 325 / Shopping Lido Center. Would I be best to take a taxi? If so, should I have a price agreement before I get in the taxi....and...what would you consider to be a fair price.... Lots of questions...and I deeply appreciate all the help that I have received!! We do have a tour guide, but he told me that he wouldn't take me there. Thank you so much again!!! I hope this isn't a repeat...sorry if it is! |

| Rio de Janeiro | Quilt / Fabric store in Nitorei Posted: Wed January 16, 2008 02:25 AM UTC
Hello,
I am visiting Brazil in March for a few days before I go on a cruise. A woman told me that there is a quilt store in Nitorei. She went to it in 2004. She doesn't remember its name nor its address. I was wondering if anyone would know about it. It would sell cottons for quilting. It could be part of a bigger store selling fabrics for clothes, upholstry, etc. Would anyone know enough Portuguese for me to try to Google it?? I would really like to find this store. I thank you in advance for any help, Joyce from Ottawa, Canada |

| Rio de Janeiro | Cab ride fare to the Contemporary Art Museum? Posted: Tue January 15, 2008 12:59 AM UTC
I'm wondering how much it costs for a taxi from Avenida Atlantico, Rio's seaside from Copacabana to Contemporary Art Museum in Niteroi. Also what is the number of the public mini bus that transports from Rio to Niteroi and the closest stop to the museum.
Thanks in advance for any reply. Cheers, Nicky |

| Rio de Janeiro | Sightseeing in Rio Posted: Mon January 14, 2008 01:09 PM UTC
I will be in Rio in Late Feb for a weekend.
I want to go see Sugar loaf and the christ statue but don't want to join a tour as I want to go early to beat the crowds and the heat. I was thinking of hiring a taxi to get me there and also have him wait for me. Will that be expensive? The tours seem to be about $100 so surely it can't be as expensive as that? Also, I'm a bit worried about safety, I keep reading all these horror stories of muggings etc. I'm staying in Leblon and have no intention of walking the streets at night, any hints, tips or warnings you wish to share?? |

Is the shore line something to see from the water all lite up at night or a view of the city above looking down? Been looking for night tours or city light tours and so far they all include dinner or dancing. Does anybody have a suggestion for just seeing the city all lit up?

| Rio de Janeiro | Weather in Rio (in Early March)? Posted: Thu January 10, 2008 12:42 AM UTC
Hello - traveling to Rio for the first time the first week of March of 2008. Wondering what to expect weather wise (Day & Evening) so we know what to pack. Will it be too hot for jeans at night? My husband & I will be staying in Ipanema and will probably hit some more upscale restaurants & lounges at least a few times... was wondering what to wear? Also if I wear True Religion jeans will they be a target for theft? That would be pretty bad having to disrobe in public... Please help!

| Rio de Janeiro | Travelers Checks and Rio Posted: Tue January 8, 2008 01:48 AM UTC
I have a question about taking travelers checks. I was thinking of doing this. Is there easy access to a bereau de exchange in the airport? Once I get to the hostel, would they be able to exchange American money to the Real?
Also, could I go to any bank and ask? Thanks! |

| Rio de Janeiro | where to store a suitcase for 10-12 hours Posted: Mon January 7, 2008 07:01 PM UTC
I will arrive by cruise in Rio on a sunday morning, at 07.00am and the ship offers a tour to Corcovado starting at 8.00am and dropping me and my luggage at the airport at noon, while my flight is leaving at 09.00pm.
So that does not really make sense to me. Is it possible to check in my luggage at the airport already in the morning and take a taxi then for sightseeing with just my handluggage ? (I am flying with TAP) Or are there at least lockers for the luggage at the airport ? how much would a taxi be from the cruise-port to the airport ? --- In case that I take the shipstour to Corcovado that ends at the airport, I will have at least 4-5 hours for sightseeing in the afternoon, WHAT is possible to do within that time, when I have to start at the airport ? Sugar Loaf/ Pao de Azucar would be fine Ipanema and Coppacabana just for some pics and a bit of sand in my shoes ? What else is possible within 4-5 hours |

Hey,
I am gonna be in rio for one week in february. Havent decided if gonna do it independent or join a 1 week tour. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on whether there is a particularly good hostel to stay in as a lone traveller(i.e.one that runs day tours etc. and is lively socially). Alternatively does anyone know any companies that run good, reasonably priced 1 week tours in rio? All advice appreciated Toch |

| Rio de Janeiro | Pricing for Rio sightseeing places Posted: Fri January 4, 2008 03:16 AM UTC
Hello, we're trying to get an idea of costs for the typical sightseeing places in Rio.
So far, we want to see the Christ Redeemer statue, and Sugar Loaf Mountain. Can someone tell me how much it costs to take the cable car/tram to see these monuments? Cost can be in US$ or in Reals. Also, we have a guide for the day...we're not particularily keen on museums or churches.....could someone suggest other sightseeing places for us. Again, if there is an entrance fee...and if you know how much it is....that would be really useful for our planning. We would like to try to set up our own itinerary to help our Guide show us the city. Thank you so much. |

| Rio de Janeiro | Backpacking/Camping Posted: Thu January 3, 2008 12:52 AM UTC
Hello, I am arriving in Rio de Janeiro at the end of January for a three month tour of surfing and relaxing. It's my second trip to Rio, i am really considering the outdoors and the beaches in Santa Catirinha for camping outside on the beaches. I want to avoid too many hostels, to save money for other things. It's just a general question to see if anyone knows much about this. I'm not really concerned about campsites specifically I want to know more about dangers and or convenience of areas in southern Brazil anyone might know of.. Thank you very much Ryan

| Rio de Janeiro | During or After? Safely parading? (for a girl alone) Posted: Sun December 23, 2007 03:46 AM UTC
There is this once-in-my-lifetime journey I decided to go: Rio De Janeiro, Iguasu, Asunsion, Mondevideo, Buenos Aires, 15 days, me alone as a member of a tourist group.
I was also thinking, if I'll be in Rio during the carnaval, instead of getting squashed in the sambodrome crowds who'll be watching the parade, why not be in the parade. I can not be sure that anyone else of my group will have the same idea, so I assume that I'll be alone between strangers. I'm sure that it'll be fun anyway but would you consider it safe? I can not make up my mind if I should rather be in Rio during or just after Carnaval. I mean I would really like to SEE Rio, go for some sightseeing etc. But, since I don't expect to do this trip again, shouldn't I have the experience of the carnaval also? (I'm not the party-animal kind of person, and I am not that young anymore, but I like having fun like everybody.) What do you reckon? |

| Rio de Janeiro | Credit Card Question Posted: Wed December 12, 2007 11:22 PM UTC
49 days til Rio! I'm psyched!
I was reading in one of the topics here to use a credit card as much as possible and that's best not to carry much cash or any at all. My question is, are credit cards accepted at attractions like Pao de Acucar, Corcovado, and other places that need admission? |
