New Delhi Hotel??
Posted: Fri May 16, 2008 12:09 PM UTC
Hi

I am planning on being in Delhi for a couple of days, seeing the Old City, the national museum, etc...I will be returning after 2 weeks and was hoping to leave some luggage and return to teh same hotel..

Can anyone reccommend a hotel that is pretty centrally located for the things I'll be doing, fairly budget but not basic, and obviosly has a luggage storage facility?

Thanks!

India India during the monsoon
Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 04:48 PM UTC
Hi everyone,

I'm spending this August on the west coast of India - flying into Mumbai and then travelling south by rail, with an extended stop-off in Goa.

Obviously, I'm travelling in monsoon season - which could pose a few problems. I wondered whether anyone could offer any advice - just how bad are the rains? How many hours a day does it not rain? Is the sea safe to swim in? Are there any particular places I should avoid because of the monsoon, or any places I should definitely see because of it (I've heard Kerala is pretty impressive in monsoon season)?

Thanks!

Munnar self catered villa/ houses in Munnar in June 08
Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 08:16 AM UTC
Has anyone from VT experienced villas/ guest houses rented out on a self catering arrangement in Munnar?

I am willing to pay upto £200/ week and have plans to go as a big family initially with my parents and wife, but for the weekend more family members(6) will join us.

Am I being unrealistic in expecting something for £200/ week to accomodate upto 10 people for 2 days (would be okay to share rooms and floor), but mainly 4 members for the rest of the stay.

Also, I am expecting monsoon rains in June...is it too bad, that I should reconsider?

Thank you

Delhi OPTICIAN
Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 08:39 PM UTC
I will be in and around Delhi from July to October this year and I would dearly like to buy myself a couple of pairs of spectacles. Does anybody have any suggestions? If so how long ought I to allow for their construction?
That's the important part of my visit! However, if anybody has any accommodation suggestions ( my tastes run to spartan, central-ish and clean) then I would be very pleased to listen.
I am a soon-to-retire teacher from Cambridge, UK.
Many thanks,

Bangalore Self drive MPV hire in Bangalore
Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 11:54 PM UTC
My brother who lives in Bangalore, and I, are planning to meet up in Kerela, and then drive back to Bangalore.

Schedule is Bangalore-Cochin-Ooty-Bandipur-Mysore-Bangalore. We are looking to hire a MPV (Innova/Sumo) for 10-12 days on a self drive option. I have looked at the majors (Avis/Hertz/Europcar) but find their cost too prohibitive.

Can you tell me if it is possible, and maybe pass on some contacts. My brother is a new banglorite and wouldn't have the contacts.

Thank you for reading this post, and much appreciate any help you can provide.

India taking a laptop to india
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 10:51 AM UTC
i am hoping to visit india soem time in the next few years as part of a round the world trip i was wondering could i safely leave my laptop in delhi in somewhere like a guesthouse while i go travelling round rajesthan and pick it up on my return. my main reason for briinging it will be for internet access record information and store photos. i`m wondering should i bring it or should i just carry a big pad or paper to write notes use a large memory card for storing photos and use internet cafes when i need internet access.

i dont mean to accuse all indians of being bad but my main concern is i have heard and read that some can be known to trick tourists and try to make fools out of them ie scans overcharging and i dont want my computer going missing neither do i want to carry it round everywhere

any advice appreciated

State of Kerala Where can I find ayurvedic healing?
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 12:55 PM UTC
I want to do a 30 day cleansing/healing course of treatment of ayurveda.

The ideal situation would be one where there's a certain level of comfort but I don't want to pay too much. If I can get away with it, I'd like something that includes treatment, lodging and food for 1000 or fewer rupees per day.

Websites and phone numbers greatly appreciated.

India Ashrams in India. How can I find the best location?
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 02:31 PM UTC
I was browsing the net today trying to find out more information about staying in an Ashram in India. There seems to be so many different options and yet very few locations really caught my attention. I checked out www.indiashram.com which gave some extra details about finding an Ashram and general guidance in what to look expect while living in India. It was definitely helpful in giving an overall picture of living in an ashram, but I still would like to know how I should prepare myself for an extended stay in India. Any suggestions?

Goa Accommodation (again!)
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 02:00 PM UTC
HI,

Again - does anyone know of some accommodation from 28th December - 25th January. I know it is the most expensive time, but I think the places I went to are trying to rip me off. Last december - I went looking at accommodation and was told for the time of year I was going, and because of the length of time I am going, would be (after the 6th January) 800 rupees a night. Just come back from goa, and they want to charge me double for the whole 28 nights!
I found this is most of the places I went.

So can help me with a place to stay in calangute (not near the market, but within the area).

Thanks

Hyderabad Living in Hyderabad?
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 01:35 PM UTC
Hi to all Globetrotters out there!

We might get posted this summer to either Mumbai or Hyderabad. My first thought was "Wow!", but what do I really know in order to make a decision for the next 3-4 years? I did some research on Mumbai, but the internet only gets you so far. We're in Ottawa, so no, I cannot hop on a plane to check it for myself. What I have heard, read, etc. fascinates me extremely! However, we're looking at starting a family, i. e. have a baby while we're over there and the extreme pollution in the major cities scares me. We've been posted to Damascus in the past, which was certainly not a candidate for any environmental awards, but tolerable for 2 years. Can anyone enlighten me a bit? How is the climate in/ around Hyderabad? Is it dry, is it humid (I'm pretty good with heat). Is it a major earthquake area? What about crime? Are there some ex-pats? Bigger hotels, good restaurants, English movie theatres? How about getting about? For any international flights out, where would one fly (which airlines are operating?)? How easy/ advisable are trips by car into the surrounding area? How about catching anything, if one is reasonably careful. Mind you: We're really not the paranoid cliche of North-Americans that spray everything with Lysol, who end up attracting all kinds of things anyways.
I'd be so grateful, if someone out there could find the time to answer some of my questions. If there's anything you'd like add, please feel free. It will be greatly appreciated!

Safe & happy travelling to all out there!

India Cellular Phone
Posted: Wed April 30, 2008 02:58 AM UTC
Hi,

I will be traveling in India for about six weeks, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to stay connected with my family during that time. I just need to be able to text/email/call them once a day or so to tell them about my whereabouts and to say that I'm OK (they tend to worry). I was wondering ... is it possible to get some sort of a cellular phone that would work in most of the country? Would I have to buy a different SIM card in every town I visit? How does that work? How much could I expect to pay? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks!
