Hi everyone, my Hubbie and I will be in Naples on 17th Sept 08 we will be spending 3 nights in Sorrento, going to Pompeii, Positano, Ravello etc, we will then plan a drive from Naples to Rome along the coast road. Past Gaeta & Terracina etc.

My question what is there to see along the coast road, is this the best route to take, or are we better on the inland roads? Is there more to see inland?

And can you advise where to stay on the coast rd if this is the route we take.

I shall cruise to Naples late this May and would like to visit both Pompeii and Sorrento during the port call. May I take a train from cruise port to Pompeii and then continue the train to Sorennto for a visit before taking the hydrofoil back to cruise port. Can I make it within 10 hours? Should I? Please give me suggestion and/or comment. Thanks.

What is the name of the port near the Excelsior as I plan a boat trip to Procida and it seems to leave from various locations.Many thanks-Gene

I read today a bunch of reviews of the hotel and area from another travel site and out of 50 or so that I read three people posted that they had been held up at knifepoint right in front of the hotel. This really sounds nuts to me. Is this a bad area and is something like this possible right in front of the hotel??

So, why is Naples for the "faint-hearted"? If I did go to see the sights in Naples, what is worth seeing? Someone mentioned a few churches and the museum, but is there any kind of street or plaza that is worth seeing?

Ok, so, driving is out of the question. Thank you so very much for the advice. I know I won't be sorry as I sit comfortably in the train watching all the traffic snarled up along the roads! So, my final question. Are you all already laughing? Would it be worth doing a couple of hours in Pompeii (I'm pretty sure that is about the amount of tolerance I can handle- ADHD!) going on train to Sorrento and then back to Naples or should I simply head back to Naples to see the sights there after Pompeii? Oh yeah, I am from Vancouver, Canada, and the drving here is pretty civilized. I have driven in places such as LA, so I figured it wouldn't be that difficult. I will heed your warnings everyone. Sorry. One last question (somehow I doubt that!) If I skip Sorrento and head back to Naples, what is there that might of interest to see and do? Shops? Plazas? Cafes? Best Pizza place?

Me again. Thank you all for your answers to my questions. It would seem everyone is in agreement. Could you answer these questions then. Why not rent a car? I could drive to Pompeii and get there by 10:00, do a couple of hours (from what some of you have said 2 hours is enough and I am not one to look in nooks and crannies), leave Pompeii at 12:00ish, head to Sorrento (or would there be a similarly charming town / village to see near by?)and get there by 01:00. Hang out for an hour or so, leave at 2:00ish (or when the train leaves) and be back in time? The ship actually departs at 18:00, so if we are back by 16:30, that should leave lots of time for any kind of delay. Or maybe I am fooling myself!

I am thinking that I would like to go to Pompeii for sure, but it sounds like Sorrento is worth a visit. Is it possible to do by train. We will be getting a train from Naples at about 10:00 and will need to be back in Naples at 16:30. If we do Pompeii for 2-3 hours, will we still have time to get to Sorrento, spend a couple of hours there and then head back to Naples? Would I do this all by train? or should I rent a car and do it on my own?

We will be cruising into Naples in the summer. I have a few questions I would like answered and if someone could help it would be great.
1. Is Naples safe? If not, where should I avoid?
2. Is it easy to get to the train station from the cruise ship to travel to Pompeii? How do I get there? If I take a taxi, about how much will it cost?
3. I have read that the other site, Hercu... is worth seeing. What is the difference, and is it worth stopping on the way back from Pompeii?
4. Pizza originated in Naples. Where would I get the best, most authentic pizza? How would I get there.
5. Is there a plaza or town center in Naples where there are shops and cafes etc to visit that is a must see?
6. Any other suggestions... quaint towns, villages outside of Naples?

I've read all your opinions on Naples and I think I'm a little scared and confused about the pickpockets and thieves you mentioned. I will go with an elderly family and will stay in Hotel Garibaldi near Statione Centrale (8 nights and then 7 nights in Sorrento). We are quiet people, we mind our business, we just want to travel and see as much as posible (by the way, thanks to your tips, guys, I've planned an excelent holiday). But so far are plans, I'm thinking to much of the danger. Should I relax?

Hi, we are arriving in Naples by ship and have 9 hours free to tour. My husband would prefer that we just visit Pompeii but I would like to see some of the Amalfi Coast (Amalfi, Positano). People in this Forum speak highly of Pompeii but not much is mentioned of an Amalfi Coast trip. I'm hoping you seasoned travellers out there may be able to tell me if its possible to do both in a day (comfortably that is) or should we decide to do one or the other, maybe Pompeii as its our first visit to Naples and hubby doesn't want to spend the whole day travelling?

My husband and I are thrilled to have just booked our first trip to Naples! Yay us!! This will be our second trip to Italy from the US. Last year we spent a week in an apartment in Rome. We really loved pretending to be real Romans, so this year we've decided to pretend being real Neopolitans. We're staying in a tiny B&B in the historic area near Piazza Dante. I think I've read every post in the Naples forum and every tip in the Tips section. So much great info from everyone! Only two-ish questions:

1. Anyone know of some good hang-outs for local rock/punk/metal type music? Any must-see local shows coming up 25/06 - 29/07?

2. Where (and when) could we find a flea market? antique stores?

salerno.which one is not nessasary cheaper,but which is the better way.

2. If I want to go to Pompeii, should I take the ship's tour or is there a better way to do it. I hate getting stuck on a tour that takes all day. I understand there is a train that goes to Pompeii. Is it near the cruise terminal? How much to get to the train station?
3. What other attractions are there in Naples? Any must see places, must eat pizza places, must see cafes?

Does the 15 Euro include taking the vehicle with me. I really don't need it on the island (vespa), but I've rented it for 10 days and not sure what to do with it for 3 days while on Ischia.

How much does it cost to take the hydrofoil to Ischia, in addition the cost of a vehicle.

I would also like to drive to the towns where people do not pay taxes and do laundry in the streams. I've seen this and been there, I don't remember which direction I took.

I am not sure that this is the right place to post but my husband,parents and I are taking a med cruise in September with carnival. We are considering private tours versus the ship tours. Has anyone toured with drive amalfi.com or there is another and totally different company drive-amafil.com. Help, I am afraid that I have waited too late, we leave September 7th on the cruise that stops in Naples,Dubrovnik, Venice, Cannes, Barcelona, Messina and Livorno. Any and all help appreicated!! We would like to travel from Naples to Paestum in May. We cant find ticket prices on trenitalia for the local trains that run from Naples to Salerno/Paestum. Does anyone know roughly how much a ticket costs one way for the local trains (coded R Regionale on the train type). I assume they are all second class type tickets.

Hi. I am wanting to travel from Rome to Naples on the 18th June 2008. I have checked the Bahn German rail timetable and those for other train companies and for some reason I can only find trains that run up to the 14th June???? Can someone please reassure me that there would be a train going from Rome to Naples on these dates? Surely there is one? Why can't I get any timetable information? Any help would be appreciated. i just dont know what im doing wrong. Thank you

How do we choose a reputable cab company at the airport in Naples Italy? We are going to be carrying each one bag and don't want to take the shuttle to the center of town. We are staying at the Hotel Nuovo Rebeccino for one night before getting a car service to the Amalfi Coast.
