Beijing transportation IC card Posted: Mon January 15, 2007 01:29 AM UTC
I bought a Beijing transportation IC card as I heard that I could take buses and subway lines at cheaper fares with this card. However, I am not aware of exact discount ratio. It seems that it differs from the routes. Can anyone tell me about the fare rule of Beijing public transportation system in case of using IC card?

My China Itinerary! Posted: Sat January 13, 2007 04:10 AM UTC
I am arriving in Beijing March 2. I will stay 4 nights, then take a LONG train to Kunming and stay 3 nights, then take another LONG train to Guilin and stay 2 nights, then take a train to Hong Kong (transfer in Shenzehn?) for 2 night stay. QUESTION: Can I get by with less than $100 US a day in each of these towns (hotels are already paid for)? I'm fairly certain I won't need lots of RMB on the long-distance trains, but I'm in China for photography, not massive shopping. I also take cheap transport everywhere (buses or subway, sometimes taxi's if I really really need to be somewhere). Suggestions?

Beijing Olympics: National Stadium and Aquatics Centre Posted: Mon January 8, 2007 01:11 AM UTC
I plan to be in Beijing about March 1, 2007. I wish to visit the National Stadium and the Aquatics Centre to be used in the 2008 Olympics. I know that they are within walking distance of each other in the northern part of Beijing, on the south end of what the map calls 'Olympic Green'. On the map, it looks like they could be reached from the airport, but perhaps the road is incomplete.
Am I correct?
If I start from downtown, what subway station is closest to this site? What is the approximate cost of a taxi from the subway to these two sites?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Nightlife in Beijing Posted: Thu January 4, 2007 07:37 PM UTC
I'm visiting Beijing in March and from what I have read it seems the HouHai lake area offers the most attractive atmospheric nightlife. Somewhere I read there is a lot of 'Western rave techno music' around HouHai lake, is this true? I actually quite like techno and wondered if anyone could suggest anywhere good? Do bars stay open late?

Beijing to Chengde Posted: Tue January 2, 2007 11:04 PM UTC
I have heard that there are three ways to travel from Beijing to Chengde.
1. By train
2. By bus
3. By Iveco
Does anyone know the preferred form of transportion to get there? I have heard that Iveco is good. Has anyone taken that method? Where do they leave from in Beijing? Thanks for the help.

supermarkets in Daxing Posted: Thu December 28, 2006 11:15 PM UTC
I am coming to Beijing in March, to work for 4 months at the Peking University Software School. It is located on Jinyuan Road in Daxing. I am familiar with the inner city of Beijing, but have never been to Daxing or anywhere in the southern suburbs. Is anyone familiar with the area? Are there supermarkets nearby that sell international food? Restaurants? Anything else of interest?

Has anyone else out there been hit by the Beijing Tea Scam- students pretending to want to practice English and taking you to various tea houses where the merchants then charge approx. $500 to your credit card for a round of tea? Any advice on dealing with your credit card company in the aftermath?

Beijing -> Shanghai in Februrary Posted: Tue December 12, 2006 09:00 PM UTC
I will be traveling from Beijing to Shanghai by train in february. Will it be very difficult to get hard seat or soft seat-tickets because of the chinese new year? How long in advance do I have to order the tickets? I will be landing in Beijing on feb 2 and plan on going to Shanghai on feb 7. Is it too late to buy the tickets when I land in Beijing on the 2'nd? Thanks.

Late April Early May travel? Posted: Tue December 12, 2006 05:26 PM UTC
I am asking a bad question that is too general that has been asked too much. But....how is travel to China (Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xian, etc) late April to early May?
Also...how far along is the renovation of the Forbidden City? Last time I was there....it was covered with scaffolds. Like to see more without the distractions.
Thanks.

Touring China within 2 weeks! Posted: Wed December 6, 2006 06:40 PM UTC
Hi all! I have some questions about my itinerary for China in March 2007 (going solo!). Here it is (feel free to comment on the questions posed, or give opinions): 1. Arriving Beijing March 2 2007. Staying at the RJ Brown Hotel. Need to arrange a day trip to Simatai (hire a cab? Take a bus? How close does the bus take you?) 2. Need to arrange a 1/2 day trip to Badaling (cab? bus?) 3. Buy a train ticket to Kunming (can I buy my train ticket the day I arrive in Beijing and still get a soft sleeper seat?). 4. Staying at the Camellia Hotel in Kunming for 3 nights, want to arrange a visit to YuanYang rice terraces, and Stone Forest (hire a cab? Go by bus? Tour company?) Who can I call/email for more YuanYang info? 5. Train to Guilin, stay 2 nights. River Cruise & cave touring. 6. Head to Hong Kong for 2 nights. Fly home. BIG QUESTION: how hard is it to buy train tickets (soft sleeper) a couple of days prior to departing each of the towns i've mentioned?? I don't want to be stranded and not be able to leave! I found a reputable train schedule site but no mention of buying beforehand...ok thanks! it's a lot to go through! -SandiM
