Pingyao Posted: Sat August 20, 2011 10:25 AM UTC
I am planning a trip to China mid Oct. I worry I might have problem to get sleeper train ticket from Pingyao to Xian. I will take a train from Beijing to Datong. From Datong to Taiyuan, then Taiyuan to Pingyao. I could either take train from Taiyuan to Xian or Pingyao to Xian(better).

1)Can I buy the train ticket in Beijing or Datong Train Station in advance?
or
2)Can I buy train ticket in Taiyuan Train Station for the Pingyao-->Xian route?

We will be flying into Taiyuan in the late afternoon around 5pm and need to go to Pingyao Old City to get to our hotel. Is it easy enough to hire a taxi to go that distance from the airport or will be need to take the train? I'd rather not do the train in case all the afternoon trains are already booked by the time we get there. We are 2 older ladies and waiting around isn't a joyous option for us.

Hi All

Does anyone know what we can do/see in Beijing after the usual haunts?

I would be especially interested in old town areas that show older buildings, busy squares, flea markets and night markets

Thanks!

Catherine

Hi

Starting to plan my trip to Beijing in May. We'll be there 2 days and will use the first 3 days to go on organised bus tours to the city sights, great wall and old Beijing.

I was wondering where to head in the evenings - i like buzzing areas with lots of restaurants and bars, stalls and street vendors ....that sort of thing.

Anyone know any areas like that? From what I can see on the net theres Sanlitun, Wangfujing and HouHai (on a lake??)

Are these areas still the good places to be in the evening?

Thanks!

Catherine

We will have four days in Beijing later this year. We have made a booking at the Hotel G. It is located at A7 Worker's Stadium, Chaoyang District, Beijing. Could someone please tell me if this is near/close to the popular attractions of Beijing? Is it a good location to stay while in Beijing? Also, are there restaurants/markets etc in this district? I have no idea about the layout of Beijing. Many thanks.

Ok so a co-worker forwarded a nifty powerpoint show to me via email showing a most ancient but ethereal city built into the walls of a mountain. After some researching, I found the name Mt Mianshan or Cotton Mountain, located not too far from Taiyuan in Shanxi Province. So now, I did some more research but cannot come up with more info on this place (and nothin on VT, can you believe it?). How to get there? Are there accomodations in the wall-built city? The powerpoint show also showed a nifty waterfall area with a dinosaur at the top of the falls (??) and the most coolest steps through the gorge, driven into the sides of the gorge and you have to hang on to a chain link fence to go further. Have you been there?? How can I get more info on getting into it, staying there, exploring the waterfall gorge, and returning (alive, but happy!)? Thanks!

Hi,
I am going to visit some heritage sites in China.
One of them is Pingyao.

Is there an airport near this place, or how would you travel from Shanghai to Pingyao?

Also I am curious to find out for travel connections between Pingyao and Luoyang?

We'll be in Beijing in July for 5 days.
Did not have an opportunity to sample the Peking Duck.

In your opinion (I have an idea of 3 thus far but want personal opinions), which is/are the best restaurants for good Peking Duck meal?

Thanks!

We are spending a couple of days in Beijing in July before commencing a Tour.
On the Saturday we have hired a car and driver for the day.
We would like to get out of Beijing and into the countryside. Do not wish to visit the Great wall as we will be visiting this when our tour commences.
Most places I look at centre around visiting the wall
Would appreciate any suggestions.

Pingyao Posted: Fri January 15, 2010 09:18 AM UTC
Hi,

We are currently putting together our itinerary and organising our trip for April 2010. We would like to find out if anyone knows of a local guide/driver to go from Taiyuan to Pingyao. If so, how much roughly does it cost and is it possible to do a return trip from Taiyuan to Pingyao return in one day and have enough time to see the sights in Pingyao?

Thanks.

Wow! Nobody ever has heard of this city! But it looks very nice on a map of Shanxi, that I have recently seen.

Has anybody been to Changzhi yet?

I am probably going there in November

I wonder, whether I'll get any answers

Best regards

Pingyao Posted: Fri June 26, 2009 06:55 PM UTC
In September, we are arriving in Pingyao around 10am by train and leaving the next morning (late morning). I am a scenic photographer and want to take photographs from on top of the Wall of the Wall (among other things to photograph). Can you walk the whole way around? If so, how long would it take? Where are the entrances to get up if we are staying at the Yide Hotel (northwest area)? We want to try for early morning or around sundown to get some nice, 'romantic/fantasy/misty' shots of the wall (similar to the ones seen in National Geographic etc). Where are the best places to shoot photos if I want to avoid powerlines, modern homes, people, signposts, etc etc? It sounds silly but I try to photograph my scenery without a lot of 'realism' in it...thanks!

I am posting this question because when I visit the place for the first time, I don't want to rely on my sense of generosity. I hope locals of Beijing and VTers who have been to Beijing would be able to advice me on this one: How much is an average tip in Beijing for the following:

a) taxi driver for a ride
b) driver for an entire day
c) waiter/waitress
d) one who brings your luggage in the room
e) massage
f) pedicure/manicure

Thank you!

Is there a Website for Beijing's public transportation that you find very useful?

Do you think it is safe for a single female traveller to use taxi in Beijing?

Is there a week card that one can use for bus/metro/tram (if they have one, that is)?

I intend to stay in Beijing the entire 5 days. Hope you can give me some answers. Thank you.

Pingyao Posted: Sun March 29, 2009 09:30 PM UTC
In May I am planning to take the high speed (X19) train from Beijing to Xian. On the way back from Xian instead of doing the same, I am considering taking an overnight train to Pingyao and then the next night from Pingyao to Beijing.

Does anybody have experience with the Xian -> Pingyao and/or Pingyao->Beijing trains? Can you sleep in the compartments (soft sleeper) or is there too much noise from the train making so many stops.

Also, how hard is it to get tickets. I read somewhere that Pingyao is a small place and doesn't get a very large allotment of sleeper berths.

Thanks

Look for a hotel near local restaurants and main sights in Beijing.
The hotel should be located in center of restaurants and night life.
I do not want to pay more than 50.00 USD per night.I will be there 4 nights.
I have review a few hotels Days Inn and Qian Yuan international hotel.
Please advise.

a) How's the weather during this period of travel?
b) What's the better way to travel to Xi'an - by plane or train?
c) How many days to be in Xi'an / Beijing for a comprehensive visit?
d) Please recommend budget hotels in both cities.
e) Please recommend a reliable tour guide/agency in both cities.
Thank you

Heading to Beijing in February and the wife wants - a 1st Class Spa Hotel - I'm thinking Golf Hotel/Resort (in or near the city). Or - a few days in each - or if one place is great and has both . . .
This trip may well be paid for by, uh . . . someone other than us - so first class all the way if possible (too good to be true!).
I would really like to hear people's experiences and or recommendations please.
Thanks for any help!

I have been looking thru the CDC web sites, and it looks like to go just to Beijing for a couple of days, the Hepatitis A and B shots are about it, with maybe a booster for general shots.

I prefer not to introduce anything which is not indispensable. I plan to eat mostly cooked vegetables, rice, and tea (ok, I'm paranoid). Bring my Immodium, etc. etc.

Are these hepatitis shots really necessary?
