| Nanjing | Nanjing Massacre Memorial Reopening 13th December 2007 Posted: Sat December 8, 2007 03:54 AM UTC
As the subject line says, the Nanjing Massacre Memorial will be reopening on 13th December 2007, after being closed for renovations for more than a year.
Nanjing Massacre Memorial official English-language website: http://www.nj1937.org/english This date is the customary anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre, and 2007 will be the 70th year. I have been to this memorial at least twice before it was closed for renovation. I can only say that it is a place that any visitor to Nanjing should definitely visit. It is a place that holds a special significance for Nanjing's history and also for China's; and even more so for the tens of thousands who lost their innocent lives there. It stands as a reminder to never take peace for granted; peace that has been only been achieved after the deaths and suffering of an unthinkable amount of people. This is a memorial for those who died wanting peace, but who were unfortunately unable to enjoy it, unlike us today. A group of friends and I will be making a trip on Thu-Fri 13-14/12 from Shanghai. If anyone is interested in joining us, or is interested in going on a later date, please feel free to contact me for more information. Email directly at ellyse99@yahoo.com and put "VirtualTourist" and your own username in the subject line so that I know who you are, thanks. |

| Nanjing | Nanjing long distance buses Posted: Tue October 23, 2007 02:55 AM UTC
I'm baffled by the many long distance busses in Nanjing. It seems like you can go almost anywhere, but I never know where to start. So far, I know that to go South, go to the Zhonghuamen atation, and to go NE, go to the station near to the northern train station.
But I need to go to Jiangyin now. Anyone know the right station ? |

| Nanjing | Traditional accommodation in Nanjing Posted: Thu October 11, 2007 11:03 PM UTC
I'm looking for some characteristic traditional accommodation in Nanjing (and also Suzhou, Hangzhou, Huangshan and Shanghai for that matter) but whatever I try only modern concrete block hotels turn up in my search results.
Is it just bad luck or such places really don't exist? Thanks a lot in advance! |

| Suzhou | Shopping for Silk Posted: Sun August 12, 2007 12:06 PM UTC
We were considering making Suzhou a stop on our trip at the end of August. I am very interested in shoppoing for Silk and possibly having some dresses made. I have been told the government stroes are the best place(more expensive) to purchase silk and they have tailors there. I am also interested in seeing the museum and riding on the cana;l. What can you reccomend?
Our first stop is Beijing, from there we were thinking of coming to Suzhou, the Xi'an then Tibet and back to Beijing. We have 21 days. would like to also ride the train froom Lhasa to Xining. Not sure how long of a ride it is though. Thank you for your time and suggestions in advance PAtricia |

| Suzhou | URGENT: Local guides needed Posted: Mon July 16, 2007 01:53 PM UTC
Is there any possibility to have a local english speaking guide for Suzhou for 1 day trip (we're coming from Shanghai)? I have already bought a tour to China but I refused to take the trip to Suzhou through them as they take you only to Tiger Hill, a Silk factory and Hunble Administrator's Garden. Any names and e-mails are great help to come in touch. We can rent a taxi and with his/her help tour around

Hi
My husband is considering a job in ZJG. Does anyone know are their any expats living there or does everyone commute from Suzhou, Wuxi? Wondering if it would be a nice place to live for us and our baby but not sure if it's a bit isolated? Any tips or feedback would be great and especially would love to hear from anyone living in ZJG. | Suzhou | RE: Andre32 posting on his visit to Harry's Bar Posted: Mon April 2, 2007 08:28 PM UTC
Andre32; I think that the cause of your difficulty is "when you have had one too many" (as you said in your post)... I have been living in Suzhou for nearly 3 years and have been a regular at Harry's for all that time, and so I believe your "...one too many" is the cause of your lapse of memory regarding your bill. And when you have "...one too many", or in your case probably more than the "... one too many" you claim, you can't then turn around and blame the bar staff when you get your bill! The prices at Harry's are lower than all of the "dives" on Bar Street (that you seem to like)! However, if you are prepared to drink moderately and enjoy the great live music and adult fun at Harry's, then you are welcome back my friend!

I will be accompanying my husband on a business trip to Jiangsu in the next few months. (The dates have yet to be confimed). As he will be working all day, I'd like to do more than lounge around a hotel. Any suggestions on nearby sites, food and/or shopping?

| Nanjing | Airport shuttle bus Posted: Tue January 30, 2007 03:27 AM UTC
I plan to stay at Nanjing Danfeng International Hotel, 59-1 Yushi Street, North Floor 5, Nanjing, when I visit a few weeks from now. This hotel rates seem low, about USD9 for a single private w/o bath but is it in a good central location in Xinjiekou? Is there a better one I should consider?
Oh yes, where can I find the airport shuttle bus at Nanjing airport to go downtown Xinjiekou? I don't want to spring for a taxi(Y150 I've heard) since I'm travelling alone. Details on how to take the airport bus, transfers, etc. greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

| Suzhou | Side trips from Shanghai Posted: Thu January 18, 2007 09:29 PM UTC
Hi
I would like to include Suzhou, Hangzhou and Wuzhen as sidetrips to Shanghai. Is it possible to do it in two weeks? Transportationwise in what order should I arrange the cities to minimize travel time? I also plan to visit Beijing next..... Is it easy to do it independently, ie take local transportation? If not, is there a street(like Khao San Road in Bangkok) where one can easily find daytours for the next day or arrange onward transportation among many competing agents? Thanks. |
