Can anyone recommend a place to stay in Xining? Any tips on things to do there, things for kids, places to eat... would be great if you have them.

got one question regarding the way from Golmud to Lhasa. That tourist travel permit to get to Lhasa, do i still need it to get into Tibet (was there last May/June and needed it which was a hazzle since i went individual, not on a booked tour).
IF i still need it, how long does it take to apply for it in Golmud, and do i need it to be allowed to buy the Golmud/Lhasa Train ticket there, or to actually get on the train ?

Do you know any way to avoid the permit in case i need it ?

And does anybody know how hard its gonna be getting the train ticket around end of may ?

I had thought of stopping off a Xian; and then Xining (buying tickets separately for these 2 legs of the trip up to Lhasa). But I hear that Xining may just be a smaller version of what is already up in Tibet... or is Xining worth a visit?

What are the chances of finding a way to move on from Huatugou to Charklik (Ruoqiang) within 1 day? Whether it be 4WD, truck, taxi... whatever kind of vehicle, we don't care.

Has anyone got any contacts for this route? Phone numbers, emails, whatever.

We'll be travelling in early July, and I speak Chinese at a native level.

If any fellow VT member has experience it shall be valuable in giving me guidance. I watched long, big and shining yellowish green area down Zhangmanzhai,Shunhua and Dunle villages(38.06 -38.16 N & 101.01-101.14 E Elev 9153 ft)). It is at the border of Gansu Sheng & Qinghai Sheng provinces. This seems like rice or Rape plantations, but could it be so large?. Could you please give me some information on this ; what is this place, how big is it, its name.

Anybody has any info on the train ride from Golmud to Xining?

Thinking of getting a bus from Lhasa to Golmud,then train from Golmud to Xining.

Any info in price of train-ticket,departure times and time of journey will be greatly appreciated.
