Pompeii Rail / bus travel from Naples to Pompeii
Posted: Mon April 28, 2008 06:19 PM UTC
Hi All,
We're docking for a day in Naples and are desperate to visit Pompeii.
I know we can only get a taste of Pompeii in a few hours, but would love to go.
Tour rates from the ship are stupid prices - is is feasable to get reliable, reasonable public train / bus services to Pompeii from Naples and back again.
If so how much does it cost and how often do they run.
Any other tips would be greatfully received.
Thanks in advance

Pompeii Finding a Guide for Pompeii in Advance
Posted: Sat April 5, 2008 04:52 AM UTC
Hello All,
I have been to Pompeii before and am knowledgable about the eruption of Vesuvio, but I am bringing 2 friends to the site for their first visit in May and I really want them to get a good tour. Can anyone recommend a good tour guide who knows the history of the place, speaks English well, and would be a good guide for a few hours visit to the site. I'd be equally interested in someone for Herculaneum as well.

We will be staying in Sorrento and have transportation, so we're just looking for a reputable guide we can meet at the sites. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Pompeii Can you still walk the real streets of Pompeii
Posted: Sun March 23, 2008 11:21 AM UTC
I have recently been told that you can no longer walk the streets of Pompeii ,and it is only a simulated street that you can walk down. The rest is cordoned off. Can anyone tell me if this is true? And if so, is it worth the money,ie.costs from Rome to Pompeii. Or would Herculaneum give better access?Thankyou .

Pompeii jet boat (hydrofoil) from Castellammare di Stabia to Capri
Posted: Thu March 13, 2008 01:40 AM UTC
Hello my global friends! Can someone tell me if this trip can be taken from the marina at Castellammare and the cost if it does? Also, are their any good restaurants in Castellamare or closeby (don't want to drive into Naples and the hotel restaurant where I'm staying is pricey). Only in town for 2 days before heading back to Rome. I want to see Pompeii, Vesuvio (day 1) and Capri (day 2). Should I make time for anything else?

Pompeii Pompeii in 4 hrs
Posted: Wed December 5, 2007 08:22 PM UTC
I will be arriving in Naples for 9 hrs with a cruise. I know I cannot do the whole of Pompeii in 4 hrs. Can I get some suggestions on what to see when I'm there. Also would I have time to go for a pizza in Naples afterwards?

Pompeii How to get from Amalfi to Pompeii
Posted: Fri October 19, 2007 05:03 AM UTC
We are docking in Amalfi and want to send time there and in Pompeii. The boat leaves at midnight.
So would you recommend a tour guide with driver to Pompeii vs public transportation? If a tour guide/car can you recommend a service?

Pompeii Pompeii Ruins
Posted: Tue October 16, 2007 06:07 PM UTC
When visiting Pompeii( ruins), are there souvenir stands around? Are there lots of steps to maneuver about within the site? How steep are the stairs? What is the best time to visit? Any idea of where the toilets are within the area? What kind of souvenirs can be purchased from this city? Thank you.

Pompeii Train from Pompeii to Rome
Posted: Wed August 22, 2007 12:29 AM UTC
I noticed that it is compulsory to make a train reservation from Naples to Rome.
When do you suggest I make that reservation? Can I do it the day of our trip (September 17)? Should I make it today from home? The challenge I have with making it now is that I have no idea how long it is going to take us to get through the ruins at Pompeii. I would hate to be rushed because we have to catch a train. On the flip side, I would hate to have seen everything and have to wait 3 hours for a train because I made a reservation for later in the day.

We will be in Rome during September. What's the feasibility and
degree of difficulty in getting from Rome to Pompeii for the day?
We have no overnite accommodations in Pompeii, just in Rome.
Do the trains run late enough into the night to get us back?
Thanks much!

Pompeii Best Guidebook for Pompeii
Posted: Mon July 30, 2007 06:44 PM UTC
Hi all - we plan to visit Pompeii on Oct. 13th and would like to see it independently. I've read that you can purchase guidebooks at the site but am wondering if they're all the same or if one is better than another? I've seen "Pompeii Under The Volcano-Guide to the town buried by Mount Vesuvius 2000 Years Ago" (by Edizioi Spano) mentioned but no others. I'd like something easy to use and not too big/heavy/expensive. Suggestions? Also, I've read more than few recommendation on Trip Advisor to see Herculaneum vs Pompeii (if you have time for only one site) as it's better preserved and less crowded. Any opinions from you VT'ers on this? Thanks for your help!

Pompeii where to stay?
Posted: Sun July 29, 2007 04:08 PM UTC
Ciao! My husband and I have one night from Rome to Capri, and we would like to visit Pompeii. We have never been to Italy before, and I can't find a solution in the guide books.
We do not want to stay in Naples. Should we stay in Sorrento, or is it better to stay somewhere near the Vesuvio stop on the Circumvesuviano train? We will be arriving in the evening of Sept. 15 and do not need to be in Capri until the evening of Sept. 16. Reviews state that 3 hours in Pompeii is enough.
Thank you.

Pompeii From Rome to Pompeii and back
Posted: Wed July 4, 2007 12:06 AM UTC
Hi

You have all providea a lot of information. Someone here in the US told me that the trip to Pompeii takes four hours, but I read on this forum that the train that leaves at 7:30 will be in Pompeii ag 9:45; is this true? Also at what time does the train leave to return to Rome? What do you recommend we do for lunch? do we come out of the ruins, is there anything to eat there, or do we bring our own food. Are we allowed to eat inside the ruins? Thanks

Pompeii Pompeii Town Centre
Posted: Thu May 17, 2007 06:37 PM UTC
I'll be visiting Pompeii on a day trip in June. I'm taking the Circumvesuviana train from Naples, alighting at Pompeii Scavi. Is it worth going into Pompeii town centre for an hour or so?

Most of the guides I have read only refer to the ruins. Nothing is mentioned about the town and it makes me think that it is probably not worth taking a stroll into town.

Pompeii Pompeii from Rome
Posted: Sun May 6, 2007 05:42 PM UTC
Hi all.We will be in Rome for 5 days in July (yes, I know, hot, but we ARE South African, we WILL manage!)We want to spend a day going to Pompeii, and are confused as to the best way. There is a shuttle, that gets you there, then you are on your own, but apparently the audio guides available are v good. Then there are the proper tours, but they go via Naples and various factories (cameo etc.). We feel we would rather spend the time at Pompeii, (although seeing a bit of Naples wouldn't be too bad.) Obviously tours are more expensive, but we don't mind if they are worth it. Suggestions please? Any tour company in particular if any of you prefer that route? Thanks a lot guys.

Pompeii HELP
Posted: Sun February 25, 2007 10:08 PM UTC
OK ALL. I have been reading and researching for HOURS. I am traveling to Italy with my Father and his Girlfriend. We are booked with a tour company that arrives in Rome on Sunday 5/20/07. Monday is a guided tour of Rome that does not include evening activities.(free time)All day Tuesday is also a free day. I want to take the train to Naples Monday evening, stay the night so we can get up early and have more time to split between Pompeii (where my Dad wants to go) and the Amalfi Coast (where me and girlfriend want to go) What do we do from Naples? Train or Bus??? If you purchase a bus ticket from Naples to Sorrento, can you get on and off as many times as you want between the 2 locations or do you need multiple tickets? What about on the train?? It is my Dad's 66th birthday that day so I must find a cost effective, time effective solution. Can someone please clear this up for me??? PLEASE!!

Pompeii Pompeii Excursions?
Posted: Wed February 7, 2007 09:02 AM UTC
Hi all,
I am staying in Sorrento over the weekend of 17th February, and am looking to visit Pompeii/Sorrento on the Sunday. My question is, is it better to book an excursion in advance, or make my own way there? I cant seem to find many excursion sites on the web for this, so should it be OK to jump on a coach when im there, and just pay on the day?

Pompeii Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri.... Can it all be done by hydrofoil??
Posted: Mon January 29, 2007 09:42 PM UTC
We will be in Naples in October (cruise). I want to try to figure out a way to do Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri by hydrofoil. I think it can be done with maybe only one double back. Has anyone done it this way?

I know the train is less expensive but I think the water may be nicer. Also, we won't have to cross 5 lanes of Italian traffic to get to the ticket seller.

Suggestions will be very welcome.

Pompeii Jewelry
Posted: Mon October 2, 2006 09:45 PM UTC
I visited Pompei in August, 2004. I bought a lovely cameo, a long, scarf-type necklace of amethyst, and a pair of carnelian earrings. I have really enjoyed these pieces of jewelry and wear them often, however, I lost one of my carnelian earrings and I'm trying to find the name of the store where they were purchased. It is very close to the main entrance of the ruins. If anyone knows this jeweler I would like to have the name and address; e-mail or telephone number.
(Also, my visit was wonderful. My husband and I walked for three hours enjoying even the dust in our sandals; our son ran through the city quickly; found a friend of mine from New Jersey having lunch; played "gladiator" games with other 20-something guys and finally ended his three hours buying baudy post cards.)

Pompeii Tour guide information
Posted: Mon August 7, 2006 04:22 PM UTC
We (three couples)are planning a trip to Pompeii in November 2006 and I am trying to develop information about hiring a tour guide. It appears that some are "hanging" around the entry points, but they may be unauthorized? Can you tell me how you hired your giude and what was the cost? Can we book someone in advance or do we have to do it when we arrive? Do guides charge per person or per group? Will they guide just six people or do they group you in larger groups with others?
