Urumqi-Golmud Posted: Tue February 26, 2008 10:49 AM UTC
Hi
got a question concerning the still missing piece in my routing through china. would like to get from urumqi to Golmud, and wondering if there are busses running or trains even, even a flight would be fine. problem is that in my China travel guide it doesnt really come up with any fancy connection.
If anyone knows any alternative way to get there, like hitchhiking on a truck, and knows roughly how long thats gonna take, iŽd be fine with that as well.
Thanks for any info

Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Shuai Jiao, Sambo, ect. in Urumqi? Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 01:51 AM UTC
I'm considering moving to Urumqi (from Austin, Texas) and would like to know if there are any grappling clubs or classes in Urumqi. I am a BJJ blue belt and would like to continue my training in at least some way once I get there.
Does anyone know if there are grappling schools in the area?
Thanks,

karakul lake Posted: Fri February 8, 2008 04:28 AM UTC
We will be in Kashgar from 13th October this year and don't need to be in Shanghai until the 20th so we would like to do at least an overnight stay at Karakul Lake. Is this something we would do on our own from Kashgar using local transport or would we hire a guide. What about Shipton's Arch is this something worth a visit, also. Any other suggestions.

Uyghur Musical Instruments Posted: Wed June 27, 2007 04:24 AM UTC
I would like to know where I could possibly purchase any small but yet also playable (ie not just for show) Uyghur musical instrument in Xinjiang, and approximately how much it would cost. Not picky about what kind of instrument it is as long as it's a plucked-string instrument. I guess Kashgar might be the best/easiest place, but any leads for anywhere in Xinjiang would be helpful.

Accomodation recommendations Posted: Wed June 27, 2007 04:19 AM UTC
Our current route is approximately Xining -- Huatugou -- Charklik (Ruoqiang) -- Hotan -- Karghilik (Yecheng) -- Yarkand (Shache) -- Kashgar -- Karakul -- Tashkurgan -- Kashgar -- Kuqa -- Yining (Sayram Lake) -- Bu'erjin -- Hanas Lake -- Tian Chi -- Urumqi -- Turpan -- Dunhuang -- Lanzhou. We're travelling in the month of July.
Does anyone have any personal recommendations for accommodation in any of these destinations? We could spend up to 200 RMB/night for a twin with ensuite, but of course trying to keep it way below that for most of the time. A standard of 100 RMB/night should be quite sufficient. To clarify, I have Lonely Planet 2005, Lonely Planet 2007 as well as Rough Guide 2005, and have looked through them. Guidebooks don't really have ALL the information, so personal recommendations would be very much appreciated. We already have a place to stay in Xining.
If you have the address and phone number that'd be enough, no particular need for email addresses! Thanks in advance. :)

Moving on Huatugou -- Charklik (Ruoqiang) Posted: Mon June 25, 2007 06:29 AM UTC
What are the chances of finding a way to move on from Huatugou to Charklik (Ruoqiang) within 1 day? Whether it be 4WD, truck, taxi... whatever kind of vehicle, we don't care.
Has anyone got any contacts for this route? Phone numbers, emails, whatever.
We'll be travelling in early July, and I speak Chinese at a native level.

Lakes, lakes and more lakes! Posted: Mon June 25, 2007 06:25 AM UTC
We're starting in Xining on 1/7 and have to be back in Lanzhou to catch a train by noon 25/7. Our route is approximately Xining -- Huatugou -- Charklik (Ruoqiang) -- Hotan -- Karghilik (Yecheng) -- Yarkand (Shache) -- Kashgar -- Karakul -- Tashkurgan -- Kashgar -- Yining (Sayram Lake) -- Bu'erjin -- Hanas Lake -- Tian Chi -- Urumqi -- Turpan -- Dunhuang -- Lanzhou.
On our present itinerary, we seem to have a total of 5 lakes: Qinghai Lake (Xining), Karakul Lake (KKH), Sayram Lake (Yining/Yili), Hanas Lake (northern Xinjiang) and Tian Chi (Urumqi).
How many days is needed for each? I don't think we need to see all 5?! Which ones should we drop? Mainly looking to take nice photos.

Skipping Turpan, Hotan or Kashgar Posted: Mon June 25, 2007 06:22 AM UTC
Would it be a huge pity to miss any of the 3 destinations listed in the subject line of this post?
My travel companion is adamant that bazaars in Kashgar and Hotan will be disappointing. I beg to disagree based on my own reading of guidebooks and various forums. However he's really not convinced. He's also very insistent on skipping Turpan as he thinks we lack time.

Silk Route Posted: Fri June 15, 2007 05:20 PM UTC
My husband and I would be interested in the Silk route but have no idea where to start.? We would prefer 9 to 10 days duration for the tour because we plan to fly to Japan for another extend 4 days before flying home.
This is in the planning stage and would probably do in 2009.
I have other trips to China on my mind but will discuss later.
Thanks

Bus from Almaty to Yining Posted: Sat June 2, 2007 03:25 AM UTC
Hi,
We will be traveling by bus from Almaty to Yining. We are trying to find out some information about the tickets and the route:
(1) do you know if there is a daily bus from Almaty to Yining?
(2) do you know if we can get tickets the day of the trip, or the day before, or do we need to make advance reservations and/or purchase?
(3) we recently learned that the bus will go through Khorgos. Do you know if this means we have to change in Khorgos? Do you know if there is also (or instead) a direct bus to Yining?
Thank you very much!

Clothing Posted: Mon May 21, 2007 12:29 PM UTC
Hi All,
I have another question. Will I be able to wear shorts or sleeveless tops in the Xinjiang region? I will be going in July and I expect some areas to be quite hot. Or is it more advisable to wear jeans and t-shirt to seem more respectful to the local culture? Thanks a million!

Safety concerns in Xinjiang Posted: Tue May 15, 2007 09:28 AM UTC
Hi all,
My friend and I are planning to take a trip from Beijing to Xi'an to Xinjiang. We haven't decided which area in particular yet. We are not planning to go with a tour and we want to backpack on our own.
How safe is it to travel around Xinjiang with just the 2 of us? Do tourists get attacked in that region?

Kashgar Guesthouse/Hotel Posted: Tue December 19, 2006 07:32 PM UTC
Hi everybody,
Several university friends and I will be traveling to Xinjiang this july on a research grant and we are looking for a decent place to stay in kashgar for about a week. Does anybody have ang reccommendations? We are a group of 6 American, Canadian and Singaporean classmates and half of us are of Han background and are thus a bit nervious to be traveling in Xinjiang if you know what i mean. Can abybody suggest a nice, inexpensive, safe place in kashgar with hot showers and clean rooms? as of now our budget is a bit flexible, but 70-100 RMB for a double room is what we're looking for. Thanks
