Rome Opening times of Ostia antica
Posted: Sun July 13, 2008 05:03 PM UTC
There are so many people in this forum, that allways someone knows something witch is hard to find-so itīs so easy to ask here..So I ask AGAIN a new guestion(our journey to Italy starts soon,23th July,so Iīm here all free time..).Iīve visited Ostia anticas web-site many times( i believe it was www.ostiaantica.net) and every time I try for english version,it doesnīt work.My Italian is poor -based on very little Spanish and guessing. So i didnīt find opening times for the sites. Is it closed some day,or open every day and witch ones of opening times are valid when we come(we are at Rome from 27th July to 6th Agust).I thought that there said that itīs from 8.30 to 18.30 but when I send sms of those lines to my sister, she translated it was only for some weekend.Sheīs busy,so I wouldnīt like to trouble her all time.

Rome No picnic in Rome?
Posted: Sun July 13, 2008 02:38 PM UTC
It was told in Finish media, that itīs not allowed to have picnics at Romeīs ruins and ancient sights, and you will get a 50e penalty for drinking and eating there.Does anyone know, does it really mean that you canīt drink anything?I mean, that canīt I take a bottle of water with me??!!!Wouldnīt it be little too much?In many guidebooks itīs told, that "take something to drink and eat with you, because nothing is sold there".Is it now against law?And is it only in Rome,or is it so for example in Ostia antica, too?
Thanks,if you can help.

I will be flying into the Ciampino airport in Rome at 9.30pm and have booked a hostel in Lido di Ostia....how on earth do I get there? I'm worried that buses, ect. will have stopped and I'll be forced to take an expensive taxi...the directions on the hostel website are only from the other airport, and even those aren't the clearest...any advice??

Rome We want to go from Civitavecchia to Ostia Antica by train Is the easiest way thru Rome?
Posted: Sat July 12, 2008 09:23 PM UTC
Do we have to go from the train station at Civitavecchia to Termini and then catch a train back to Ostia Antica? Or is there a stop sooner that we can get off at and then catch a train back to Ostia Antica? Like the Piramide stop? Stazione? Ostiense? Or?

Also I saw that you can take a boat along the Tiber river from Rome to Ostia Antica. Has anyone experienced that good or bad, cost, and the location to catch the boat relative to Termini or other stop?

I know I can spend mucho EURO for a taxi or shuttle from Civitavecchia to Ostia but trying to keep it reasonable. Any other suggestions?

Does the train from the airport to train station offer the option to check luggage? Is there storage space on the train, such as overhead racks and would they accomodate a large suitcase? Thanks.

Rome By train to Ostia Antica
Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 10:34 AM UTC
I have looked allready from web-sites,but Iīm not sure have I understood right, because Iīve found two(at least) different kind of instructions. So can someone tell, how we should go?
Should we first go by metro to some trainstation or can we go straight from termini? We have rented a flat near Pantheon,so thatīs were weīll start. How long it takes to go?When we are in Ostia, can we walk to ruins,or do we need to take a bus or something?I have been there 16 years ago,but that time I sat in my sisterīs car,and waited untill we were there-I canīt remember was it far from anything, because we went all the way by car.My sister lived in Ceccina(or something like that)in Rome.I wouldnīt want to waiste time by finding easiest way when we are in Rome.I donīt even remember how long it took to walk around there, and was there any restaurants or bars near.We might have visited some beach, but I donīt remeber how far from ruins..I only remember I loved the ruins.
By the way:is there any swimming pools in Rome?I mean where we could just go to swim for a while,or are they only for hotels?Iīm not sure if we would, but just in case..

Rome Park at Ostia Antica?
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 04:14 PM UTC
If we stay in Manciano (Grossetto), can we drive to Ostia Antica (2 hrs), park, take the train/metro to Roma centro, then return at night and drive home?

How late is the parking lot open?

Is there another "commuter rail" connection that would be better?
How about the train from Albinia?

Thanks for any help I can get!

Rome Seaside village not too far from Rome
Posted: Wed July 9, 2008 10:52 AM UTC
We are thinking about maybe flying to Rome in September, but would like to move on from there. We are hoping to get some recommendations for possibly small(er) seaside villages that have good public transportation facilities, since we will not have a car with us!

Radius - about 1 hour from Rome, so that we might do a daytrip or two to Rome as well while we stay there.

Your input is highly appreciated!

Rome Left luggage facilities in Termini train station.
Posted: Tue July 8, 2008 06:35 PM UTC
I need to leave luggage for a day in a left luggage facility in the centre of Rome. I will need more than a standard locker as the case is a large one. Is there a facility at termini, or if not, is there such a facility near any of the stations on the metro network.

Rome Help please - parking/driving in central Rome
Posted: Mon July 7, 2008 04:27 PM UTC
Please help! I have rented an apartment in central Rome with my family for 5 days in August. We are doing a driving tour of Italy and will be arriving in Rome from Tuscany.
1. Will we able to drive into central Rome?
2. If yes, how easy will it be to park?
3. Should we park outside Rome and take the metro? If so, can we leave our cars for 5 days securely? Where should we do this?

Please help, we are really looking forward to Rome but worry about the cars and what to do with them.

Rome Rome 8th July - 14th. A few questions.
Posted: Sat July 5, 2008 02:45 PM UTC
Hi guys n gals!
I'm off to Rome on Tuesday on my own and a bit worried as never been traveling on my own before. If anyone could help me with a few things I'm sure it would settle my mind.
1 - I know a few words/phrases in Italian but not enough to hold a conversation. What's the language barrier like?
2 - I'm staying in a hostel but without a bathroom, where's the best place to take a shower? :)
3 - Can you take photos in the Churches or the Vatican?
4 - Anything I should be worried about?

Although aprehensive I'm really looking forward to my trip. If anyone's out there the same time as me and fancies showing me a few sights let me know.
thanks

Rome Rome Apartments: Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori?
Posted: Mon June 30, 2008 05:03 PM UTC
Hello:

My husband, 2 sons (ages 11 and 6) will be traveling to Rome for 3 days in August. Based on advice we have gotten so far, we have located apartments in the Campo de’ Fiori and the Piazza Navona area. Is one of those areas better than the other?

The addresses we are looking at are as follows:

Via Giulia

Vicolo delle Vacche

Via dei Cartari

Vicolo Febo 2

Via dei Leutari 28

Largo del Pallaro

Via de Giubbonari

If you have any specific thoughts about these, please let me know.

Thank you.

Rome Unique Experiences in Rome (Really Really Off The Beaten Path)
Posted: Sun June 29, 2008 07:13 PM UTC
Rome is my favorite city in the world. What unusual experiences or people were encountered on your last trip there? I chose to travel to Rome during the Christmas season this time to see things in a different way, experience something new.
Like last time I was there,we stayed at Ambacsiatori Hotel on Via Veneto, a totaly unexpected surprise booked by the tour group, it's near the American Embassy, so when any diplomats from other countries or Italian officials come to town thet stay there.
We had just returned from Florence, (which was an incredible experience in it's self) and there were all kinds of limos with different flags on them parked outside, I guess some kind of Government meeting going on, there was lots of gorgeous security guys outside dressed in Armani, with sunglasses on at night, looking very stern & official,I told my friend, Let's go outside and start taking pictures of them and the cars and see what they do, so we thought we were going to be reprimanded in some way, but only in Italy, they started posing for the pics by the cars, some were arguing to change places so we could get their best side, it was hilarious.
The next night we were walking down Via Veneto and we heard this strange organ music, and it was coming from this basement with windows at street level(think Laverne and Shirley) so we looked in and it was a man in a red crushed velvet tux with a gold ruffled shirt and a huge bow tie, playing an old organ, lots of other people dancing who looked like they were from the 60's, the organ player waved for us to come in, but it freaked us out and we took off, I used to think Fellini made up his characters, but now I'm not so sure.

Rome Visiting the Catacombs
Posted: Sat June 28, 2008 12:31 PM UTC
We are hoping to visit the catacombs while in Rome in mid September. There appear to be several sites so hoping some Rome-savvy travellers can advise:
Whether there is one particular catacomb site that is better than the others
What one can expect to see once inside the catacomb
How long should we allow for a visit, including travel time (which I think is by bus from Rome?).
Thank you

Rome Accommodation Query for My Mum & Me
Posted: Fri June 27, 2008 12:25 AM UTC
Hi there,

I'm taking my mum to Rome in July. Can anyone recommend a b&b or hotel with a decent sized twin room please? Ideally looking for a place that is centrally located, clean, has a bit of character and most importantly mum friendly! Budget is 110 euros max, but cheaper would be better as the Euro is quite strong at the moment.

Look forward to seeing your responses. In the meantime, I'm going to look for my passport!

Thanks

Further to "layalaya" 's question below, I am wondering what can one see/do in a couple of hours in Rome, arriving at Fuimicino airport at 08.00 hrs and leaving at 12.00 hrs. Is this time enough to visit Parco Da Vinci,as suggested below? are there any other suggestions? and how about transportation from and back to the airport?

thanks in advance

Rome Share transfer from FCO to Civitavecchia
Posted: Wed June 25, 2008 12:42 AM UTC
We are arriving at Rome FCO Airport September 10,08 at approx. 11:00 AM.
We are looking for anyone who is sailing on the Legend of the Seas and would like to share a shuttle with us to the docks (Civitavecchia).
We have sailed from Civitavecchia before and found the experience by train a little stressful. The cost for a shuttle is approx 120 Euro's for 3 passensgers, more expensive than the train however it's door to door.

Hope there is someone out there to join us.
