IsThailand safe to travel now? Posted: Wed December 31, 2008 08:24 AM UTC
I am supposed to go to Chiang Mai on Sunday (Jan. 4, 2009) but I have been told that it is not safe for Americans (particularly women traveling alone) to go now because of recent political unrest ( recent airport takeover in Bangkok, multiple demonstrations where explosives were used) I don't want to give in to alarmists, but I am considering cancelling my trip. Is there anyone who is there now, or has been there recently, who can advise me of the true conditions and safety for a woman traveling alone? Thanks

Hotel Suggestions? Posted: Sat December 6, 2008 01:34 PM UTC
I will be in Chiang Mai in early February, and would appreciate getting some recommendations for a nice, well-located hotel. The suggestions I have already been given are the Four Seasons, The Sheraton, the Ratchamankha, the Imperial Mae Ping, the Dusit, the Puri Punn, the de Naga, the Mandarin Oriental, and the Oriental Siam. If anyone has stayed at any of these places anad can give me some feed-back to help me make a decision, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks.

Need a days itinerary .... Posted: Tue October 14, 2008 11:28 AM UTC
After a wedding celebration, the plan is to take the guest party (max 40) for a day trip around Chiang Mai/outskirts. A river trip perhaps? Not really interested in seeing/riding elephants all day. Got to be varied and include something for everyone .. young and old. Any thoughts? Did you do something rather special whilst there?/ Thanks for input.

Trying to locate a hotel we stayed at Posted: Fri October 10, 2008 04:15 PM UTC
Hi all.
We stayed in Chiang Mai during October 2007 and plan on returning during January 2009.
We don't remember the name of the hotel we stayed at and enjoyed. We remember the location. I will try to give exact directions:
When leaving the night bazaar on the northern end you turn left (on Tae Phae Street), walk a few blocks and the hotel is on the left side a bit off the street.
There is a driveway to the entrance and then it continues under the building to a small parking lot. The entrance to the hotel is on a side street. On the right side there is a glassed in restaurant/coffee shop. On the left of the lobby is a spa center.
The name may have something Japanese in it, or not.
It is situsted right near Wat Bupparam (with a Donald Duck statue in the front yard).
On the corner of Tae Phae Street is a motorbike rental shop with scooters parked along the way.
If anyone out there can help us, we thank you in advance.

Chiang Mai T-shirt Posted: Mon September 15, 2008 11:05 PM UTC
When recently in Chiang Mai I bought a t-shirt at the Sunday night market. It is 100% un-bleached pre-shrunk cotton, has an elephant on a motor bike/scooter print on the front. It is under the SKY label printed in Thailand (Chiang Mai) telephone no.053-211453. Can anyone from Chiang Mai give them a call for me and ask them if they have a web site as I would like to get another couple of shirts?

Tour agents to trust? Posted: Sun September 14, 2008 07:54 AM UTC
can any one recomend a travel agent/tour agent who does a fair priced visa trip run across the Laos border and back. PS heres a little story. I dropped my wallet containing $120 in the street and went to the banglampuh police station to report it. the officer thought it humerous and asked me for 1000 baht to file a report.--i declined and next day bought a ticket to Changmai. as i was crossing the street the same officer called me over and when i told him i was going to Changmai He asked where I was going to stay and looked horrified that i had no hotel reservation. "It is peak season now from september to january and there is a big festival in Changmai all the guest houses are full you will have no where to sleep".you must go to T.T.A (THAILAND TOURIST AUTHORITY) and they will book room for you" he flagged a tuk tuk down and pushed me in. "this man will take you there and back for 30 baht now go!" (he was calling on his mobile as i left probably to his partner atT.T.A) when i arrived they tried to sell me a expensive hotel and tour package.so i quickly left. the tuk tuk driver was also annoyed i hadnt booked. when he dropped me off the fare was 100 baht. When i got to Changmai all the guest houses were nearly vacant.(and of course no festival)

12th August....The Queens Birthday...Mothers day Posted: Tue July 22, 2008 01:06 PM UTC
We will be in Chiang Mai on the 12th August, which is a public Holiday.
Can you let me know if the city comes to a stop on this important public holiday, or will you still have tour companies doing trips to the Golden Triangle etc?
Are there any special events planned in the city on this day?
I have most of my days planned, but I need to know if it will be possible on a public holiday.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Mike

Thai Massage Course in Chiang Mai Posted: Tue July 15, 2008 11:42 PM UTC
Thinking about leraning a new skill while on vacation in October. Considering Thai massage / therapy course in Chiang mai.
With so many schools that offer the same with a little variations and a bit different cost, I narrowed my choice into 3:
1) Thai Massage School (Old Medical Hospital) http://www.thaimassageschool.ac.th/schedule.html
2) ITM Thai Massage - http://www.itmthaimassage.com/courses.asp#1
3) Thai Massage School of Chiang Mai - http://www.tmcschool.com/program.asp
For locals and foreigners alike, which one is the popular and/or most reputable.
Any experience on any of the above?
Or any other suggestions perhaps?
Thanks in advance.

Treks in/around Chiang Mai Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 03:58 PM UTC
I'm really planning ahead here so please bear with me. I'm only going to be in Chiang mai Feb next year, which is supposed to be the peak season there. Am wondering if I should book any tours/ treks prior to going or are there THAT many operators that i can be safe getting a slot by just turning up then and signing up?
In any case, I've read some comments about how Chiang mai is rather commercialised and the surrounding areas are better like Pai and some other places for which i can't remember the names. Can anyone please suggest a few places/ trek routes? I'll be there for a week and I intend to trek a max of maybe 3-4days.
Thanks in advance.
