In Shenyang, where is the best place to buy thigh high boots? These boots are for my chinese wife that lives there until her visa comes thru to come to the US.
Hi everyone, Ni hoa!
I am going to Dalian in January for approx 1 year. I have many questions, but will stick to the basics, any help is appreciated. I need to know the general day to day stuff at the very least. For example!
1. How much is rent per month of a place in Dalian city of say 4 star?
2. What would it cost for cleaning service? or is this usually included?
3. How much would it be to get a taxi everyday for a journey of 20 minutes?
4. How much would it cost to survive one day i.e perhaps eating lunch and evening meal, not in a top restaurant... just average.
5. Is it a safe place to walk around by yourself .
6. Is there places where you can meet expats or even Chinese ppl as I have no idea what the culture will be like.
7. Importantly how much is it for leisure like a gym for a year?
8. Last but not least...what is the price of a pint of beer in a pub, average?
Hello,
I will be traveling with a friend to Dalian, China in the beginning of July. We will be staying at the Technical University's hotel there. My friend will be attending a conference for the majority of the daytime hours that we will be there. I would like to know some of your suggestions for fun places, historic sights, that you would suggest for a first time traveler to Dalian. I would appreciate day time suggestions for me, and things that both of us could do at night.(Please rate your suggestions) As well we will be spending 2 days in Bejing, any suggestions on making the most of those days. I do not speak mandarin, but I am a very outgoing adventurer and love trying new things.

Does anybody know from where the Dandong ferry to Incheon departs and where to by the tickets, preferably directly from the ferry company?
My chinese is very limited so I don't expect to be able to ask (and understand the answer) just anybody on the street. I´m planning on taking this trip in april 2008 and I hope there´s no trouble getting a ticket during my 4 day stay in Dandong...

BEIJING, HARBIN, SHENYANG.
Travelling alone. Seeking travel companion. Would appreciate VT members who are kind enough and can spare a time to meet for meals, tea/beer.
Fellow travellers who are keen for companionship can be for one or all of the cities mentioned.
Will land in BEIJING on January 10, 2007 heading straight to HARBIN for 5 days by Train, onwards to SHENYANG for a brief stay (perhaps 2 days), then to DANDONG - both cities in Liaoning Province. Back to BEIJING around January 19/20 visiting the best places BEIJING has to offer.
I am a Male, Malaysian Chinese, speak, read and write English. Also speak fluent Mandarin (Putonghua - the language of communication in China).
Thank you.
I would like to share my experience with those who have studied chinese in Dalian before.
I know there are many possiblities to learn chinese in Dalian, but i would like to know if i am the only person who have had really bad experiences with the attitude of the employees at Chinese Departement of the Dalian university of foreign languages.
I am extremely disappointed about the way they treated some students. I am not sure if it is a general attitude of dalian people or if the number of responsibles at the chinese department were less than needed, but i never felt compfortable when i asked them questions. For a foreign student it is a new world, but when i needed help, they sent me away or answered them totally impatient and unfriendly.
I have heard from a friend who contacted this university before, that they were incompetent and he complained about this university. I did not believe him until i made my own experience.
The teaching is acutally not that bad, but if the whole department is unpleasant, studying there will be unpleasant, too.
I would just like to let some of you know that you should better choose another institute to study chinese.
Hi, I would appreciate it very much if any of the VTers can help me with the following :-
1) Is there a bus i can take from either Zhuhai, Zhongshan or Guangzhou to Dalian ?
2) If so, what's the timing and how long is the journey.
3) Any indicative fares so that i can work on my budget.
Time is not a constraint, money is.. so i would prefer to travel either by the bus or the train unless there's no alternative but to fly. Thanking you in advance.
1. Does Shenyang have some type of subway or railway system for getting around the city? If not, is it supposed to get one sometime in the future? When, if so?
2. Is there anywhere on the north side of the city to buy "foreign" type groceries like block cheese (as opposed to the fake slice cheese found in all the grocery stores) or tortilla shells or anything like that?
3. Is there anywhere in Shenyang to find Mexican food either in a restaurant or grocery store?
Please answer even if you can only answer one of the questions! I appreciate any help!
Would anyone on here have the phone number for the Dalian Social Welfare Institute? We are adopting a little girl from there and would like to contac the orphanage.
I will be visiting DaLian later in late August for 10 days, and have been recommended by a business associate to do what he did in Beijing, which was to employ a guide full time during his stay. That way you can see more and avoid the worry of getting lost or stranded without being able to read any signs. By UK standards it cost next to nothing apparently, (and the modest tip she got at the end was worth several months salary)
However I have read elsewhere that if you are not careful you can end up with a guide who is in league with restaurants and souvenir shops, and takes backhanders while you get ripped off. So, any advice please about the best way to find an honest student guide?
Thanks very much.
At present i am in Zhaoqing, China and thinking of moving to Dalian as a matter of a change. Is there any pure rock bars in Dalian that play live bands, i am not talking about places where they only play commerical stuff like Queen = We will rock you, Bon Jovi = It's my life, stuff. But a place that goes a little bit harder like Metallica's music wise or a jukebox that has got a wide selection.
