In 2007 I flew in and out of Xiamen and I am considering making a return visit this October. I will be staying in Shaoxing and from what I can see there are no direct trains and the distance seems a good days journey by bus or trains.
Can anyone suggest routes to Xiamen from Shaoxing other than flying?

Hi we are Kyle and Danielle, two Americans looking to form or join a group going to tibet. We would be interested in traveling together if it works out. We are in hong kong right now and flying to chengdu on mon may 7. We arent sure which hostel we are staying at yet and we dont care which agency we use as long as trip itnerary is good and price is reasonanle. We would like to do roughly 4-8 days in ttibet and take train at least one direction. We have two weeks to see chendu, xian and tibet with tibet our highest priorty. We prefer to return to china after tibet. I have heard its easier to fly to lhasa and take the train out. Email me at fish1534@hotmail.com to see if we can work something out.
Thanks,
Kyle

I want to be able to email my family while I'm there - will be in Beijing and Shanghai. My main email is Gmail (preferred), but I also have a Hotmail account I can use. Are either of these blocked? Do hotels/B&Bs usually have VPNs so guests can access their email? Thanks.

Hello.
Have bought tickets and hotel nights in Beijing for this summer and want to walk some distance on the wall.
Is there any section hwere you can walk for 3-4 hours. Spend the night and the continue for some hours the next day and then get a taxi, bus or train back to Beijing??
What areas will give me the best photo opportunities??
Also. Can anyone give me a tip about small charming places not to far from Beijing with mainly locals??

This may sound like a silly question, but we just want to be sure.
We are interested in going to the Kaili (Guizhou) Sunday Market. We would like to know whether the market is held on every sunday in the western calendar. We doubt since we read that it is held every five days.
We want to visit the market on Sunday 29 July.

My wife and I are travelling between the following Chinese cities:
Beijing - Xian
Xian - Shanghai
Shanghai - Guilin
Guilin - Hong Kong
If cost was not an issue, which of these trips would you recommend train on and plane on? We want to experience trains in China, but we want to do it on the trip that would afford us a beautiful view of Chinese countryside.
Thanks! Appreciate your help.

I remember from my grand parent that my native place in China is Guangdong Shen, Puning Xian, Shan Hou Chi Xiang.
I google, found this place is very near to Shantou and the closest city / town is Liusha.
From the map, the International Airport for me to go there could be either Hong Kong, Shenzhen or Xiamen.
If I am flying from Penang, VT friends who are familiar to these places please help me for a good plan on the mode of transportation to reach Liusha.
Thank you.

This summer we want to travel from Yangshuo/Guilin to Kaili (Guizhou) by public transport. We would like to visit Zhaoxing. We are searching for recent information (schedule, number of buses a day...) on buses from:
Longshen to Sanjiang
Guilin to Sanjiang
Sanjiang to Zhaoxing
Zhaoxing to Congjiang
Congjiang to Kaili
Congjiang to Guiyang
Did anyone recently do this trip and what was your experience? Is it really worth it?
Or is it better to arrange private transport and how to find a driver?
Thank you!

I am looking through the hotels in and around Yangshuo. There are so many that it is a bit confusing. I am looking for something quiet but reasonably close to Yangshuo (maybe walking distance?) I found some that look good but probably require taxis. Is this a big inconvenience?
Could anybody recommend something based on their local experience?
My list so far includes:
-Yangshuo Secret Garden Boutique Hotel
-Moondance Boutique Resort Yangshuo
-CTN Trip Boutique Hotel
-Yangshuo Phoenix Pagoda Fonglu Retreat
-Li River Retreat
-Yangshuo Mountain Retreat
Thank you

My travel plans are so far this : Arrive Shanghai, explore Shaoxing and vicinity, train to Guangzhou, onward either to Guilin and the terraces OR to Dali in Yunnan. it looks a beautiful place but its more travelling.
Trains are not direct either so how much would it cost to fly ? i would go about 5th October for 4 days

Hello VT-ers,
I am heading to China this June! Friend and I definitely are going to Shanghai and Beijing (2 and 3 days respectively, going in between by train), but we are not sure what to add as a third destination. So far we have been thinking of Xian or Guilin - flying from Beijing to either. Which of these do you recommend for this short trip? Some travelers told us that Xian is all about history, so since we already will visit the Great Wall, we should go to Guilin for a different scenery...but I am concerned about distances? Also, I read that Guilin is super-touristy...is Xian as well? Is there something else in the vicinity of Shanghai/Beijing (1-2 hr flight max) that is more nature kind of trip and not as touristy?
Thank you much!
Alla

This is our planned itinerary, I thought I would run it by everyone to see what you all think. Please feel free to give suggestions. We chose all the sites we would like to see and then made an itinerary from there.
Beijing - 4 days, 3 nights
Datong - 2 days, 1 night
Pingyao - 1 day, 0 nights
Xi'an - 3 days, 2 nights
Zhangjiajie - 2 days, 1 night
Guilin - 3 days, 2 nights
Shanghai - 5 days including 1 day for Suzhou
The nights that are not accounted for are the nights we will be travelling either via train or bus.
Our original plan was to fly to Beijing and then end in Beijing again but after research about the National holiday this year we have decided to start in Shanghai instead, this way we get to be there for the Mid-autumn festival but not in Beijing for the parades. We are strongly considering starting in Shanghai and then going clockwise instead of anti-clockwise ie:
Shanhai
Guilin
Zhangjiajie
Xi'an
Pingyao
Datong
Beijing.
This is the plan so far, let me know what you think.
