Siena Spending 2 nights in Siena. Is there a cool castle or other interesting place to stay?
Posted: Mon September 28, 2009 09:11 PM UTC
Maybe in the center or outside... I don't know, some place really cool for 2 nights. Also, we are coming from Florence into Siena, should we take the bus, train, or rent a car? Can we explore Siena without a car?

Siena Identifying Durer painting in Museo Civico
Posted: Thu September 24, 2009 05:40 AM UTC
In 1965 I visited the Museo Civico in Siena and had my attention drawn to a remarkable detail in a Durer painting hanging there. The detail showed a large insect with transparent wings - I believe it was a dragonfly or similar - resting on a plant, possibly even a flower. The detail of the insect wings and their transparency is what remains with me to this day. I can't recall the subject or anything else about the painting except that the insect appears in the lower right-hand corner of the work; I have the impression the painting was about 4-5 feet wide and was probably quite tall since I had to bend down to view the insect.

Can anyone identify this painting for me?

Hi there,
I'm planning to go to Siena from San Gimignano with 2 friends on a Sunday (27 Sep 09). We are not driving and will need to take a bus, train, or, only as a last resort, a taxi. Could someone advise on what options we have available please? Thanks in advance!

Siena bus from Siena to Suvereto (or near there)?
Posted: Mon June 22, 2009 08:47 PM UTC
My daughter is studying in Siena, and wants to travel to Suvereto (in Livorno) on the weekend to visit some family friends. The bus/train trip to the nearest train station (at Campiglia Marittima), is long and slow, with connections in Florence and Pisa. Does anyone know if there's a bus more directly to Suvereto, or Campiglia Marittima, or Massa Maritimma, which is slightly further away?

Siena Purchasing train tickets
Posted: Thu March 5, 2009 01:32 PM UTC
Hello,

I went on the Trenitalia website to purchase some tickets for a stay in Italy at the end of April. From things I've read, it's a good idea to purchase train tickets prior to the trip. It appears on their site that there are no pickup ticket machines at the Siena train station and home delivery is only available in Italy. Is there a sight where I can purchase tickets and have them delivered to the states or an email ticket?

Thanks

Siena transport to vineyards
Posted: Sat February 21, 2009 01:31 AM UTC
Hi
We will be staying in Siena in September 09 and want to visit Dievole Winery about 15km from Siena. We like to do things alone so are not keen on a guided private or group tour. Is there a bus or taxi service we could use ? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. PS we are not into hiking or biking I may add, a bit too old for it.

Siena car rental in Siena on a Sunday?
Posted: Wed August 27, 2008 05:46 PM UTC
Greetings,

The wife and I will be arriving in Siena on a Sunday. Here's the issue: We would have a solid 30-40min walk to our Agriturismo from the train station. Granted, we don't have a lot of luggage, but it would still be a bit of a walk. I was planning on renting a car for a couple of days starting Monday so that we could tour the region, but then I got to thinking how great it would be if a car rental place was open on Sunday so we could just get it then and drive to our agriturismo on day one.

Does anyone know of a car rental place that opens on Sunday? We'll be arriving late afternoon (3:30pm-ish). We can take the train or the bus depending on if the place is in town or outside of it. Thanks for your help. (P.S...Hertz and Avis are not open)

I am planning on being in Siena in November for 2 days. I was thinking of renting a car at Avis to explore the area. I will be arriving in Siena by train. Does anyone know if the Avis car rental is near the train station? I will be staying at Siena Garden Hotel. Can anyone tell me where that would be from the station? Thank you

Siena Siena Story

could anyone tell me why Siena was colored terracotta? I read in wikipedia it was because Sienna was very poor for few hundred years after defeated by Florentines so they didn't have any resource to modernize the city. Is that true?

Siena Nice to Siena in September
Posted: Mon May 19, 2008 09:26 AM UTC
This is second post about how to get from Nice to Siena and thanks to alucas, venice13, swissfondue and leics for their help on train travel between Nice and Siena. It certainly takes a long time by train for what is not that far in Km. I think I read of a tourist train that started in France and ran round the French and Italian rivieras, but perhaps I dreamt it.

I am looking at alternatives. For instance, is it possible to hire a car at Ventimiglia station? I can then drive to Siena, where I was planning to hire a car anyway! Many thanks for any tips or other ideas.

Siena transport from siena to lucca
Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 05:08 PM UTC
We want to travel from Siena on a Sunday in July to Lucca by bus or train. From what I can see, this will mean going via Pisa. Will there be buses from Siena to Pisa and onwards to Lucca on a Sunday? We are thinking of spending a couple of nights in Lucca, before returning home via Pisa.

Siena Cor Magis Wine Tours
Posted: Sun April 6, 2008 12:10 AM UTC
Has anyone here taken a Cor Magis Wine tour recently? There brochure sounds very good and their pricing is within out buget. Of course anyone can put anything on their website. I haven't been able to find any reviews of their tours.

Is it feasible to take the public bus to Montalcino or Montepulciano from Siena? Is there much to see within walking distance of the bus stop?

Siena Pisa airport to Siena via bus/coach?
Posted: Tue April 1, 2008 12:44 AM UTC
Hi all,

Just wondering whether it's possible to get a bus/coach from Pisa airport to Siena? I'm aware of a train which runs there (you have to change at Empoli, so I'm told) but I quite like the idea of going by bus/coach.

Has anyone done this?

Any comments or help would be appreciated guys!

Siena Livorno to Siena on April 25 ?
Posted: Sat February 2, 2008 11:47 PM UTC
We are on a cruise that docks in Livorno on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. We had planned on renting a car but rental agencies seem to be closed on that day. We would like to go to Siena. However it seems to take a long time with a stopover and change .

Is there a direct bus from Livorno to Siena and back ? If so, where can I find the timetable.

Also could you please tell me whether the museums have regular hours or do they have Sunday hours?

Any info will be welcome. Even private tours that are relatively inexpensive.

Thank you very much.

Siena Siena or Panzano or somewhere else??
Posted: Thu January 17, 2008 05:31 PM UTC
We are spending 5 days in Tuscany in May for honeymoon and cannot decided where to base ourselves. We would like somewhere not too busy and someone we can relax, but a town with a bit of activity - restaurants and few bars. We do not want to stay in Florence or Pisa. Friends have recommended Siena or Panzano and now cannot decide which.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks
