| Reykjavík | Breakfast in Guest Houses Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 04:47 AM UTC
Hello,
We are planning on staying in a guest house when we arrive in Reykjavik in a few weeks. Most guesthouses offer breakfast/breakfast buffet in the price. What does the breakfast typically include? Is it a small and simple or a larger smorgasbord type? Thanks jp |

| Iceland | Itinerary and car hire advice!!! Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 10:08 AM UTC
Hi,
I have drawn up an itinerary for my trip to Iceland in late August / early September for my honeymoon - if you could offer any advice to make this trip extra special I'd really appreciate it! Days 1 to 3 - Reykjavik (including Culture Night, and will do Golden Circle tour one day). Day 4 - Saudarkrokur - and horse riding and whitewater rafting in Varmahlid. Days 5-6 - Akureyri (maybe also day trip to Grimsey - cross Arctic Circle) Day 7-9 - Husavik/Reykjalid - do whale-watching tour, museums, whale museum in Husavik, then day trip to Myvatn, and then day trip around Jokulsargljufur national park. Day 10 - Egilsstadir / Seydisfjordur - including going to Seydisfjordur for sea kayaking. Day 11 - Hofn, including trip to Vatnajokull icecap. Days 12-13 - Skafatafell, see national park, snowmobile tours on the icecap (are these possible in September?) Day 14 - Vik - Skogar (folk museum) - Hella. Day 15 - Vestmannaeyjar Day 16 - End at Northern Light Inn for Blue Lagoon etc. on way to airport Day 17 - Return home The hotels are booked so I'm not looking for any major changes to the route, just any extra suggestions or if anything isn't feasible! Also, I'll be looking to hire a car. Is a 4WD car essential for my route (I'm generally not going too far off the ring-road)? Also, could anyone recommend a good car hire place - I've heard that local car hire firms offer much better rates. I was planning to get the car when we're done in Reykjavik and drop it off at the airport at the end? Many thanks for any help you can give! |

| Reykjavík | Blue Lagoon and city stroll... all in a day? Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 09:57 PM UTC
Hi,
Will be on a cruise stop in Reykjavik from 7am - 4pm (on a Friday in August) and was wondering if there will be enough time to take public transport to the Blue Lagoon, and then spend some time strolling around the city before heading back to the ship? I found a bus operator (Reykjavik Excursions) that operates a bus tour for 3 hours and the tour leaves/returns to the bus terminal. Is the bus terminal close to the cruise terminal? And also, if there is just a little more time, would like to sample some local fare in town. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Regards, Jeana |

| Iceland | Looking for partners and/or advice - iceland june 2008 Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 12:05 PM UTC
Hi there!
My girlfriend and I (we're both 24) are going to Iceland from the 1st of june to the 14th of June 2008, and we're looking for travelling buddies! We thought it could be smart to share the cost of a car rental, because we're trying to do this trip the cheapest way possible... We had in mind to rent a car to go and see the westfjords, either renting a compact car or a 4x4. For the moment the approximate budget is 500€ for 4 days with a compact car, gasoline included. As I said, this is only conjecture based on the price of gas over there... We're planning our trip as follows : - 4 days of road trip from Reykjavik to the Westfjords and back to Reykjavik. - take a bus pass in the south (120iskr) to Skatafjael, and back to Landmannalaugar. - from Landmannalaugar go for a trek to Skogar or Thorsmork (5 days I think). - go back to Reykjavik maybe with one or 2 more stops - 1 or 2 days in Reykjavik and fly back home on the 14th of June We'll wait for your comments and advices maybe? We still have many questions about conditions of the trek, weather forecast, buses rates, accessibility of westfjords by car... We can also change this planning, it is not final... Cheers! Julien |

| Grindavík | Blue Lagoon Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 03:10 PM UTC
Hi,
Being a typically very body concious brit, I was wondering if someone could give me a little more information regarding the changing and showering facilities at the blue lagoon. When we say 'communal showers' is there any kind of seperation at all (like walls or curtains) or is it one huge square room with no chance of hiding? I'm thinking that at least if it's built in a style where you can get a little privacy I could go in winter while it won't be as touristy so it'll be fairly empty. I'd like to go, or to any pool really while i'm there but I'm guessing they're all the same, but I can't afford the £67 for a private shower room, and as someone who hasn't even been brave enough to go out in a swimming costume for several years, I think completely open showers will be too big a jump for me. Thanks, Charley |

A friend of mine who used to live in Iceland twenty years ago said there was company called Blue Nose in Iceland who conducted one day airplane tours to Greenland and over the North Pole.
I'm not able to find such a tour over the internet. Does anyone know if such tours still exist? |

| Iceland | Questions about car renting in Iceland Posted: Tue April 15, 2008 08:57 AM UTC
As part of planning my trip to Iceland in May I have a few final questions:
It might be a dumb question but yesterday hubby and I started considering renting a car and driving around either West or South Iceland. I found 4 day trips and we're not at all interested in all the stops the itineraries suggest and we'd like to sort of build our own itinerary by combining 2 of them. My question is: does one get a free road map or does one have to buy it when renting a car? If we have to buy it, where do we do that and how much (estimate) can it cost? We'd also like to know how much the gasoline costs per liter. I know prices change everyday (or every week) but we'd like to have some sort of estimate because we have to return the car with a full tank if we don't wanna pay for that :) (sorry, first time I look into car renting). Anything else you guys feel I should know prior to renting the car is welcome. Our base is Reykjavik. Thanks in advance. |

Hi all!
I've read that the best time for whale watching in Husavik is between June and July, but I don't really know whether there is a particular moment of the day when it is more probable to see the whales! Since they offer many tours per day I was wandering which one shouldI book in order to have the most possibilities to see whale....any tip? Thank you! gmg |

| Iceland | Weekend in iceland - suggestions??? Posted: Mon March 17, 2008 12:16 PM UTC
Hi folks
I am coming to iceland and staying in the capital from thursday night ((20th March - late) till monday morning this week. We are putting together an itenarary and would be grateful for some advice for some of the main activities Friday we are planning to spend most of the day at the Blue Lagoon. Saturday night we hope to do a Northern Lights trip, and then sunday we would like to do the Golden Circle, and include a bit of snow-mobiling with the tour. Is it better to book these tickets from abroad before we leave (i'm in UK) or would it be cheaper when we get there? Also do you have any recomendations for companies that are reliable and value for money? Any help would be much appreciated! Guy |

| Iceland | GPS Road Units / Maps Posted: Sun March 16, 2008 05:39 PM UTC
Any recommendations for GPS Units that have good solid maps for Iceland. I'm in the market for a new GPS Unit for use in the States, but I also anticipate making a trip back to Iceland in the next couple of years and would like to have the ease of GPS rather than having to continually flip through my copy of The Visitor's Key (which incidentally is getting pretty worn at this point).
Thanks - jim |

I am planning on visiting Iceland in mid May. Does anyone have an idea on how long it will take to make the drive from Reykjavik to Latrabjarg considering the road conditions and time of year? As an alternative, how about just going to the Snaefellsjokull area?

| Iceland | How to read an address Posted: Mon February 25, 2008 05:33 AM UTC
hi, I have an address here that I don't know how to read it exactly.
It is Verbùð 8 Geirsgata 101 Reykjavik. Or if it doesnt show up correctly due to the symbols: Verbuo 8 Geirsgata 101 Reykjavik That's Verbuo with an accent on the u and a twiddly thing attached to the top of the o. Is Verbuo the streetname or Geirsgata? You see, I think I know that a gata is a street! And would the street number be Verbuo no. 8, or no. 8 Geirsgata or Geirsgata no. 101 ? What does Verbuo mean? |

| Iceland | Airport to blue Lagoon in the morning? Posted: Mon February 4, 2008 06:06 PM UTC
Hello! Me and my girlfriend are going to Reykjavik this weekend from Friday morning to Sunday morning. We'd like to go straight to the Blue lagoon from the airport but the planned trips and buses only run in the afternoon.
Is or best bet to get a taxi from the airport to the lagoon and then the bus onto the city centre? If so, does anyone have any idea how much this may all cost? Or, would any recommend going to one of the outdoor pools near Reykjavik city centre rather than the blue lagoon? Thanks very much!! |
