We will be in Trier for our Grandson's wedding in early January. We would like to travel to Prague for 3 or 4 days. Is it best to take a plane or train? Where is the train station in Trier and also in Prague?
Where are some good places to go in Koblenz if there is bad weather? Museums, monument tours, cafe's, connected stores ... any good ideas.
I have visited Koblenz in the summer and fell in love with the town. I also know what to expect as far as walking - will return to Koblenz the first week of December with a person who does not like to take long walks.
The tickets I'm purchasing are not exchangeable, they must be used on the train originally booked. We will be in Koblenz approximately from 11 AM to about 18:00. Ideally it will be cold, maybe a bit cloudy, but perfectly great and walkable (Plan A) ... however in the event it's rainy and windy, I need Plan B.
So if the weather is horrible - what are some good suggestions on what to do from 11 to 18:00?
Based in Karlsruhe, would like to take a day trip to Koblenz early December this year. I've been looking at the Die Bahn site and am starting to wonder if it would be a good idea to pre-purchase these seats - looks like things are getting full. I would love to return here for a day in the winter.
Also, although I know weather cannot be predicted (I have already looked at all the weather web sites and know the averages) - do you have any experience on how snowy and *windy* it gets?
Would a visit from around 11 AM to about 6 PM be fine, or will it start getting way too cold after 5 PM (sun down) ?
Arriving by train from Landstuhl. Want to do a quick tour of some wineries in the Mosel, stay overnite, and depart by train the next morning for Brussels.
1. Any suggestions for B&B or similarly inexpensive hotel in the immediate area of Trier?
2. Any suggestion for a rental car agency there or a suggested coach tour to the Mosel half day, afternoon?
Vielen dank
Rolf
Does anyone know if the Lander Ticket that lets us travel all day in the Rheinland-Pfalz area includes free travel on KD boats? We have the option of using a rail pass day that gives us that coverage but the Lander Ticket is a more economical option. Thanks
It's been a while since we flew in or out of Frankfurt from US. Do most all international flights going to and from Terminal 1? I keep looking at train schedules and probably ought to know that for sure! Two other things on airport: ATM machines? Tchibo coffee? These both available in arrival hall? Got to be sure that I can get essentials right away!
In June of next year we will be traveling by train from Bacharach (or St Goar, haven't made up our minds which) to Interlaken. We have two nights to do this and I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion of something nice to see in that time. Can either be two nights at one place or (slightly less appealing) one night each in two. We've spent a lot of time in Switzerland so probably looking for something in Germany. We really prefer small towns, natural beauty. Thanks for any help.
How can I get from Trier to Paris before 1pm (the time I have to be at the airport) on the same day? I can only find a train from Luxembourg at 5am, but that means getting there by 5am which is a bit tricky. Other trains don't arrive until 2pm which is too late. I can't find a goo car rental company that'll do a same day one way trip between the 2 countries. Any coaches or busses?
We are planning a trip and think that we'd like an apartment in Bacharach for 5 days. We will probably have a rail pass and wonder if anyone has any suggestions for day trips for a couple of those days. We will go to Cochem one day. We have spent time along the Rhine in the past. We look more for natural wonders (pretty scenery) than large cities as long as we can get there but rail. Any ideas? I know this sounds a little odd but we love factory tours of any kind also. Thanks
The TU kaiserslautern have some dealings with DB to make students burdenless to travel to cities around kaiserslautern for free with the semester ticket. I want the map to know to which cities we can travel for free with semester ticket.
And also if there is any facility to travel with this ticket by local transportation(ex : Trams,Buses in saarbrucken) in the cities of range.
I am looking for the best possible use of one of my last days in Germany. I will be staying in Trier but would like to make a day trip to somewhere that is reachable by train and that is really pretty. Sounds soppy, I know, but I want a good last memory of the area (for this trip anyway!). Any suggestions?
Hi, I have been reading great info on the forum and i am planning on a Train/Ferry trip on 5/16 from Frankfurt to Koln.
1. Frankfurt airport -> Rudesheim or Bingen
Q -My flt arrives at 7:20am and i need to get to either of these 2 places by the train asap to catch the KD ferry. Which pier is easier and quicker to get to?
2. Rudesheim or Bingen to Koblenz
Q- I read the K-D schedule posted on the web but it appears that they only have ferry departs at 9:15, 10:15 and 14:15 (fm Rudesheim) and 9:30, 10:30 and 14:30 from Bingen. Orignally, I want to take the ferry to go all the way to Koln, but it seems like only the 10:15 ferry have the 2nd part (Koblenz to Koln) of the ride. I doubted if I can make it to either of these piers fm the airport to catch that. Now i also read some conflicing info about K-D runs hourly during the peak season. Is it true?
I also read that there is no need to buy the ferry ticket in advance and there are 20% discount off for train & ferry ticket. How and where can i get it?
3. From Koblenz to Koln,
I can spen a nite in Koln or Koblenz and then need to take another train ride on Sunday late afternoon to go to other city. Is there anything to see in Kolenz at nite? Or it is better off to just go to Koln straight?
4. Questions on the DB, if I get the discounted ticket but end up missing the train, can I still use the ticket? Is it worth it to spend more on the 1st class than the 2nd class ticket?
5. Can I take my carry on lugguage with me on the K-D line?
My wife and along with another couple are staying 3 days in Bacharach. We are going to take one day to see the Rhein and would like to spend another day @ Burg Eltz. After seeing the castle we would like to take a cruise on the Mosel. 1) Any recomendations on a cruisline or a common place they launce from (like Rudesheim on the Rhein) & 2> would you recomend a cruise on the mosel. Is this something that would be nice is what I mean. Thank you very much for your time....gustave
I will be traveling to Trier in a few weeks and hoped to get a good deal on some automobile headlight bulbs while I was there (since Philips is a German company). Does anybody know a place in Trier that sells auto parts? Thanks.
I'm currently planning my honeymoon and will be visiting the rhine region as the last leg of our trip. We're flying in from Reykjavik and likely landing in Frankfurt Hahn, and I'd like your opinion on the itinerary below.
1. Flight gets in to Frankfurt Hahn at about 8.30pm. Am deciding between the cities Koblenz, Cologne and Trier. Staying for 2 nights and hoping to explore at least 2 of the towns.
2. Am thinking of staying in a castle and am thinking of castle Liebenstein at Kamp-Bornhofen for 2 nights. Hoping to cover the last town that wasn't done in part 1 above, and also St. Goar. Basically will be cruising along the river. Would anyone have other romantic hotels in mind that's hopefully, not too expensive? My budget is limited to a max 150 Euro (Ouch!) a night and this will be the most lavish part of the trip.
3. Shopping at outlet city, Metzingen. Am thinking whether staying in Stuttgart for 2 nights is a good choice or maybe i should pick a town along the rhine and do a 1 day trip to Metzingen from there? Any suggestions please? I will be leaving for Frankfurt airport directly on this last leg on a 10pm flight.
Hi all, Oh gosh, it doesn't look like anyone has been in this forum for a while! Hopefully someone can help me out.
I am going to Spangdahlem at the end of this week to visit my fiance. I am flying into Frankfurt and catching the train to Speicher. Can anyone tell me how to get to the train station from the air port?
Hi! We are looking for a nice place to stay alone the Rhine the night before we fly out of FRA at 10am. An hour drive is not too far, but I would like closer, so there is less to go wrong.
We are going to spend 3 days visiting the Lahn and Mosel Valleys in late May.
Where to stay?
We prefer:
* mid priced small "local" hotels or pensions of gasthauses with a friendly homey atmosphere.
* My wife and I are in out mid 60's, very physically active
* We'll have a car, so parking will be a consideration.
* Prefer either a small town or Koblenz where we can explore in the evening, then drive/explore the Mosel and Lahn during the day. Then on the last day drive up the Rhein to Frankfurt.
* We're figuring somewhere in the general area of Koblenz would be central for us.
Do you have suggestions?
The hotels we are considering so far are:
* Zugbruecke
* Merkelbach
* Weinlaube
* Schloss (in Koblenz)
* Burg Liebenstein (further away, in Kamp-Bornhofen)
* maybe something near Bad Ems?
My husband and I (both in our 60's) are planning a 6 day trip to Germany.We will be arriving in Frankfurt Aug.27 6:30am. We've been told the best place to start our visit to the Rhine is Mainz north. Also mentioned is Rudesheim. We wanted to stay at gasthaus-stahl.de,looks nice on the internet.
My question: Are these towns close,of course the thought of no speed limits interest my husband.(me not so much) Is it a good idea to rent a car or travel by bus and train. We are interested in wineries. My husband is not much of a walker
Also want to take a river cruise
Any help with setting up an itinerary would be of great help.
Some years ago I visited a castle ruin not far from Trifels and Berwartstein, but I'm not sure if it was in France or Germany. From the castle ruin, you could see a farm/restaraunt across the valley that had hotel rooms. We drove from the castle to this restaraunt, and had a wonderful meal. It had maybe a dozen or so hotel rooms, and the farm was right outside the door.
I've been unable to find this place since, but would love to return. Any ideas?
Does anyone know if there is temporary housing available in Trier? I have never been to a hostel, but do they limit they number of nights you can stay? I am wanting to spend 1-2 months in Trier come July. I have been looking around and only came across one decent website, that I actually saw in another post here. If anyone has an advice where to find housing I would appreciate it : )
