| Japan | Cell phone rentals at airports Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 12:08 PM UTC
Hi,
I am looking to rent a cell phone for my stay in Japan. I understand that I can rent phones at the Narita (Tokyo) and Kansai (Osaka) airports. However, the difficulty lies in the fact that I arrive and depart at different airports. As you could imagine, returning the phone could be a bit troublesome. Are there any suggestions or other options that I can try? |

| Japan | Places to visit from Osaka to Tokyo Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 10:04 AM UTC
I am going to Osaka for a business trip and after that I will have 3 free days.
What are places I should go to? My friends are telling me Hokane - the nature park, the Osaka acquarium, Universal Studios, Tokyo - the buildings, shopping centres, Tokyo Disneyland, Mount Fuji are some places. Any other good places to go to if I am going from Osaka to Tokyo? |

| Tokyo | Where its happening! Posted: Wed May 14, 2008 02:03 AM UTC
Greetings,
I am coming for the first time to Japan from May20-27th. I would love to find a used record store, and see some live music. I am interested in 60's garage, punk or an unusual night spot. I hope to find something down to earth not a pricey to get in pretensious place. Also are there any magazines for expats that might be in english that list cultural evfents or night life happenings? Thank you! |

| Japan | Cost Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 04:37 PM UTC
I am thinking about Japan as an option for next year. I know its expensive, but are there any hints as to how to go and and not pay ultra high prices? Most package tours are quite expensive and though I did see some tours nicely priced, but then its only Tokyo and Kyoto for like 8 days.

| Tokyo | Touring the Imperial Palace Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 07:05 AM UTC
Hi I am a little confused on how I can tour the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. I read that we need to register for a "pass" to gain entry. I did and I understood that the tour will be conducted in Japanese. I don't understand Japanese but I registered because I wanted to visit. I understand that the inner palace is out of bounds.
Do we really have to walk with the group? The palace grounds do not accept walk-ins? If I have a pass but do not wish to join the ground, can I just use that as an "entrance ticket" to roam around the permissible area? Thanks. |

I read somewhere that Saijo-ji in Kyoto would be open to the public without reservations sometime this autumn. Normally, you need a reservation and half a day to visit this place. Was I reading wrong? Can anybody confirm this?

| Kyoto | Onsens Posted: Wed May 7, 2008 08:46 PM UTC
I am taking my mother to Japan in November to enjoy the momiji. We will start our 1-week trip in Tokyo (3 nights), then take the train to Matsumoto Castle for the day, and then head to Kyoto (4 nights). Along this route (or thereabouts), can anyone suggest an Onsen we can stop at so I can give my mother an interesting taste of Japanese life for a few hours? Nothing too crowded, or my mother might balk at the 'exposure' (I've been to an onsen in Beppu so i'm familiar with the lack of bathing attire required). Something picturresque? Outdoor? I was thinking maybe Nikko but that might be a little too far out of the way if I want to be able to hit Matsumoto Castle and then on to Kyoto in 1 day.

I found a really cheap ryokan that costs ¥4000 per night but there is a curfew at 11:00 pm. I'm wondering if I'm going to miss much if I have to get back by then. How is Kyoto's nightlife?

| Osaka | Rinku Premium Outlet Osaka- How Far? Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 08:44 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be putting up in Kyoto for 3 nights. Thought of going to Osaka for a day and also to visit the premium outlet. Can some one help me with the following queries: 1) I read from the outlet website that it is 44 mins from the Tennoji Station on the JR Hanwa line. Just wondering how far is Tennoji from the main JR station in Osaka? 2) Do I have to change trains? If so, where? 3) I suppose I can use my JR rail pass? 4) Is there a more direct train way for me from Kyoto? Thanks!!!!! |

| Kyoto | Osaka or Kyoto? Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 02:57 AM UTC
I'm planning my trip to the Kansai area around june 6th to 10th and I need to decide where I should stay
First, how long does it take to go from Osaka to Kyoto? and how long does it take? Second, which city should I base on? If it's not a big distance to cover, I'd like to stay in one city than staying two different places. Thanks in advance |

I had read from the lonely planet regarding how to go Shikotsu-Toya National Park. However, I'm still confused. Does it mean I have to alight at the H41 Toya station? If not, how should I go there? Thanks Kenny |
