Province of Newfoundland and Labrador two week trip
Posted: Sun May 25, 2008 01:46 AM UTC
I’m planning a two week trip to Newfoundland in August. I will be driving from Portland, ME through Nova Scotia and taking the ferry to Channel Port Aux Basques. From there, I’d like to head to Gros Morne and then across the island, taking the ferry back to NS from Argentia. Is this doable with the two week time limit? How long should it take to drive across to Argentia? I wouild love to get to St. John’s as well if possible. Am I taking on too much here? Thanks for any help!

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Gros Morne National Park
Posted: Mon December 10, 2007 06:24 PM UTC
One thing that I really want to see when I visit the park is the spectacular view of the fjord on the long range traverse seen here : http://www.grosmorne.com/things.htm

I only have a limited amount of time in the park 4-5 days and as much as I would like to do the long range traverse hike, I don't nessecarily want to devout my entire trip to it.

Does anybody know if it is possible to get to this spot in a single day, camp the night around there if need be and then return without doing the entire 35 km route?

Thanks in advance

But need suggestions as to 'what to do' for 3 days if we should be limited to St John's/nearby area with transportation via taxi/public transportation/tour bus, etc. Many thanks.

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Ferry Waitlist
Posted: Wed May 23, 2007 02:39 AM UTC
Heya,
My husband and I are driving to St John's with a UHaul(from Halifax) and so must put ourselves on the waitlist for the ferry. We only have the truck for four days and I am gettin a little worried about how long we may be waiting. We wanted to take the Port aux Basques ferry and enjoy the chance to see the province on the way. Any suggestions about negotiating wait times? How far ahead do we need to line up? We'll be driving around Aug 31/ Sept 1.
Thanks for any suggestions as we've never done this and we're on a budget!

We will then be taking a ferry from Goose Bay to Cartwright(departs 5pm , travel through the night, arrives 6am, 11 hours ), driving from Carwright to Blanc Sablon, then taking a Ferry from Blanc Sablon to St. Barbe, NFLD ( all within 21 hours !!!) We have never traveled on a ferry and would like advice on this type of travel. What is a dormitory berth? What kind of accomidations should we get as a family?

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador I need help with my vacation please
Posted: Tue April 17, 2007 11:26 PM UTC
My husband and I will be visiting Newfoundland in August and need some help with a few things
1) I am traveling from Toronto and are planning to fly into ST Johns we are planning on staying one night there, is there any hotels you can suggest we stay at. A lot of people have been telling us we must visit George St, where is this and why is it so popular.

2) we are going to visit Bay De Verde for a day (that is where my father is from but he is deceased now) how fare of a drive is it from St Johns, does anyone know of any places we should stop and see on our drive to Bay De Verde.

3) I believe I still have relatives living there but have just lost touch with them, how would I go about finding them.

4) We are renting a car and want to plan a road trip and end up where ever we end up are there any suggestions for us we would love to do our road trip along the coast, is there a high demand for accommodations in Newfoundland should we take a risk and not have anywhere to stay for a day.

I know this is a lot of questions and any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Where to spend the extra day
Posted: Mon April 2, 2007 06:11 PM UTC
Hi All,

We (family with 2 girls ages 10 & 12) will be visiting Newfoundland this summer for 14 days (starting mid July). Our itinerary has us taking the ferry onto the island at Argentia, and leaving at Port aux Basques. Our stay will be:

3 days in St John's,
2 days in Trinity (Bonavista peninsula),
5 days in Gros Morne,
2 days in L'Anse Aux Meadows, and
1 day in Port aux Basques

We will be dragging our tent trailer along, and plan on staying in B&B's as well to break up the camping. Here is my question. We originally planned on visiting Twillingate to break up the trip from the east coast to the west coast. Twillingate will take an additional 3-4 hours of driving from the Trans Canada Hwy. Is it worth the drive? Will it offer anything different that the other places on my itinerary does not have in terms of scenary? The big attraction of Twillingate for me is the icebergs, but will I be able to see the same at St Anthony?

Other options that I have include:
Labrador
more time in Gros Morne
more time in Bonavista
side route somewhere else (suggestions appreciated)

What do you think I should do with the extra day?

Also, any recommendations on camp grounds in Gros Morne? Any particular camp sites that I should try to get?

We will be staying in the corner Brook region mid June and would like to see Icebergs . A friend has suggested driving up to St Anthony but I believe this is a 5-6 hour trip. Can anyone suggest another area to see this and is it worth the trip?

New World Island public transport between seattle and Anchorage
Posted: Thu March 15, 2007 06:33 AM UTC
Am planning a trip to Alaska. Would like to 'drive' the Alaskan highway one way and ferry the other. It appears it is not possible to hire a car in Anchorage and leave it in Seattle or vancouver. So my question is is there a bus or a train that runs between Seattle and Anchorage?

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador 7-10 Day Trip To Newfoundland
Posted: Fri March 2, 2007 09:10 PM UTC
My wife, (will be 9 month old) son and I are planning a trip to Newfoundland in late July. We are thinking about going to St. Johns, Bonavista, Trinity, Twillingate, Terra Nova and Gros Morne (with possibly a trip up the western coast to Viking sites) for 7-10 days. Just wondering if people think this trip is doable in that time frame, if there are any baby friendly places to stay or eat that you know of, and what types of hikes/boat rides we could take. Also does anyone recommend any other places to go and see. We will be renting a car. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

St. John's help with teen's activites
Posted: Fri January 12, 2007 01:32 AM UTC
My husband and I will be coming to St. John's in late June with a group of about 10 teens (ages 15 - 18) and participating in a robotic competition at a local university. What suggestions does anyone have to keep them busy and happy outside the competition? I know there are whale watching trips...what else would catch the eye of a teen (outside museums). Thanks for any assistance!

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador the bus - is it worth it?
Posted: Mon December 4, 2006 01:41 AM UTC
I'm looking into going to Newfoundland in late May and early June. I'll be renting a car while in St John's, but, because of the strange mileage limitations in the province, I probably won't be able to get very far outside of the city. So I'm considering taking a flight into Halifax, then riding the bus/ferry/bus route cross-country to St John's. However, this is actually more expensive than flying.
My goal is to see the landscape and get a sense of the two provinces. Is this a good way to do that? Would I be missing too many things by not being able to get off of the bus and onto the side roads? Or can I see quite a bit on the bus?
I've thought about getting off in Gander, or somewhere on the route, spending the night, and then catching the bus the next day onto St John's (my timeframe is somewhat open).
Any advice would be appreciated, especially from those who have taken the DRL bus across the island.

Thanks,
Colin

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Sights to see on the Avalon Peninsula?
Posted: Tue July 25, 2006 04:31 AM UTC
Hey all, I'm going to be in Newfoundland Sept. 8th-17th, I'll be traveling with my mother, we rented a car and are planing on touring around the Avalon Peninsula

We have some sight in mind already, Signal Hill, Cape Spear, George Street, and a whale watching boat trip out of Bay Bulls. Beyond that what are some good sights we should be looking for in our tour around the peninsula? We were planning on spending the first two days in St John's then moving out and touring around staying at motels and B&B's is Sept a heavy tourism time that we should be booking in advance?

Thanks All,

Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Please help with Transportation in Newfoundland
Posted: Sat July 22, 2006 12:30 AM UTC
Hi! I didn't realize it would be difficult to get around Newfoundland. I had planned to take the ferry from Sydney N.S. near the end of August and make my way up to St. Johns for my flight out on the 3rd of Sept. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to carry an extra passanger and will be travelling these directions near the end of August? I could take the ferry across anytime after the 24th. I would be willing to help with gas and even rental costs if it is another traveller.
Thanks!!

St. John's Pippy Park Trailer Park
Posted: Sun July 9, 2006 05:26 AM UTC
We (couple with a 22 year old son) will be visiting St. John's, Newfoundland at the end of August. We are flying into St. John's and will be renting a car. My son moves into university residence on September 1st. We thought of camping three nights at Pippy Park Trailer Park campground(without a tent). However, we will be carrying our sleeping bags in our suitcases and would like to sleep under the stars. The other 3 nights will be spent at a B&B.

1) What kind of weather does St. John's usually have around 29th August?
2) Is Pippy Park campground safe for tourists and campers?
3) How crowed or how deserted is the campground at the end of August.

Any assistance in providing information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vilma
