Hello, Will be in Halifax Sept13/17 and have an interest in harbour's etc.,. Would a driving trip (-1-day) travelling east of Halifax along the southern coast be of worthwhile. Love the island, second visit in 2 years and pretty well know any trip is good but considering we are only here for 4 days we would prefer to see the best................Thank-you
We are planning a trip to Nova Scotia this fall and are very interested in viewing and photographing the fall colors while we are there. We expect to arrive in Halifax on or about Oct. 10, stay in that area for three days, and then drive to Baddeck, remaining in that area for two days. Have we chosen a good time and locations to observe the fall foliage at the peak?
Incidentally after we depart Nova Scotia we will be driving across Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick on the way back to Maine.
Our schedule is flexible, so we could arrange to arrive earlier or later if that would be advisable to catch the fall colors at their peak.
Any advice in this subject will be greatly appreciated.
Will be on a cruise ship visiting Halifax for a day come October. Looking to take a tour of the city and Peggy's Cove and hire a local tour operator. Any recommendations? Also, what are the must see and do sights and attractions to vist while there for the day? Thank you.
My wife & I are planning to camp 2 nights in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in early August and are trying to decide which of the 2 areas above would be best.
We would prefer to stay on the west coast (Cheticamp), but want a campsite on/near the coastline (Ingonish).
We want the best location for stunning scenery & a good selection of hiking trails. A good beach would be a bonus. Also, would the water be warmer on the Gulf side rather than the Atlantic side ?
We recently purchased a home on Cape Breton Island and will be moving there next year. We are spending the summer this year and my husband is already there. He is working on the acreage and has experienced those little black flies that bite! Does anyone know if there is a way to #1 reduce the numbers on a property and #2 Is there a bug spray or other kind of repellent that actually works against these little buggers?? ouch! Any help you could give would be really great! Thanks!
I am planning to be in NS from oct 2 - 11th and I will be staying in cape breton island area for maybe 2-3 nights.
my questions, do I need to bother to drive from halifax to
212 to Dollar lake park , then Detour to 357, then to 7 to spry bay and Taylor head park Continue to sherbrooke
then to Port Bickerton to see the lighthouse
then stay somewhere at Antigonish
or should I do halifax, truro, economy, five island park, Parrsboro, Joggins
then Amherst and stay at wentworth for a night, then next day drive up to cape brenton?
I am planning to stay in cape Breton Island for 2 nights, one night at pleasant bay and another at Baddeck.
I will drive from Halifax to cape breton Island going through road 19 to cabot trail to meat cove, then back to pleasant bay, stay the night.
then the next day go to east side of cabot trail to 105 to 215 to 22 to the Fortess of Louisburg, we are planning to get up really early, so hopefully we get to see some sunrise on the east side of CAbot Trail?? maybe?
then after the fort, we will go back and get around the south side of cabot trail, then back to stay at baddeck.
is that enough time? I will be there sept 26-27th, will the fall color be great then?
I was thinking of going initially oct 2 - 11th, but then realize 9-14 is the celtic festival, I really do not want to go there when there are that many people... but I still want to go when the fall color is great.. will this second choice going to be ok? as well?
also even if I go oct 2nd I will be cape breton around 3-4th and then go somewhere else, will it just be very crowded in cape breton area or throughout island it will be crowded?
My mother, sister, and I are traveling to Nova Scotia at the end of May. We are flying in and out of Halifax and it is important for my sister to spend one day on P.E.I. (an Anne fan). Besides that we have no set plans. Does anyone have any suggestions for an automobile tour of the province? Any specific hotel or B&B recommendations? Any towns we should definitely not miss? Thanks!
What would be a good trip for 6 days. I think we would spend the first night in Halifax. The next day drive to Lunenburg but stay in Anapolis Royal. We would like to spend at least three days in Cape Breton. Does this sound reasonable. If so where should we stay in each night. We like to see the local sites, walking, etc.
Hi,
I'm coming to Canada with my girlfriend in late April and need some itinerary advice. We're spending 10 - 14 days on the Niagara-Quebec city axis (visiting the major cities) and we're left with 7-10 days for NS before flying home from Montreal. So I'm wondering how to see the best of NS. I was thinking on renting a car in QC, driving north to Tadoussac, ferry across to New Brunswick and driving to Cape Breton. From there we'd drive south to Halifax and finally take an overnight train back to Montreal.
Is this reasonable? I'm thinking it's a lot of driving (specially through New Brunswick).
We definitely want to see Cape Breton and Halifax, the tidal waves at Bay Fundy sounds nice, but other than that we have no itinerary yet.
Given that we're staying in big cities in the first part of our Canadian tour, we'd like to drive around NS and see some nature (Cabot trail), whales perhaps (or would we be better off trying to see them from the shore in Tadoussac)?.
Hello! My wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary this Spring and we're leaning toward spending it in Nova Scotia! Neither of us has ever been there before though and I'm wondering what the best itinerary might be. We'll probably be there in mid-June.
Unfortunately, we'll probably only have 2 or 3 full days (I'm hoping for 3) to spend so, although I'd love to see the entire province, it seems like the best bet is probably to focus on a specific region and save the rest for another time.
We're planning to take the high-speed ferry (The Cat) from Portland, ME to Yarmouth and I'm wondering if we should just stick to the southwest coastal region or if it's feasible to go as far as Halifax in that amount of time.
The two possibilities I was considering are: 1) heading directly for Halifax and working our way back to Yarmouth or 2) staying in Yarmouth and doing day trips from there. We'd really like to see some of the great scenery and experience some of Nova Scotia's culture and history and it'd be great to visit larger cities like Yarmouth and Halifax but also enjoy some of the smaller towns. And we definitely want to see the Bay of Fundy.
Obviously, I'm doing my own research as well but any recommendations or suggestions are appreciated.
6 Hour Layover Posted: Tue January 20, 2009 08:26 PM UTC
I have a 6 hour layover during the day at Halifax Airport.
We did the same trip last year and got very bored.
Is there anything we can do locally (I mean in the vicinity of the airport as it is a $45 taxi ride into town)
Alternatively can anyone recommend a restaurant within 10 min ride where we can have a long relaxing lunch before we continue on our journey.
My Wife and I are planning our much awaited trip to Nova Scotia in September and have recently gotten a GPS and was wondering if anyone has any good NS POI Sites or any POI to share. We love to plan have been really "WOWed" at all the wonderful History, Scenery, Great Food, and of Course the Warm and Friendly people<G>.
Also, we love to take pictures so anything or anyplace that ya'll enjoy or have found would be great.
The name Aspotogan Peninsula came up recently when I was researching the history of hooked rugs. It seems they are building a museum there for the craft of rug hooking. Did you know that it was the fishermen of Nova Scotia who first started the craft using worn out sails for their backing fabric? I'd like to get a location for the peninsula and the museum, if anyone has info. Thanks in advance.
This question is about the most efficient way to travel to Cape Breton Island by automobile. My son has moved to the island and I would like him to have his car.
From the research I've done today, it seems that I could save time by taking a ferry from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia rather than driving the entire way.
I would greatly appreciate other considerations or advice you may have. Thanks very much in advance!
arriving 23 sep08 for 8 hr visit on princess ship; are there car rental agencies within walking; would like a cheap car for circle tour to bay for the big tide. Suggestions?
airport cars too far..30 min?? any cheap public way to get to airport if no cars avail at pier? many thx
My husband and I will be making our first visit to Nova Scotia in early September. We'll take the CAT from Bar Harbor, ME to Yarmouth and return to Portland, ME on the CAT six days later - so we need to make a big loop. We'll have our own car.
We'd like to see as much as possible without spending hours driving. It's already clear that we'll have to return another time or two to see all that'd we'd like to see. We like to meander and would rather spend time in a few really great places than rush from place-to-place. We'd like to avoid large tour groups. With the amount of time we have available, it seems like we ought to limit our trip to the western half of the province and save Cape Breton for another time.
We're in our 50's. We like moderate hikes, historical attractions, beaches, nature, the ocean, music, good restaurants. We'd like to stay in B&Bs and would love to stay more than one night in the same place if possible, but are open to staying someplace different each night. Can you suggest some nice B&Bs and a relaxed itinerary for us from Yarmouth and back in 6 days? Many thanks for your help!
This may not be the best place to post this question, but I'm out of ideas. I'm on a cruise in Oct that stops in Halifax, Saint John, Boston and Martha's Vineyard. People on my cruise blog want to know which stop should have the best colors. My travels in New England have taught me that inland color is better than shore areas, but all of these stops are seaside. Has anyone visited these places during fall, or have an opinion to offer?
I'm thinking of going to visit a friend in St Johns, Newfoundland in November, but from Scotland I will have to change flights in Halifax. So I was wondering if it might even be worth stopping in Halifax for a couple of days either on the way out or way home?
Is there much to do/see in Halifax at this time of year? And is flying really the only way to get from there to St Johns? Would it take a very long time (or be very expensive) to go by bus/car/train/ferry?
Hi
For late October, I'm curious if there are still flowers to see in the Halifax Gardens? Also, I saw on the website about a hurricane, is there much damage still? I love gardens, and flowers, so this definitely peeks my interest, but we only have a day in Halifax, so I want to see as much as possible.
Hi :)
Next week we are finally going to NS (from Florida)! YAY!
Every once in a while I see something about the HST--is it refundable? I have read yes and no. Where do I get forms? Do you think they have some on the CAT?
Where is a good place to stop b/w Yarmouth and Lunenburg? Any advice you can give is most welcome. This is such a great forum!
Thanks!
I am interested in exploring Cape Breton Island, and wanted to ask these very basic questions:
a) What is the best time(s) of year to check out Cape Breton?
b) What is the most optimal number of days to allot for exploring the Island (to get a decent fill of what it has to offer)? For example, could I get a good grasp of what the island has to offer in an extended weekend (4-day) trip, or should it be a minimum of one week, etc.?
c) What in your opinion are the not-to-be-missed places on the Island?
My cruise ship will stop at Sydney on Sept. 2 and will be there from 8 am to 5 pm. I intend to rent a car. How best should I spend the time? Going up the coast toward Ingonish or driving toward Baddeck?.
Going to Lunenburg next week. First time to visit Nova Scotia. We're thinking a whale watching cruise would be nice. Please let me know if you've done this and what you thought. Feedback on the particular tour providers would also be appreciated. Thank You!
We are staying at the Marriott Harborfront in Halifax next week and would love a couple of ideas for places that are within walking distance for lunch and dinner. We really prefer casual dining and don't need anything fancy. Does anyone have any ideas? I think this Marriott used to go by another name (something with Casino in it)? We are joining a tour after that and will get lots of help with the official sightseeing but if there's any dining, shopping or just a local "must see" that we shouldn't miss in that area, we have some time on our own and would love to hear about it. Thanks in advance.
I'm planning to travel to Newfoundland in August and will take the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth. I should arrive in Yarmouth at around 2pm and then will take the ferry from North Sydney the next day. Can anyone recommend a hotel/b&b en route? I'm completely unfamiliar with Nova Scotia and so I'm not sure where the ideal place to stop would be. Any recommendations on the best route to take would be helpful too. Thanks!
