We have to be in Flagstaff, AZ on business in early December and I would LOVE to continue on to Zion and Bryce or a few days. What can we expect the week of December 7th? Is it usually snowy? Icy? Too cold?
We live in New England so it's not a trip we can just take on a whim (we have skiied in the Salt Lake area but that is an easy reach by air, unlike southern Utah).
We are traveling to Ogden with the possibility of moving there. Looking for suggestions to get the feel of Ogden proper and surrounding communities.
We don't want to contact a realtor yet, but are interested in checking out cool neighborhoods with older homes (no McMansions).
Also, we would like any tips on local arts, live music, health food stores, funky shops off the beaten path and locations for nature hikes. Vegetarian friendly places would also be great.
Moab Stay Posted: Fri October 9, 2009 02:49 AM UTC
I think I have finally narrowed our vacation down to Moab. I will be traveling with a 17yo and an 8yo. Has anyone stayed at the Hampton Inn? We will be spending most of our time outside and will be exhausted at the end of the day. . I am just looking for super comfortable beds! And quiet.
Also, is there some kind of a fitness center that you know of where I could sign up the 8yo for an indoor pool? We will be visiting in April and I think it will be a little chilly for the outdoor pools.
thank you for your help
I am planning on visiting Las Vegas for 6 days and spend 3 days exploring the above-mentioned attractions. I am not planning on any heavy duty hiking, but one-hour trail walks may be in the itinerary. Here is my plan:
Day 1 - Leave Las Vegas at 7:30 am. Reach Zion National Park by 10:00 am. Enjoy the park until about 2:00 pm. Leave to go to Bryce Canyons. Reach Bryce by 4:00 pm. Enjoy rest of the day at the Park.
Day 2 - 7:00 am visit the park. Stay there until about 10:00 am. The either leave to see Zion National Park (if our visit the day before left us unsatisfied) or go directly to South Rim, Grand Canyons. It is approximately 5 hours to South Rim from Bryce Canyons. So we reach there by about 4:00 pm (including lunch break). Enjoy the south rim. Stay overnight.
Day 3 - 7:00 am go back to park. Enjoy until about 2:00 pm. Leave to go to Las Vegas. Reach by 7:00 pm.
What I wonder is is this too ambitious? I know that each of these places deserve at least a week of our time to thoroughly enjoy them. Unfortunately due to time restrictions, I do not have the luxury. Based on my past visits to these parks (25 years ago), I though my time would be best spent at Bryce and Grand Canyons compared to Zion.
We (myself, my wife, and two kids .... 19 and 21) have one day in Bryce. We plan getting up for the sunset, what else is a must see? I know there are many.

9-mile Canyon Posted: Fri August 7, 2009 04:59 PM UTC
Hi all,
Has anyone taken the graded road from Myton through 9-mile canyon to Wellington and Price lately ? If so, is it passable for a normal 2 wheel drive car ? Just asking 'cos it would save me driving all the way from Vernal round to Price and driving in and out by the same road.
We're traveling through Salt Lake City for a 2 night stay on return trip from Jackson, WY. August 9-11th.
Have been looking at several hotels including Sky Harbor Suites, 1876 W. North Temple.
Anybody familiar with this hotel/apt. complex?
We would prefer being close to sightseeing, including Temple. Any other suggestions?
I'm driving from Bryce to Colorado wine country (Grand Junction-area) sometime in August. I'm going to do the drive straight, probably with a break for lunch (and maybe a little hike/walk around). I'm debating between going the more direct route up US-89 to I-70, which is about 5 hours, and the more scenic route down route 12 through Escalante and Capitol Reef, which would take about 7 hours. Which one should I do? I'm doing this as part of a cross-country road trip over the course of a little more than a week, so I'm inclined against adding time in the car unless the scenic route is truly much more spectacular than the direct route. Is US-89 to I-70 a nice drive? Is it worth taking route 12 and adding the extra 1.5-2 hours?
If we do take the scenic route, should we hook off left on route 24 at Torrey to go by Sand Creek, or should we take a right on 24 to go past Fruita and then hit I-70 just before Green River?
In between flights, we will have approximately 4 hours available in SLC. Is it possible to take a cab into town and do some sightseeing and return to the airport? Any suugestions would be most appreciated.
OK, my boyfriend and I are starting to plan a trip: Utah at the end of August. We're planning to be there about a week.
Here's the plan so far: Fly in to Grand Junction and rent a car, drive to Moab, camp/hike in Canyonlands and Arches, other than that... who knows? Rugged wilderness abounds! Maybe Glen Canyon? Could we make it over to the western part of the state to see Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion and?
Other things we're interested in: Ancient Native American ruins & pictographs, hot springs, caves. We love anyplace that's good for a photo op, a quick swim, spectacular scenery, or a rewarding hike.
Any suggestions on itinerary or can't miss features?
Hi there,
My son & his family will be passing two days in St. George, Utah. Is there anything interesting place they should not miss not seeing in Utah? They will be going next to Colorado, Denver..thanks.
My husband and I are interested in kayaking Lake Powell. We have never kayaked before so I was wondering if anyone has tried learning there and were there any canyons that make it a good trip. Or is this a bad idea?
My family and I are planning to go from SLC to Yellowstone park next Jan, driving by I-15N and US-20 reaching West Yellowstone MT entrance. Then our plan is drive to Rapid City, crossing Yellowstone Park and then US-26/18 ecc... According to climate conditions, is it a good route? or I will face many closures?
We want to take our famiy to Zions this year. We have never been there (I think this is a sin... living in Salt Lake for so many years!) We are looking for some trails we can take our 6 & 8 year olds on. Any ideas? We also have older children but I think we can find plenty for them to do! Any suggestions? Thanks!!!
I would like to visit the Grand Canyon from St George but I will only have one day to spend. Having never been to the Grand Canyon before I am hoping that someone could give me some advice about how to use the time.
After looking at maps, I think that I could drive to the Grand Canyon Lodge and then drive back the same day. I assume that there would be a good view at this location.
I want to take my 9-yr-old grandson on a meandering trip to visit both Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon, in no particular order. Would appreciate advice on two issues: the best and least challenging/scary route (and possible stops) for someone who doesn't want to drive more than approximately 4 hours/day; and, suggestions on a combination of activities over 3 days at Zion that will give my grandson a great experience without demanding every ounce of energy and stamina I have. We will travel the last two weeks of June. I would also love to hear from anyone else making a similar trip with an only child.
A question for the avid scenic photographers! My family has made reservations at the View Hotel in Monument Valley for next week. I have been looking at all the guided tours and now need to make a choice, however I need a little help. Since we'll be arriving around 10am and staying only one night, we'll have to select an afternoon 1/2 day jeep tour. WHICH IS BETTER? The regular Monument Valley 1/2 day tour or the Mystery Valley 1/2 day tour? They give you a choice for around $80 but as a photographer interested in rock formations and sand dunes etc not ruins or weaving etc, which valley should I select? I don't need to spend a lot of time 'setting up' for my photos, just a quick minute to adjust for settings etc (no tripod). Thanks!
I've been looking over the MV website and see that there are quite a few tour companies offering guided tours (1/2 day is what we want) through the valley. We prefer a vehicle tour over the horseback and hiking tours. Can anyone recommend one company over the other? We'll be driving in from the Grand Canyon and arriving around noon (in april), and we'll be staying at the new View Hotel. We'd like to take either a later afternoon tour or a early morning tour, and want to include the interesting sites such as the Ear of the Wind (?) and other arches etc. We're looking for the "Best Value" tours for 2 adults 1 18yr old?
How long does is take to drive the 17 mile loop in Monument Valley? Does anyone know the cost of the Jeep tours and how long they take? If a person has two hours to spend there, would they be able to see much?
We will be driving from Grand Canyon to Mesa Verde one day in mid June. We were thinking of stopping at Monument Valley. How long does it take to drive from Highway 160 (south of Kayenta)to the visitor's center at Monument Valley? Can you see much from there? We probably won't have time to take the jeep tour. I don't know if our rental van would do well on the dirt roads or not? To get to Mesa Verde from Monument Valley, we would need to go back south to Kayenta and go east on 160 correct?
I think I've now got my travel itinery fairly well planned but I'm still undecided about one of my days. I'm going to visit Monument valley (and hopefully catch sunset) and spend the night at Mexican Hat so that the next morning I can visit Goosenecks. I'm also wondering whether to include a trip to Muley Point. I've read that the views there are stunning. Is this correct? Am I right in thinking that I have to go up the Moki Dugway to get there? How difficult is this drive? I'll be there at end of March, is the road affected by the weather at this time of year? I'll have a small hire car.
After Muley Point I'll be driving to Page for an overnight stay at Lake Powell so if I drive from Mexican Hat (via goosenecks) to Muley Point, then on to Page does anyone know how long this will take me and does it sound like a good way to spend the day?
My wife and I Plan on flying to las vegas in September and want to take a shuttle bus to St. George. Could you tell me what the schedule to and from St. George is, can we board the bus at the airport, how long the trip is, and of course, what is the cost? Please e-mail replies to happydazze@aol.com
