We will be visiting Deadwood and surrounding area for about four days in September. Can anyone suggest hotels in this area and things to do? In Deadwood, we would like to stay at a casino. Thanks

My family (2 adults, a teen and preteen) will be in SD 8/10-8/20 and we're doing last minute planning. Ideally we'd like to combine camping with cabin stays, but we won't be bringing our camping gear on the plane, so we're looking for just the right cabin or cabins. Unfortunately, we haven't been having much success with Googling for a cabin. We'd really like to be somewhat away from other houses and cabins and noise. (It's not that we're anti-social, it's just that we live in a big city and look forward to peace and quiet on vacation.) So the cabin should be relatively isolated, near water if possible, views would be great, on or adjacent to enough land to walk or bike through, un-modern facility and oh yes, reasonable price. What I keep finding is lodges with a few dozen cabins, or camps with a bunch of cabins, big expensive 4 or 5 bedroom Sturgis rentals, etc, We'd love it if someone could recommend either a particular cabin (best) or at least some means of finding something closer to what we're looking for. Thanks.
Rob
Hi,
We are still planning our frequently delayed cross-country drive. I understand that the trip between Sioux Falls and Rapid City SD is looong and boooring. We are not on a timetable and would like some info about interesting(if any)minor detours along this leg of our trip. We are NOT campers, hikers, fishermen, or the usual outdoors type. Please see our home page, or check my previous posting on this forum for more details about our preferences. We will be taking the northern route first.
Thanks, Irv
Searching the Internet, I noticed that Deadwood is a casino town. Booking a room in a hotel in Las Vegas is quite anonymous, so no problem when not gambling, but what about booking a room in a small historic Deadwood hotel? Are you supposed to gamble when staying in a casino -hotel such as the Bullock hotel or the Franklin hotel?
We've done Utah-very pretty; actually awesome. Love Colorado. Looking for something different-really want to see Yellowstone-would like to see Mount Rushmore. 17 year-old daughter is stuck in car with parents, but loves to read. Husband used to night shift. Will be driving at night from Texas. What else should we see? How would you do it?
We are planning our first trip to South Dakota for the September 2009 timeframe. Our plan is to fly into Denver, drive up through Wyoming (making stops along the way) and then head to the Mount Rushmore area. After pouring through our AAA guides, AAA maps, and National Park Books, we have a pretty good idea of what National Parks we want to go to. We are thinking of staying in the Mount Rushmore area for 3 days (1 day trip to Devil's Tower/Deadwood/Sturgis and 1 day trip out to Wall (Wall Drug of course), Minuteman Missile, and Badlands and the third day check out Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, etc. We are trying to get a feel if we should stay there 3 days or 4. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
hi there, thinking of a holiday in south dakota, and looking for ideas on a good base from where we can travel around and do ,mt rushmore and all the tourist things.we love to do the tourist thing during the days, and then take in some live entertainment in the evenings with good food and have fun.
cheers in advance (will i need a car?). jimmy.
would anyone of you like to go to Mount Rushmore on July 3rd and July 4th for the Independence Day celebrations?
I will be on a Greyhound trip through the US. Since bus service between Sioux Falls and Rapid City as well as public transportation around Rapid City is very rare, I will rent a car in Sioux Falls on the morning of July 3rd and drive over to Mount Rushmore.
If anyone wants to join me going west on July 3rd and/or going east on July 4th, then please let me know...
My son and I will be having a vacation in Rapid City. We would like to take a trip to Hill City to catch the 1880 train but there does not seem to be any public transport to Hill City from Rapid City. We do not drive so the only way I can see to get to Hill City would be by taxi cab. Approximately how much would it cost to get a taxi cab from Rapid City to Hill City and how long would the journey take. We will catch the 1880 train from Hill City to Keystone one way and then from there we will need a taxi to the airport at Rapid City so we need to know approximate times. If anyone knows how I could do this then that would be helpful.
Is it possible to cross the river from Vermillion to get into Nebraska (Haskell, Newcastle, rte. 12)? I can't tell from my map if there is a bridge there.
We are long retired, fairly well-travelled, and are finally ready to take our long-delayed tour of the parts of the U.S. we've never visited. Part of our 8000 mile, 5-6 week trip will take us from Mt. Rushmore to Minneapolis MN. I'm familiar with VT tips as I have read & written many over the years, but I still need help in discovering interesting stops in and between these 2 cities. You can check my homepage for our preferences and/or check our posting in the United States forum for our preliminary itinerary. We will be traveling the southernmost states first.
We are a family scattered from CA to NY to MD. What suggestions would you have for flights from NYC to Black Hills area? Or from LA to Rapid City? It seems Minneapolis is a good connector for the eastern families. Or is there a better connector location? Some families could fly part way and then rent a car.
Has anyone had experience with this?
Hi there,
Planning my trip in summer 2008 - I intend to fly in to Nebraska, and have a driving trip.
1. How far is it to drive to Mount Rushmore from Lincoln, Nebraska?
2. When is the best time to visit Mount Rushmore?
3. Which is the best spot for photos of Mount Rushmore?
4. Is it worthwhile to stay until evening to watch the illumination?
5. Where are other places worthwhile stopping by?
How difficult a climb is the Presidential Walk? It looks like there is some sort of handicapped access, but I would prefer to walk it if possible. Thanks.
I plan on dropping into the Wounded Knee Museum in Wall, before making my way to the Badlands National Park. How much time would people suggest I put aside for visiting the park. I'm very interested in it and want to see as much as possible.
Ideally, I'd then keep moving towards Wounded Knee to see the memorial/cemetary.
I'm staying in Hot Springs, so it would be a huge round trip, starting early in the morning.
Could anyone tell me about the crime in Sioux Falls, and do you feel safe walking the city alone at night or in the daytime for that matter? What about stray dogs (pit bulls to be exact)? I heard that their was a youth that was bitten by a stray pit bull just the other day there. I cannot walk here where I live because of this problem being so out of control. What would you say is the best zip code to live in Sioux Falls to raise a family?
Anyone know what companies have apartments downtown Sioux Falls for rent? I'm interested in a 2 or 3 bedroom. I couldn't find a lot of information that covers the downtown area.
Okay, I know some of you are going to think I am crazy, but my husband and I are planning a trip. We want to visit Utah (Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, etc.), Wyoming (Yellowstone and Teton), and South Dakota (Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse). We are flying from VA to either UT or SD. We will drive from one to the other two and then fly back home from where we finish. Is it crazy to try to do this in 10 days? We know that we may miss some things, but is it enough to see the major sights?
Last year on our way to Sturgis we stayed at a place in Buffalo SD...this was a family owned motel. It featured rooms as well as a double wide mobile for latger groups. You had to drive over a cattle grate to get to it and the pronghorns were damm near in the back yard. We really enjoyed our night there and would like to return...trouble is we cant remember the name of the place to call ahead and book...any locals who can help out out there???????????
I am so interested in the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family during their stay in DeSmet from 1879-1928. I would love to visit, but financially, I just cannot at this time.
Are there any pictures of Ingalls artifacts (their furniture, clothing, sewing projects, schoolwork, etc) available through any Laura websites? I have scoured the internet and just cannot get enough of the Ingalls family. Please help!!!
Ok thanks for the replies.
Well we are planning to go to Mount Rushmore. When you ask Well we plan on goinngt the week before X-Mas. We are driving from California. I was also thinking of checking out the Grand Canyon. Not to mention we will be bringing two small dogs. I will be driving an 04 Tacoma with a shell. We are going to North dakota anyways so I wanted to through in the extra stops. My Danish girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the States in June 2007 and we would love to spend some time with a 'local'. :-)
Our plan is to fly into Chicago then spend around three weeks traveling through Illinois, Iowa, South & North Dakota and Minnesota to see some of what we consider to be the real America.
I am 31, UK/NZ dual national and my girlfriend is 30 and 100% Danish. We are a cool, laid back couple who have traveled quite a bit and love meeting people from all over. We currently live and work in Copenhagen, Denmark.
If any of you good people at VT would be kind enough to offer a sofa/bed/whatever to crash on for a couple of nights we'd really appreciate it! Alternatively if you would like to catch up and swap some travel stories we'd be keen to meet you. Perhaps even arrange a little VT meet?
Of all the reviews I've read, of all the people I've spoken with, you are the only who has ever stated this. Would you please expand on Why one shouldn't go downtown at night?
Where to camp? Posted: Mon February 27, 2006 03:34 PM UTC
Our family will be coming to S.D. for the first time in mid June.We were thinking of staying in either Sylvan lake campground or Stockade lake north campground any comments about these campgrounds or others in the area would be greatly appreciated
We'll be driving though South Dakota in early May - does anyone know what time is sun-up/sun-down? We're just trying to get an idea of how many hours daylight we'll have.
Many thanks
