Presently bringing a motorcoach tour to RC in the spring. had a lot of requests to shop for Black Hills gold. Probably stupid question but is there a place, with many vendors, possible snack bar etc. where the women can shop without just going to one store? Thanks

Mount Rushmore National Memorial Posted: Tue July 19, 2011 07:11 PM UTC
We are travelling from the UK to see Mount Rushmore this September and from there would like to travel the Custer State Park wildlife loop and the Peter Norbeck scenic route and it seems that these might be the same route as I can't seem to find out exactly where they run and whether it's possible to do all of this in one day. If any one has any information they think could help us we would be grateful.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial Posted: Fri June 24, 2011 05:42 AM UTC
I have been exploring various travel options during the July 4 long weekend. One of the idea is to travel to Mount Rushmore. Plan is to start day 1 afternoon and stay in a location inbetween like sioux falls (approx: 240 miles). Then travel the rest next day and see Mount Rushmore in the evening of day 2. Visit again day 3 morning and then spend time in seeing other attractions like Crazy horse etc till day 3 afternoon and stay travelling 250+ miles towards minneapolis to return back on day. Questions I have is, how will the traffic in this route, any travel tips and attractions outside President's memorial. I also travelling with 2 kids aged 6 and 2.5 and attractions suiting them will be of greathelp.

Deadwood Posted: Sat March 5, 2011 11:08 PM UTC
One of the sites to see in a visit to Deadwood is the forested mountain just
outside of Deadwood. On this mountain are the graves of famous historical
figures and on top a unique rock formation called Whiterocks. There was
a road to the top in the mid 1990s. Is that road still there?

We are traveling in an RV from Lincoln to Mount Rushmore. We would like to make a one night stop on the way, any ideas where to overnight? We have two children ages 6 and 10. We want to stay 2-3 nights in the Mount Rushmore area for sight seeing, so more ideas as to where to stay and what to see are needed. We then want to spend one night somewhere between Mount Rushmore and Freeman -more ideas needed. Freeman is located near the Iowa border by Sioux City. Lastly, is there anything interesting to see in Sioux Falls?
Any input would be totally appreciated. Thank you!

We have an anniversary coming up at the end of October. My hubby has always wanted to see Mt. Rushmore and Devils Tower. We would be renting a car. So what kind of road conditions can we expect? Would September be better? We sure don't want to drive in Ice or snow.

We are planning on going to the buffalo roundup in Sept. Does anyone know if the campgrounds are packed full during the roundup? We would like to stay at Center Lake campground but, if I understand correctly, you can't make reservations ahead of time at Center Lake campground. Is that correct?

Any info on the roundup and camping would be appreciated. Thanks.

We will be 3 days/ 4 nights in RC SD. Looking particularly for good photo sites. Obiously Rushmore, what else is on the must see list? What is the best tour route through the area (Custer, etc)? Looks like lots of choices.

Me and my soon-to-be-new-husband will be roadtripping in late August, and we'll be stopping by the black hills area.

We are not sure if we should spend one or two whole days in black hills (we'll be arriving in late afternoon one day and leaving early morning the day)?

Pretty much the stuff we want to do are:

Mount Rushmore

Custer state park

Some gold mine place (which one?)

Some cave (I'm thinking Jewel Cave)

And do you think the following are worth it?

storybook island

dinosaur park

journey museum

museum of woodcarving

thunderhead falls

reptile gardens

bear country usa

cosmos

four mile ghost town

crazy horse memorial

We haven't booked our accomodation yet, but probably will be in Custer or Hill City

My son's FIL made camping reservations at a Oreville campground near the park. I am having a dickens of a time finding a link to be able to make another reservation near them. I was invited, but was not sure I could go until after he made the reservation.

We are staying for two nights in a camping cabin the Game Lodge area. The only other area open for the other two nights of our stay is in either in the Game Lodge area or the South Stockade area. I cannot find any pictures of the South Stockade area. Has anyone stayed at this campground? What is it like and would you recommend it over the Game Lodge area? It will be myself, my husband, and our 9 year old daughters. Thanks.

My family (2 adults, a teen and preteen) will be in SD 8/10-8/20 and we're doing last minute planning. Ideally we'd like to combine camping with cabin stays, but we won't be bringing our camping gear on the plane, so we're looking for just the right cabin or cabins. Unfortunately, we haven't been having much success with Googling for a cabin. We'd really like to be somewhat away from other houses and cabins and noise. (It's not that we're anti-social, it's just that we live in a big city and look forward to peace and quiet on vacation.) So the cabin should be relatively isolated, near water if possible, views would be great, on or adjacent to enough land to walk or bike through, un-modern facility and oh yes, reasonable price. What I keep finding is lodges with a few dozen cabins, or camps with a bunch of cabins, big expensive 4 or 5 bedroom Sturgis rentals, etc, We'd love it if someone could recommend either a particular cabin (best) or at least some means of finding something closer to what we're looking for. Thanks.

Hi,
We are still planning our frequently delayed cross-country drive. I understand that the trip between Sioux Falls and Rapid City SD is looong and boooring. We are not on a timetable and would like some info about interesting(if any)minor detours along this leg of our trip. We are NOT campers, hikers, fishermen, or the usual outdoors type. Please see our home page, or check my previous posting on this forum for more details about our preferences. We will be taking the northern route first.
Thanks, Irv

Searching the Internet, I noticed that Deadwood is a casino town. Booking a room in a hotel in Las Vegas is quite anonymous, so no problem when not gambling, but what about booking a room in a small historic Deadwood hotel? Are you supposed to gamble when staying in a casino -hotel such as the Bullock hotel or the Franklin hotel?

We've done Utah-very pretty; actually awesome. Love Colorado. Looking for something different-really want to see Yellowstone-would like to see Mount Rushmore. 17 year-old daughter is stuck in car with parents, but loves to read. Husband used to night shift. Will be driving at night from Texas. What else should we see? How would you do it?

Good Day Everyone,

We are planning our first trip to South Dakota for the September 2009 timeframe. Our plan is to fly into Denver, drive up through Wyoming (making stops along the way) and then head to the Mount Rushmore area. After pouring through our AAA guides, AAA maps, and National Park Books, we have a pretty good idea of what National Parks we want to go to. We are thinking of staying in the Mount Rushmore area for 3 days (1 day trip to Devil's Tower/Deadwood/Sturgis and 1 day trip out to Wall (Wall Drug of course), Minuteman Missile, and Badlands and the third day check out Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, etc. We are trying to get a feel if we should stay there 3 days or 4. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

would anyone of you like to go to Mount Rushmore on July 3rd and July 4th for the Independence Day celebrations?

I will be on a Greyhound trip through the US. Since bus service between Sioux Falls and Rapid City as well as public transportation around Rapid City is very rare, I will rent a car in Sioux Falls on the morning of July 3rd and drive over to Mount Rushmore.

If anyone wants to join me going west on July 3rd and/or going east on July 4th, then please let me know...

Thanks,
Jens

My son and I will be having a vacation in Rapid City. We would like to take a trip to Hill City to catch the 1880 train but there does not seem to be any public transport to Hill City from Rapid City. We do not drive so the only way I can see to get to Hill City would be by taxi cab. Approximately how much would it cost to get a taxi cab from Rapid City to Hill City and how long would the journey take. We will catch the 1880 train from Hill City to Keystone one way and then from there we will need a taxi to the airport at Rapid City so we need to know approximate times. If anyone knows how I could do this then that would be helpful.

We are long retired, fairly well-travelled, and are finally ready to take our long-delayed tour of the parts of the U.S. we've never visited. Part of our 8000 mile, 5-6 week trip will take us from Mt. Rushmore to Minneapolis MN. I'm familiar with VT tips as I have read & written many over the years, but I still need help in discovering interesting stops in and between these 2 cities. You can check my homepage for our preferences and/or check our posting in the United States forum for our preliminary itinerary. We will be traveling the southernmost states first.

We are a family scattered from CA to NY to MD. What suggestions would you have for flights from NYC to Black Hills area? Or from LA to Rapid City? It seems Minneapolis is a good connector for the eastern families. Or is there a better connector location? Some families could fly part way and then rent a car.
Has anyone had experience with this?
