Helsinki Helsinki in December
Posted: Thu June 25, 2009 02:03 AM UTC
We are heading over to Europe for Christmas and the New Year and my 5 year old daughter wants to see snow at Christmas......will there be snow in Helsinki or surrounding regions? Also do the Finnish REALLY celebrate Christmas with all the lights and trimmings? We live in Australia and I would love the kids to experience a Northern Hemsisphere Christmas, I am open to all and any suggestions, we have from approximately 20th - 26th December before flying onto Nice. Thanks!!

Hello!

I will be flying in and out of Helsinki this August. On my way back home I would like to spend some time in the city.

Should I stay 1 or 2 days there? While I'm there, what would you recommend I see?

Thanks in advance!

Lappi Ivalo
Posted: Wed June 10, 2009 06:40 AM UTC
Hello,

I might be in Ivalo/Inari this summer for a summer camp. I was wondering - since I'll be that far north, would it be a good idea to visit Nordkapp or northern Norway? Does anyone know what the approximate travel expenses would be for that?

I would appreciate your help!

Helsinki Best "natural landscape" Route to take in Finland in summer?

Best "natural landscape" Route to take in Finland in summer?

I'm not sure if I should explore the interior of Finland on my trip to Scandanavia this summer. I know Finland is a flat country, and I'm a landscape photographer. I know there are lakes, and forests, but Finland distances are great, and my time in the country is limited to 3-4 weeks, and I want to know Helsinki well. My question is what can I expect to find If I go hitchiking, exploring the heart of Finland?

What route should I take that will lead me back to Umeo, or Stockholm, Sweden (my next destination after Finland)? I've heard the archipelego around Turku is the nicest area of the country. I don't have time, resources to go all the way to Lapland, but I heard for example rt. 62 around Pumaala is the nicest area of the country for photography, nature, and untouched wildernesss.

What do you think?

Helsinki 12 hours in Helsinki---what shall I do?
Posted: Sun June 7, 2009 10:36 PM UTC
I am using frequent flyer miles for my summer travel to Europe. The only day that I could leave Rome is July 28th at approximately 7pm. I arrive in Helsinki after midnight! While I have found some hostels with 24 hour reception, I am mainly concerned about getting there. Is there a bus, tram or train from the airport at that time of night??? I have tried looking at the airport's website and the time schedules are not clear to me.

Also, I will have some time to explore the city the following morning. Any must see suggestions?

Help!

Thanks in advance,
Revlynn

Helsinki An Afternoon in Helsinki
Posted: Fri May 29, 2009 08:11 PM UTC
My daughter and I will be flying into Helsinki on 2 June and arrive at approximately 9am, our next flight does not leave until the mid-evening hours, so we hoped it might be possible to meet for lunch at a restaurant or cafe within reasonable distance from the airport. We are unfamiliar with the city, so any suggestions would be very welcome even if the member won't be able to attend. Anybody care to meet up?

Helsinki Ferryboat connections to Estonia in the east part of Finland?
Posted: Mon May 11, 2009 02:02 PM UTC
Hi.

This summer i am coming in Finland, flying round trip from Helsinki, i have 11 days

I am going to vist south Finland and north-center Estonia.

Now it's time to design an itinerary: we are only 2 so we aren't going to rent a car, so we'll move with bus or train.
Is possible to reach to east part of Estonia by ferryboat from Finland or i have to do the route Helsinki-Tallin 2 times ?

-Do you know the weighth limits that finnair has in factured luggage and hand luggage?
-My flight lands at 18.45 and the train leaves at 20.12 from the train station,do you think there is enough time to get to the train station?
-Do you know any better(cheaper) way to get there?
Thanks a lot!

Finland 10 days camping in Finland
Posted: Tue April 28, 2009 05:33 AM UTC
Hello Finland!

My fiance and I are soon going to head off on a 10-day road trip around Finland, camping along the way. From about 16th to 24th or 25th of May.

Questions:

1. Would any VT-ers like to meet up along the way? I haven't made a route plan yet, so if you fancy meeting up I will add you to the map :) My fiance is determined to watch Eurovision in a hotel or bar somewhere - maybe that could be a good opportunity to meet up :)

2. Do any VT-ers know good places to camp near to them (in southern Finland, mostly on the east side) or even have their own place (e.g. field) where they would let us camp for a night? Bear-free camping sites with facilities are also interesting :)

3. It's a long time since I camped in Finland. Are bears a problem for campers? Should I pack anything like pepper spray? :) Or would a car fire extuinguisher be enough to scare off any marauding wildlife? :)

At the moment we want to include Porvoo, Helsinki, Serena aquapark x 2, probably Savonlinna, Lappeenranta... any other ideas?

I've been to Finland a lot - I like chilling out in the countryside, but I suspect my fiance can only handle so much forest :))) So any interesting/unusual places would be great to know!

Finland A Mökki for less than a week
Posted: Mon April 27, 2009 09:25 AM UTC
Hi all,

I hope someone here might be able to help me. We'll be in Finland in summer (July/August) and would love to spend 2 or 3 nights somewhere by the lake, preferably in a "Mökki" and not at all in a tent. Unfortunately all rental offices only rent houses if you stay a minimum of 7 nights. However, as we will turn nuts after 3 days in the wilderness and as we don't have that much time a week is not an option for us. Does anybody have a tip for us how we can still include the "Mökki Experience" into our road trip?

Kiitoksia paljon!

Helsinki Memorials in Helsinki?
Posted: Thu April 23, 2009 05:30 PM UTC
Hello all
I am visiting Helsinki in a few weeks and i was thinking about whether or not there might be some memorials to The Winter War of 1939-40 in Helsinki?
Would it fair to assume there aren't any monuments or memorials to The Continuation War 1941-44?
I understand there are a couple of museums worth visiting in the city which deal with these historical subjects but i'm interested in seeing memorials/monuments in or around Helsinki which deal with this sometimes sensitive subject.

If anyone can advise i would be most grateful

Dear all
I will be visiting Finland in June for 6 days. I would like to know the following-
-Places to visit/things to do in Helsinki
-Distance between Helsinki & Rovaniemi and the average cost of travel between the places by train
-Places to visit/things to do in Rovaniemi.
I have heard that it is best to visit Laplands during winters. Since i would be travelling on a tight budget would it be advisable to travel all the way to Rovaniemi from Helsinki during summers?
Also, any itenary suggestions or any other places that i can visit in Finland keeping in mind that i cant spend too much !

Thanks !

Helsinki Finnish or Russian train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg
Posted: Tue April 21, 2009 02:10 AM UTC
The cost of Finnish train in comparison to bus is so much more expensive.

Aparently there is a Finnish train and a Russian train that leaves Helsinki to St. Petersburg. Is the Russian train less expensive and where is the site to purchase tickets? I would imagine the Russian train would have more culture. Does the train stop anywhere along the way and can one get off to take photos? Is English spoken and does one bring one's own food on board?

What is the cost?

Thanks

Helsinki Train from Petersburg
Posted: Sun April 12, 2009 02:28 AM UTC
I haven't been able to obtain accurate information about trains from Petersburg to Helsinki. I will be going on June 24. Is departure from the Finland station or Ladozhsky?

It seems that there are no overnight trains, and trains leave at either 7:15 or 16:30 (not counting Tolstoy). How long is the trip? I have seen travel times ranging from 5 hours to 6.5.

Finland Scenic Train rides in Finland
Posted: Fri March 27, 2009 02:17 PM UTC
hi,

going to Finland next week and will be using InterRail nat.pass. I would like to know which are the best train rides, with better landscape. I alreday know that Eastern part is great, but still, I dont know which line to do...

Anyone can give any ideas? Specially if you could include some travel tips I might be interested into or if you could tell what points of interest are in that line, so I know where to choose from.

Just spare me touristic trains and nostalgic lines, please. They dont take InterRail and are overpriced and views are not the best sometimes, and I like to travel by train for the landscape not the choo-choo's...

Thanks!
