we will be in Gallup end of september, midweek, i understand there is a good cafe within the cultral centre, is this a good place for a light lunch, any other suggestions would be gratefully recieved, thanks
I just bought tickets for the Antonito to Osier rountrip. Should I have chosen Chama round trip instead? My husband is a train-a-holic. Which is more scenic? I heard the railyard in Chama was cool.
I will be in albuquerque next week for two nights on my way to ca. Ineed to know of a really clean hotel in old town.I would like to keep it at around 125.00 a night.I am driving from tn. i was going to fly this week, but with the flu scare i canceled(and lost) my tickets,so my money is a little tight. And what do you think of the train ride into Santa fe the next day. Would it be to rushed or should i just do around in ALB- Thanks.
Hi there - looks like our sweet rental won't be ready for us to move into until about 10 days after we arrive in Albuquerque. We're working downtown and looking for a reasonable hotel/motel that is pet friendly in the downtown/mid town area - any suggestions? Thanks!
Planning a 7 day visit mid Aug 2009. My wife and I are looking forward to a relaxing vacation with some exploring and photo ops. We are in our 50's and flying into Albuquerque from New York. Would like to avoid big city hassels like traffic jams, noise and the hustle & bustle. We have not been to Santa Fe before. Are there hotels available inside the city limits that are quiet and laid back, or would the suburbs/outskirts have what we're looking for? Wouldn't mind B&B or smaller hacienda. Thanks!
I was in Albuquerque last week to check out the area and found a rental house located North of Lomas, East of Louisiana, West of Pennsylvania and just south of the Jerry Cline Park. The house itself is in great shape, owners seem nice enough... the neighborhood appears older with some nice and some not so nice on the same street and the adjacent streets - any advice about that area? Thanks for your help!
We are all traveling to New Mexico for Dad's 80th and want to celebrate with dinner out while staying near Taos. There will be 11 of us. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks
I am travelling to Chaco in April and wonder if I need to rent an SUV or will a economy car have enough clearance. We will take the long road from the south instead of going all the way around and in from the north.
thanks so much
Now before anyone goes harping on me about not seraching for similar posts, I did search and didn't find anything that quite satisfied me!! That said, I was wondering what weather to expect for mid-February in NM. Albuquerque, Santa Fe, down to Carlsbad, White Sands, Roswell. I've been checking the weather networks online frequently and it seems like it's warm during the day (15C - don't know Farenheit). Should we anticipate snow in the towns? I'm expecting snow up at high altitudes (e.g. Sandia Peak). How about driving conditions? We're also driving to Gallup and into Arizona - how about these roads? Thanks!
Walking safety Posted: Wed January 14, 2009 02:30 AM UTC
Hi All, I will be staying at a hotel on Central Avenue east of Broadway and was thinking of walking to the Convention Center (about a 15 minute walk). Would this be safe for a lone woman? This would be during the day. I ask because I've read there are some sketchy areas in downtown. Alternatively, I could take the bus to 2nd Street and walk from there.
Iwant to take the wife and 2 teens to a mountain cabin for a week or so. We would like to do some hiking, fishing, shopping and maybe some horseback riding and whitewater as well. We prefer accomodations off the beaten path, and would rather spend our $$ on activities than on luxurious lodging. Anybody have any suggestions? I was thinking about the region West of Cimarron, near Taos.
We have 9 days for a road trip starting in El Paso and heading North thru New Mexico! We are flying out of Albuquerque and want to see as much of NM as possible, including Taos. We cannot wait to experience New Mexico!
We'd love suggestions on a route, and what to see along the way. We want to experience small towns, local cafes, fun places to stay (not too expensive), art galleries/local artists, festivals/celebrations, amazing scenery (Petroglyphs) and hikes...
Any suggestions/tips are welcome!
Thank you so much! :)

I am thinking of taking my 16yo daughter, and 67 year old mother on a trip someplace warm over the winter. It is just going to be a weekend getaway as my daughter is in school. Here are our varied requirements:
* I like the outdoors...really want to go to the southwest. Love national parks.
* Highs at least in the 60s
* my daughter likes the glitz of the big city...I need to include some excitement for her
* my mother can't walk too much, so I'm thinking road trip
Howdy folks! I've been offline most of this year it seems, but I'm missing my VT buddies! So, anyone have ideas for a VT meet in New Mexico sometime this year?
Some ideas we've bandied about in the past:
Balloon Fiesta
Gathering of Nations
Roswell Alien Festival
or just plain lunch or dinner!
What say you? Anyone have thoughts to shar? Is there interest? Or shall I just call Ray and make him meet me for lunch?
Scenic Drives? Posted: Tue November 4, 2008 05:02 AM UTC
Hello everyone,
I'm wondering what the drive from Roswell to Albuquerque is like, scenery-wise. I'm planning on visiting Roswell, Carlsbad, and White Sands, but I'm flying out of Albuquerque. The other option I was considering was driving from Carlsbad through Texas past Guadalupe Mountains NP, stopping for a couple hours, and getting to Albuquerque via interstate 25 (not necessarily all in one day).
I will be in Albuquerque, nov 3, 2008 for at least 4 days maybe more. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on a quiet motel, that was reasonable. I am not a high roller , but like it clean and quiet, If i could get a deal I would stay longer but it seems the online deal makers are all in the same range. I wanted to go to the peak/ tram. I have to go to santa fe on nov 3, 2003 after that I thought I would dive back to alb, and stay there- open to all ideas- have info on cebu, bohol, camigiun philippines, china, and shenzen- glad to help -bye all,
I would be in Roswell next weekend [ 18 October ] and be attending a seminar for one whole month until 14 November 2008. I am a Malaysian and would be staying at the Best Western Sally Port Inn during the one month period.
Was informed that Roswell have about 24 VT members but effort to reach some, have been negative in reply.
Would like any VT members to get in touch so we can meet and have some quality social meeting.
I can be reach at this address or ivan9220@yahoo.com.
Hi,
Just wanted to know how far and time taken between roswell to tucson ? Is there a sort of a greyhound bus going to tucson in the morning and one getting back to roswell by late evening ? Thanks. ... Ivan
Hi, I was just thinking if there are any VT members in Roswell, New Mexico . Well, I would be attending a one-month training programme in Roswell and staying at a local inn in Roswell, New Mexico. As the saying goes, the best way to see and cover a lot of interesting places is being accompanied by a good friend.
So, any VT members in roswell out there, I would love to meet you. BTW, I am a 53 years old, law enforcement officer from Malaysia and love travelling.
Hi again! :-)
I'm thinking of doing my Albuquerque --> Albuquerque loop (mentioned in my previous post here) starting with Gallup & Canyon de Chelly rather than with Santa Fe & Taos, which I would then see on my way back to Albuquerque... This is to try and avoid reaching certain places during a week-end...
But I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out how long each portion of the trip could take me - for instance, how many days driving from Albuquerque to Grand Canyon via Gallup & Canyon de Chelly (I would be in Gallup on a saturday for the 'flea market' but probably would rather spend the night somewhere else...)...
Any idea?
Thanks!
Cécile
Dear all,
My family (2 adults and our 10 year old son) will be flying to Albuquerque on Oct 31st (8pm arrival), renting a car and going back home from El Paso on Nov 4th (1pm).
The time of our visit is so short, and there are so many wonderful things to do/see - I do not know what to choose!
I think we must see the Carlsbad Caverns, but other than that I have no clue what to choose!?!
Can we even attempt going north of Albuquerque(in either direction) or is it too much driving?
Cities would be our last priority, and I would like to visit some Indian Culture sites. Unfortunately Aztec Ruins, Chaco and Gila Cliff Dwellings all seem to be far away.
What would you suggest?
Thank you very much in advance,
Olga
Hi all!
I'll be arriving in Albuquerque on Sept. 26 and then heading for Mesa Verde (Colorado) probably via Santa Fe and Taos, then off to Grand Canyon via...? Four Courners? Monument Valley? (not sure yet, so much to see everywhere, and I'm very interested in American Indian cultures...)... I have to make a loop and will be returning the car & flying back on Oct. 10...
So my main question would be: would it be ok to bring a small tent and camp rather than to rely on hotels/motels? Would the weather still permit it in the more elevated areas? Also, are the campgrounds generally safe for a woman traveling on her own? Any specific one to recommend? Would it be necessary to reserve in advance, or do you think I could get away with just showing up at that time of year? I know this Hot Air Balloon thing will be on when I get back to Albuquerque, so what would be a good area to stay the night before I fly back?
Also, I wanted to know whether any of you had ever given tandem skydiving a try? There's drop off zones both in New Mexico and Arizona, and it's a bit hard to decide from here (given I can afford it!!)... Besides, with everything I want to see (the pueblos, etc.), I'm not sure I want to go too far out of my way to try (although I like the idea of taking the challenge...)...
Any recommendation?
Thanks!!
Weather/Road conditions last week of November
Posted: Sat August 30, 2008 06:24 PM CEST
Hi,
We (4 adults) have planned a round trip (in a rented car) according to a route that you can check out the Google Map Link below. Unfortunately this trip has been delayed to the last week of November. Could anyone please give us some advice on what we have to expect of weather-/driving conditions in some of these areas, and if we ought to skip some of the destinations - or maybe find a completely different destination altogether. This is going to be our first trip to (and in) USA, and we would of course like to bring home to Norway the best of "memories" from your country :) THANK YOU!
I want to go on a road trip to New Mexico, to explore the Native American Heritage (I'm an amateur anthropologist of sorts). I want to see the living tribes in action, and stop off at a lot of the ruins and archaeological sites. What is the best way to go about doing that?
We're two couples from Norway who intend to experience the Southwest United States. We'll fly into San Francisco and drive to Albuquerque; we estimate to use about 7 to 9 days on the trip. Would appreciate any suggestions to get the most out of this journey.
