Boone Secluded Cabins in or around Boone
Posted: Thu July 10, 2008 02:36 PM UTC
My husband and I planning to spend Christmas in Boone this year. We want to stay in a secluded/private mountain cabin. I have been looking on the internet and there are so many. Wanted to know if there is anyone out there that would recommend a cabin or rental company.

Thanks

Charlotte hotel near convention center
Posted: Wed July 2, 2008 12:01 AM UTC
Want to visit Charlote, N.C. for an event at the convention center Aug 14-15. Looking for an inexpensive hotel with parking within reasonable walking/driving distance or along the trolly route. Don't want to stay in the Hilton- won't be in the room that much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance-

What year did Carowinds open? I believe I went there the first year it was open or
just about finished. I'm guessing in 1972 or 1973?

North Carolina Can I Smoke
Posted: Fri May 2, 2008 10:57 AM UTC
I will be visiting N C in the next week, and as I am persicuted at home in England for smoking, what's the attitude to somoking in NC (bars / restaurants etc). Also I have looked at the Grove Park Inn, Ashville, all the reviews sound good, how long would it take me to drive from Atlanta to Ashville?

Many Thanks,
Michael

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Best place to stay to visit Great Smoky NAtional PArk
Posted: Wed April 16, 2008 05:04 PM UTC
It's time to plan our summer 2009 family reunion. Our grown kids are all outdoor people who love hiking and water sports. We'd like to be near the Great Smoky National Park. Do you suggest staying in NC or Tenn? I found many lovely rental vacation homes in Maggie Valley, NC. Is that convenient for the park? We don't want to drive an hour each time we go into the park.
Thank you in advance for your responses.

I will be staying in Charlotte April 4 for 3 nights.
I will be renting a car for one day only and the other 2 days I won't have one.
What is a good neighbourhood to stay in that is "foot" friendly...i like to walk around and see things.
Or can someone recommend a good neighbourhood to stay in?

Asheville Asheville: vegan friendly?
Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 02:23 AM UTC
Hi all!
I'm a vegan from New Zealand and am traveling to NC with my mother later this year, spedning most of our time in Asheville. I have never been to the USA, let alone a smaller city in the south and was wondering how vegan-friendly it is likely to be? I've heard a lot of sterotypes about Southern cooking and its use of animal products. I'm particularly worried about the prevalance of animal fats used for cooking. Is this likely to be an issue and can anyone recommend any good vegetarian/vegan restaurants?
Thanks heaps! :)

North Carolina East Coast Roadtrip: Outer Banks in May
Posted: Wed February 27, 2008 08:22 PM UTC
Hi and thanks for reading.

I'm considering a road trip up the Atlantic Coast from Tampa to NYC and would like to visit the Outer Banks, since I've never been.
Researching a little, driving its length seems out because of the ferry situation. However, I would like to park the car and take the ferry over just for a while, then back and continue north.
Questions:
I prefer isolated beaches. Would it be better to take the ferry in the town of Atlantic over to the barrier island or keep driving to Cedar Island and take the vehicle ferry?
Would it be worth it at all to do the above, or would I be satisfied with the more accessible beaches further north, probably starting with Nags Head, since I'll be driving there anyway?

Thanks in advance.

North Carolina Outer Banks

Are there any decent oceanfront hotels that will allow a six pound shih tzu? I keep reading conflicting reviews and would welcome the advice of a fellow vt'er. Something in the $120-$250 a night range would be great. Thanks, Dave

North Carolina Gatlinburg, Smoky Mountain National Park, Cherokee & Asheville
Posted: Sat February 9, 2008 08:08 PM UTC
At the beginning of April I will be traveling from Atlanta to Gatlinburg. From there I will be driving through the mountains to Cherokee and then Asheville.

I am writing this because I could use any tips, suggestions, must visit places (preferably free or cheap due to a tight budget), restaurants to eat at while we are traveling, anything that you think might help us out! We love nature and love to see new things (that will be a major part of this trip). As much as I love hiking I don't think we will have much time to do a lot of that on this trip. We do however plan to go on a few short hikes to see waterfalls! Any tips are helpful though!! Here is some more info on the trip:

-We will be making a day out of driving from Atlanta to Gatlinburg, TN (We will be driving down to Cade's Cove Loop on the way there and plan to walk around Gatlinburg and check out some of the stores in the area maybe Pigeon Forge too).

-The next day we will Drive from Gatlinburg to Asheville, NC. We plan to drive the Cherokee Orchard Road and Roaring Fork then hit 441 into the National Park. We will be making stops along the way to see the beautiful scenery. When we get over to Cherokee we are planning to spend some time there but not sure what we will actually be doing yet. Then we are going to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway for a little bit until we get to Maggie Valley. From here we will get off BRP and take the most direct route to Asheville.

- Then we will be spending a few days/nights in Asheville (not sure what all we will be doing there yet either)

Charlotte Visiting Charlotte in March
Posted: Tue February 5, 2008 01:45 PM UTC
My husband will be headed to Charlotte in March for a business trip (entire week) and I was considering tagging along, but am curious as to what there is to see/visit in Charlotte. I know it's got a lot of southern charm, but what can I do all day while he is in meetings? I am 52, not really into shopping but do enjoy museums, concerts, local history. Also, what is the weather like in mid-March? I appreciate your input. Thank you.

Charlotte Charlotte to Dallas, Texas
Posted: Sun February 3, 2008 09:31 PM UTC
Would be grateful if any locals or fellow travellers could recommend various forms of transport between Charlotte NC and Dallas Tx. Timescale is not important, price is more so, but so is safety!
Train seems complicated, i.e via New Orleans, San Antonio etc.
Are Greyhounds generally considered safe?
Thanks

North Carolina things to do?
Posted: Wed January 9, 2008 01:16 PM UTC
I've booked a flight to the Triad Intl Airport, and arrive on Feb 15th - 18th with my boyfriend. It's for a Valentine's gift, and it's all a surprise, but I'll have to have get everything all planned out before.
One problem - I booked the flight on a whim, and don't know anything about the area. I haven't booked a place to stay, as I don't even know where's the best part to stay. I know we won't want to drive for anything like 3 hours orso to get to anywhere, as that kinda sounds like it's too far. . ..please can someone help me :( ?
It'd be kinda neat to do some of the wineries, and I figured that could be a hlaf day, and then of course I heard that Winston-Salem is pretty, and historic, so I figured that could be the other half day.. .. . so then I've still got 2 days. I know he'd love to do something in the mountains, or something outdoors, or something active, as we're sorta hyper people that way, but I haven't got a clue. I looked up ice climbing (like a half day course), but that's offered in Asheville, and I saw Mt. Airy/that area doesn't look too far, but I can't seem to find companies/things to do!
Please, please, please, can someone help?

Charlotte Charlotte in November
Posted: Wed October 31, 2007 02:23 PM UTC
Will be coming to Charlotte in early November and want to know about the weather. I looked on the weather sites and it says it's going to be rather "brisk." Temps only getting in the mid 40's?? I guess I will need my winter coat. I did live in NC many years ago on the coast though and have never been to the "other side" of the state. Any places that are a must see? We will be staying in the Hickory area. I understand that is about an hour north of Charlotte. Looking for fabric stores too. Thanks for any suggestions.
