I'm planning a summer trip to Glacier Park and just made reservations at a couple of park lodges (most of the view rooms are already taken.) Now I have to figure out how to get there. What's the best airport to fly into (from SFO)? It looks like the Kalispell airport is the closest, but I can get a direct flight to Spokane. That looks like a 7 or 8 hour drive, which I don't mind if it's pretty. I would rather spend my time driving through mountains than sitting around an airport waiting for a connection.
How is the drive from Spokane? What's the best route? Google sends me on I90 almost all the way to Missoula, but I'll spend the extra time to drive a back road if it's scenic. Any recommended motels or restaurants along the way?
I'll be taking three days (Sept 1 -3)to go from Lake Louise to Yellowstone, driving the G-to the Sun Road. I see two routes: Through Banff and Calgary towards the East entrance, or through Kootenay to Whitefish. I know I have to get to the east, towards Yellowstone, my next stop.
QUESTIONS:
1. Is there a big difference taking Going-to-the-Sun Road E to W, or W to E?
2. Are there places to stay nearby the St. Mary's entrance? After a long day, we wanted to stay a night before entering the park, but I can find no motels listed anywhere in nearby towns. Are there any- preferably inexpensive?
3. If we enter the park on the east side, would we double back, or go around Route 2 to get towards Yellowstone? Is there another route to consider?

Hello,

Hi, despite all my research in books/sites I'm having hard time deciding on which to go.
Details:
- will go for 7 days around late Aug. or early Sept.
- just wife and I, in our 30's, intermediate hikers/backpackers.
- would like to do at least one 3 day back country trip, and the others would be full-day dawn to dusk type hikes. preferably in a loop as we wont have a 2nd car to shuttle us.
- into awe-inspiring mountains, rivers/lakes, lush greenery and trees, and prefer narrow winding trails versus big flat ones in a valley.
- wildlife is a plus, but not the main goal.
I'll be flying in on the 29th to work at the Yellowstone National Park on the 30th. I'm looking for a buddy who would like to split cab fair with me to the Blue Sky motel located right down the street from the Greyhound Station. Please get back to me if this works for you. I'm going to try and be in around 6:30PM but there is a possibility of arriving at 11:30PM.
We're staying in Billings for two nights in the autumn before heading to a ranch for a few weeks, never even been in America before! Anyway, any nice bars, clubs, equestrian shops that people would recommend? Or anything else cool and random! Thanks :) Joanne
I am planning to stay at Gardiner 3-4 days. I want to go to Hayden Valley and North Entrance. Are they far apart? What will be a best place to stay few days to cover these places? What are the must see places in Yellow Stone? Is Grand Teton National Park a must see place after we see Yellow Stone?
Matt
I am planning to go to Yellow s-Stone from Los Angles with family on the first week of August. I will drive to Salt Lake and then to Montana (Grant) since it's the shortest route per some one. Do you agree with this?
I don't know where to stay. Some people suggest stay in different parts few days.
Also I want a place that has kitchen if possible and close to park. This way we can cook break fast and few dinners.
I can change the route if anyone suggests a better way. I don’t have a clue where to stay. I appreciate any suggestions and comments.
i'm planning a trip for a friend and i to meet in montana (half way point between us) and i'm looking for good hotels with theme rooms available hopefully at decent rates, any suggestions?
Planning a vacation to Montana in Sept. I have a list of ghost towns I want to photography, then off to Yellowstone. The ghost towns are Elkhorn, Comet, Wicks, Mammoth, Pony, Laurin, Alder, Virginia City, Nevada City, Garnet, Bannack, Coolidge.
I heard the road to Garnet can be a whiteknuckler coming from Drummond, can any one verify that.
Also I plan to do all this in about 12 days. I want to spend at least 4 days in Yellowstone. Do you think this is possible? Also any other ghost towns you would include in the trip? Thanks
Sorry but dumb question from the Southern hemisphere here. Is there a Glacier National Park in Canada and another in the USA? I am half planning a Can/US trip in September and am keen to visit what everyone says is a beautiful place but I am getting confused as to where it actually is.
Hi, I'm trying to plan my first trip to Glacier NP, and I'm discouraged by reading how crowded it is in summer. Sometimes can't find parking, people with bear bells and noisy, etc. before the summer season though, it says some of the raods and trails are closed due to snow. So, is it worth going in summer anyway? I've always wanted to see this wonderful sounding place, but I'm wary. Any advice? Thanks!
My buddy and I will be in Big Sky skiing from March 5 through March 8, but wish to go snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park for a day. Looking anyone who would like to join us to reduce cost. I'd like to rent snowmobiles in West Yellowstone, but understand that to go into the Park, you need a guide. Most tours go to either Old Faithful, or the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, but not both. To do both, this can only be accomplished by having a guide. Guide cost $400 alone, plus rental cost of sleds and cloting. Looking for anyone who may be interested in joining us to form a group to do the Yellowstone Loop which includes the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and Old Faithful, and reduce the cost per person for the gudie. Back in the 80's I was able to simply rent a sled and was free to ride where I wanted in the Park. These days, laws have changed and you need a guide if you want to do the loop. If interested, please let me know and we'll see what we can work out.
Is Glacier Nat'l Park worth seeing in early May for a day or 2? Traditionally I would assume there is still to much snow to do much around there. Where's the nearest place to stay the first week of May? Any info would be great.
If anybody needs a ride from Salt Lake City, UT to West Yellowstone, MT - driving there this Friday morning Jan 9th and back on Saturday night Jan 10th or Sunday morning Jan 11th - then please feel free to contact me. I will have a rental car and wouldn't mind some company for the long drive. :-)
When is the best time for snow conditions and sun for skiing Big Sky. Would like to plan first visit and wondering when is the best time to go based upon good weather, and great snow. Thanks.

I will be traveling with my aged yellow lab to Glacier, Waterton, and maybe up to Banff in early/mid-September. Don't want to leave him overnight so will probably do day hikes. Any advice or suggestions on dog-friendly accomodations or day-baording.
I have heard about a music concert the is in Bozeman called Rock the River?
Aug 8,9.10. please forward additional information... location, cost, any additional info. Thank you!!!!
I'm going to be leaving Glacier Nat'l Park and heading to Helena, MT. I'd like to take Hwy. 83 on the west side of the Rockies because I'm thinking the scenery will be beautiful. I will be driving a Chevy Astro and pulling a small travel trailer. Is this road a white knuckle drive that I won't be able to enjoy, or is it just a scenic drive worth taking?
A friend of mine told me about a really cool hike that begins with a ferry across a lake, then a hike past several glacial lakes and ending at a glacier. I can't find anything like that on the maps of Glacier Nat'l Park. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If not, could anyone point me to a hike that would get me to a glacier in the park?

A friend and myself are considering a ranch holiday in Montana, and are looking for some recommendations for ranches to visit. We have found one ranch on the web which caught our attention (Dryhead Ranch - formerly Schively Ranch), and I'm wondering whether anyone here has maybe been there and can tell me something about their stay there?
I am travelling to Vancouver for 2 weeks in July and was planning on crossing the border into the USA for four days en route to Calgary.
I have already scheduled a stop over in Leavenworth (WA) and was planning a further 3 days in Montana to break up the journey.
looking at the map, Missoula, Billings and Great Falls would seem to be the best points to stop over.
I was wondering if these would be the best places to stop, are they safe? and are they attractive cities? and what is there of interest in these locations?
if not i would welcome any advice of where to visit and other places to stop over between Vancouver and Calgary.
