Kathmandu Itinerary for Kathmandu???
Posted: Tue September 5, 2006 01:11 AM UTC
Can anyone suggest an appropriate itinerary for 4 full days in Kathmandu? There seems to be so much to choose from that it’s staggering!!

I will be travelling in from China and Tibet and will be seeing LOTS of monasteries so would prefer to see something different but still true to the Nepalese culture. Here is what my tour does on its last days. It doesn’t say that we necessarily do these things but it’s a start as to what I’ll be doing. I’m counting my 4 days from day 28 of my tour.

Many thanks in advance!!

"Days 27-28 Kathmandu (taken from Intrepid trip notes)
It's only a short drive to Kathmandu where we have the rest of the day to explore.

Kathmandu is an awesome mixture of legend and modern development with a rich artistic and cultural heritage. Narrow lanes lead to small squares and courtyards where ornate carved balconies overlook shrines and temples. Buzzing markets and bazaars are the centre of Nepali life, where stalls and small hole-in-the-wall shops sell everything from bangles to Buddhas to beetroot. Kathmandu has been a travellers' centre for many years, and this is reflected in the international flavour of the bright lights and 'Coca Cola culture' of the central Thamel district.

Get up with the birds to climb to the Swayambhunath Temple. Situated on a hilltop, the instantly recognisable stupa with its Buddha eyes attracts a steady stream of pilgrims, and the views out over the valley are superb. Located in the heart of the Tibetan community, Bodhnath Stupa is the largest in Nepal. The surrounding area is a maze of restaurants and workshops. There is time to walk through the heart of the old city to Durbar Square, home to the palace of the Kumari Devi, who is considered to be a living goddess.

Our hotel is just a short walk from both Kathmandu's Durbar Square and from the busy shopping streets of Thamel, where we will enjoy a last night's dinner together as a fitting end to our journey across 'the roof of the world'.

As there are no activities planned for Day 28, you are free to depart at any time."

Kathmandu Kathmandu - Lhasa
Posted: Tue July 25, 2006 03:39 PM UTC
Hey!

Essential question:

How can one get BY LAND from Kathmandu to Lhasa?

I heard either bus or rent a 4x4.

Can anyone brief me about:

1) length of the journey
2) prices
3) legal status (eg permits, etc)

of these two alternatives?

I am travelling alone (so I imagine the 4x4 will be very expensive..?)

Thank you immensely,

Luis

Think twice if you want to fly out from Kathmandu, Nepal to Varanasi,India by Cosmic Air.The airline could cancel their flight immediately without the notice, if the airline doesn't have enough passengers.

Kathmandu current situation
Posted: Wed April 12, 2006 04:52 AM UTC
Do you think it will be useful to keep a semi-permanent post on the situation in Nepal.....?? VT'ers in Nepal, who have just left Nepal and who are coming into Nepal can contribute.....

Those of us who are in Nepal at the moment, can post updates...

What do you all think?

A current update is that....

There is talk of no curfew today, but there is a mass rally by the seven parties in Kathmandu at 1300 hrs, to mourn the four people who have died during the clashes in the past five days all over the country.

So far the curfew has not been announced, though there was a night time curfew from 2300 to 0400 this morning....this is a good sign....

Pokhara has a day time curfew (0800 - 0600hrs) and so has Chitwan....

There are no unrests direct in the trekking areas....travel by road is not recommended at the moment due to the hassle and the chances of reaching into town to a recently announced curfew...

Hello to everybody,

Ill be in Kathmandu around summer, Im already thirsty for informations - but I have no guidebook yet.
So maybe some of you could tell me:

1. where to find some nice guesthouses in a convenient location (close to Durbar square/Pashupatinath or Swayambunath - or Patan, Bakthapur maybe)?

2. Im still building on my private Olymp of gods and godess, so Im looking for some nice woodwork of Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha and friends. Are there some special markets you could recommend for nice woodwork and carvings Nepal is famous for?

Kathmandu Monastery guest house or cheap hotel near Swayambhu?
Posted: Thu February 16, 2006 01:04 AM UTC
Namaste!
My friend and I will be staying in KTM late May-early June(my second trip there, his first) and we are wondering if there are accomodations available at monasteries or nunneries or cheap guest houses. We would like to do daily early morning kora around Swayambhu stupa so does anyone know of accomodations close by? Is the Chhetrapati area convenient to Swayambhu? I know about the Hotel Vajra but it is a bit pricey for us. During my first trip I stayed at the Lotus Guest House in Boudha-very basic but cheap and quiet.

Thank you so very much -Karma Bhutan,Harirasik,Adshah, rabcab, saagar,Gillian, and skyline for your extremely helpful replies to my queries. I have studied all you Nepal VT pages over and over again , and now have much more understanding about what I want to do and see, and also realise that the time I will spend there is nothing like long enough to even scratch the surface, nevertheless I am looking forward tremendously to getting there.
Can anyone tell me what sort of weather to expect in mid March and what sort of clothes I should take, and also rough cost of lunch/dinner?
Thanks again for all you kind peoples help.
Kind regards

Kathmandu Tibetan Refugee Camps - Trying to bring in medical supplies - Is this safe?
Posted: Sun December 4, 2005 03:11 PM UTC
We are planning on bringing medical supplies - such as asprin, tetracycline, vitamins, etc. for the Tibetan refugees around Kathmandu. After reading the travel advisories, we have concerns about saftey. Are there any legal issues we should be aware of? Specifically about bringing medicine into Nepal. Any help or information about other useful websites, postings, or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

Kathmandu Sabine Grüneklee is missing in Kathmandu
Posted: Sun October 30, 2005 08:23 AM UTC
Hello,

I´m looking for my sister Sabine Grüneklee (international spelling is
GRUENEKLEE) who is missing since 16th October 2005. She's 31 years old,
1,68 m (5.51 ft.), skinny, has green eyes and ties her brown hair to a
pony tail. During her holiday in Nepal she stayed a longer period in
Kathmandu. The last time she has been seen in the Blue Horizon Hotel,
Thamel. There she's been noticed departing with a small backpack to
propably start a day trip round Kathmandu. But she has never come back.
That is very untypical for her, especially since she was supposed to meet
her boyfriend at the airport of Kathmandu on the 18th October.
Unfortunately she has never shown up there.
We are very worried. If you know anything about her, about her current
situation or if you have seen her since 16. October 2005 please let me
know. Below's a picture of my sister and another of her backpack.

For further informations (a picture and another of her backpack - or german, spain and french version): http://www.hasenfus.com/sabine/
