Buying a good down sleeping bag in Kathmandu Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 02:59 PM UTC
Hi - Is good quality down sleeping bags available for purchase in Kathmandu? If yes, what kind of price should I be looking at? Any recommendations of shops? I would rather buy it there and not haul it all the way from the US

Getting from Tribhuvan Airport to hotel in Thamel Posted: Tue September 1, 2009 06:43 AM UTC
Hi,
Is there a prepaid taxi service outside the international terminal to hotels in Thamel? I've already booked my hotel.
I want to avoid the hassle of fighting off taxi drivers trying to get you to go to their hotels for a commission.
If there is such a service? How does it work? Where is it? How much would it costs?

Is it cheaper to buy Flight Tickets from Kathmandu? Posted: Sat August 22, 2009 09:09 PM UTC
Dear all,
My friend and I (Indonesians) are planning to travel overland from Beijing to Kathmandu in Oct 2009, then we will depart as I'm going to Delhi and my friend is going back to Jakarta. The problem is both of us can't find cheap flight tickets online. KTM-Singapore the cheapest is USD 500 one way. And KTM-Delhi the cheapest is USD 200 one way.
My questions:
- are those prices normal?
- is it cheaper to buy the tickets when we arrive to Kathmandu? (we have 3 days to spend there)
- do you know how much are the prices?
- any recommended travel agents to buy flight tickets in Kathmandu?
Thank you very much! Your answer is much appreciated.

Unrest in Nepal Posted: Mon May 4, 2009 04:56 PM UTC
Saw news about the Army Chief being sacked and now the Nepal PM has resigned. I wanted to get some local perspective as to how the travel situation is. Our trek for EBC starts in a week and we will be arriving into Kathmandu in about 6 day. Wondering if this issue is mostly administrative (and not spilled over to the streets) and are there any safety concerns?
thanks.

Travel partner Annapurna trek May Posted: Mon April 20, 2009 05:28 AM UTC
I'm a Dutch traveler (28) heading to Kathmandu around the 28th of April. I want to start the Annapurna trek in the first week of May and hoping to find pleasant companionship. I'm in good shape but have never done such a big trek.
I'd like to take it slow -not that I'm a slow walker - but enjoy the beautiful scenery and great people. It's not a expedition but all about having a great time and going with the flow, see what comes on your path and not having a fixed schedule.
Therefor a tracking group doesn't seem to be my style. Any advice on what the best way is to get in contact with fellow hikers in Kathmandu? Can I still expect enough people on the trek in May? Any other tips I ought to be aware of for tracking around this time of the year?
Question on the side.. I have very comfertable hiking shoes but they are not water proof. Any experience or recommendations?
I'm getting very excited as everybody is raving about Nepal.
Wish you all good travels.

Visa at the airport in Kathmandu Posted: Fri March 6, 2009 07:46 PM UTC
Has anyone gotten the Nepali Visa at the airport in Kathmandu recently? As a US citizen, I know I require a Visa which I can obtain here in the US itself by mailing my passport in and so on. However, if it's quite simple and smooth (no long lines or hassles) to obtain the visa at the airport upon arrival then I will be inclined to do that rather.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
ms

Buying/renting trekking gear Posted: Tue November 25, 2008 11:05 AM UTC
I am doing the base camp Everest trek as part of my round the world trip and as I am going on to some very hot countries, im planning to ditch the majority of my trekking gear.
Can anyone reccommend somewhere where I can buy or rent things like a coat, fleece, walking poles and sleeping bag? And more importantly, how much will they cost?
Also if I do buy instead of renting, is there maybe a charity or somewhere worthwhile I could give my gear to?

Kathmandu to Tibet Overland! Posted: Wed November 19, 2008 05:17 PM UTC
Hello people!
I am travelling from Kathmandu to Tibet on the 20th Dec [I may reach Kathmandu earlier]; I am getting some help and advice from a friend in the UK - they have assured me that they would get the cheapest tour package for me, and I really hope they get back to me soon. I am backpacker on a tight budget travelling alone and can't afford to spend 7 days waiting for my Visa/Permit and also I can't afford to pay $800 or more to just cross into Tibet.
My plan is to take the train direct to Beijing after that just in time for New Years Eve.
If anybody is travelling in the same direction [i.e. into Tibet] please let me know, maybe we could group togheter and get this group visa and tour at a cheaper cost?
e-mail me at jeffrey_e77@yahoo.com
Cheers!
Jeffrey

Flights from Kathmandu to Bangkok Posted: Thu October 2, 2008 03:07 PM UTC
Hi Guys,
After spending hours trawling the internet I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help me find a reasonably priced route east out of Kathmandu.
It seems that only Thai airlines have a direct service on the route for about 45000NRP (330GBP). Does anyone have any experience of indirect flights, and if so what route would you recommend? I'm guess that there must be someway of going via India but can't seem to find anything at a lower cost.
By the way, my travel plans are very flexible. I don't need to fly into Bangkok - any of the ASEAN countries would do if I could travel onward from there.
Any advise much appreciated.
Thanks, Joe

Travel Safety Posted: Wed January 23, 2008 04:06 PM UTC
Hi all,
A friend and I are hoping to do a trip to Nepal & Tibet this summer, but noticed that there's a travel warning on the US Dept of State website for Nepal. Does anyone know how dangerous it really is in Kathmandu or Nepal in general? We'd really only be in Kathmandu and then on the roads to Tibet.
Thanks!

Kathmandu in December Posted: Wed October 10, 2007 07:04 AM UTC
Hi everyone.
I am planning on going to Kathmandu from Dec 25 till Jan 5.
My main interest is photography, and would definitely be interested in some trekking.
I need to know if it's a good time to travel there and how "cold" it would be... Will I need really heavy clothing?
Thank you.

Going from Kathmandu to Delhi Posted: Sun September 23, 2007 11:44 PM UTC
Hello,
I will be travelling in Tibet and Nepal around until around 10th Nov. My flight back to Amsterdam leave from Delhi but all the flight from Kathmandu to Delhi seems to be fully booked and it is very difficult to make contact with the local airlnes in Nepal and Delhi. I am getting concern about how i am going to go to Delhi I have read that by road is not so safe. Does anybody know if it is easy to find means to do that trip either by local airline or by road? Do you know of any local airlines agency i can contact.
Your feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanks and enjoy your travel
Cheers.
