| Borneo | planning a trip to borneo Posted: Wed August 17, 2005 12:28 PM UTC
Hi,
My fiance and I are thinking about going to Borneo next year and just wanted some basic tips and advice. I don't know an awful lot about the country as yet, but looking in the brochures there seems so many places to stay and so much to do that I am confused about the best way to visit this place. We would like to see as much as possible, ie all the main places of interest especially the jungles, orangutans, local villages etc..but would also like some days to relax on the beach. Would it be better to do say a 2 week pre-organised tour, with an extended stay at a beach hotel at the end, or do you think it better to book say 2-3 weeks at one hotel and then take organised trips/tours from that hotel? If you simply book 2-3 weeks at one hotel, is it possible to arrange trips to the jungle, orangutan santury etc from the hotel once you get there? Also, which resort hotels would be best to stay in to be at a central point for visiting the main attractions? We are not exceptionally fit people, just kind of average. We are fit enough to explore things, but not fit enough to go on huge walking tours or climbing up mountains!! How would this affect us? I'm worried that if we were to go on say a 2 week tour of the country it might involve alot of walking or hiking and we really don't have experience of that kind of thing! Also, what would people actually recommend to visit there, say if you had only 2 weeks? Also, which would be the best beach resort? We haven't really got a clue where to start so any help appreciated. I would definitely rather go with a tour operator on some kind of package deal rather than organise our own travel and accommodation, so any tips gratefully received! Many thanks Kelly |

| Borneo | A few days only in Borneo..worth doing? any cheapish tours? Posted: Thu August 11, 2005 05:15 AM UTC
Hello
I am considering going to Borneo in mid/end december for 3/4 days...is it worth going for such a short time and at this time of year? I'd love to go on a nature tour to see the orangutans etc but most last a lot longer time wise than I have available and are extremely expensive (well comparatively compared to the rest of asia and for my budget) Please advise if this side trip is worth while and if so ideas on tours and where to base myself would be appreciated. Thanks! Vicky |

| Borneo | expensive wildlife experience Posted: Sun July 3, 2005 08:03 AM UTC
Has anyone done a trip i Sabah to Danum VAlley and Tabin Wildlife reserve.
I want to do it because of the great chance to explore the untame jungle, but it seems to be very expensive, just two nigths at danum valleys only resort it cost 600 USD. Does anyone know of some place to stay near Danum, that charges less. |

| Borneo | Climbing Mount Kinabalu Posted: Thu April 28, 2005 12:15 PM UTC
I'm climbing Mt Kinabalu later in May and was wondering whether I'd need proper walking boots or whether stiff walking shoes would do? Also, has anyone stayed at Waras huts, do I need to take my own sleeping bag?
Thanks! |

| Borneo | Hotels in Kuching Posted: Fri March 25, 2005 04:43 PM UTC
Does anyone know where's the best place to stay in Kuching, in terms of price and location? So far, I've got Crowne Plaza and Damai Beach but not too sure of their locations. Pls advise.
Also, how easy and how long does it take to to KK from Kuching. I'd like to fly but just in case we can't book the flight in advance, what are some other options and how much do they cost? Any hotel suggestions in KK is greatly appreciated as well. thx |

| Borneo | Organized trip to Borneo Posted: Mon February 7, 2005 02:05 PM UTC
We plan a trip to Borneo this year. We heard of a hotel in Sarawak called Holiday Inn Damai Beach Resort...Can anyone recommend Sarawak and this hotel. Before the stay there we have a roundtrip organized, but we have no idea whether Sarawak is a good place to stay for the second week to enjoy beachlife...

| Borneo | borneo tour operators Posted: Tue January 6, 2004 04:13 PM UTC
For those who have questions about tour operators in Borneo, Borneo Adventure's (BA) highly regarded reviews should be updated (and downgraded). We sought their services based on the writeups of various guidebooks. We did not book ahead but BA had no difficulty accommodating us and other tourists who had similarly shown up without booking ahead. We were surprised by our luck given the guidebook recommendations to plan ahead but soon discovered it was the wrong kind of luck that we had followed the guidebooks' advice. The guide assigned to us had just returned from leading another tour and had had no rest. He was exhausted when we were picked up and the tour was a bust from the start. The guide barely went through the motions and the whole experience, including the actual encounter with the indigenous people (who were also simply going through the motions) screamed of "tourist trap". At the camp, we missed various activities on the itinerary because our guide got drunk. Far from being exclusive, another tour was being led by another operator at the same camp and that group was having a far superior (educational and dining) experience. In fact, several of us decided to join the discussion being conducted at the second group since our guide was nowhere to be found (after serving dinner hours late). Upon return from Borneo, we went directly to BA's main office and lodged a complaint. BA claimed they would investigate but insisted they could not corroborate our description of the tour despite our previously securing permission from other members of the group to be contacted about their experience. Obviously, we were hugely disappointed by BA's service and furious at the lack of professionalism. Evidently, they're relying on their past reputation to essentially defraud customers, especially given the considerable rates charged by BA. Thankfully, the rest of our visit to Malaysia was so enjoyable that in spite of the extremely unpleasant experience with Borneo Adventure, we remember the trip fondly.

| Borneo | Sabah or Sawawak Posted: Wed October 15, 2003 05:47 PM UTC
We're hoping to go to Borneo Aug/Sep 04-5 of us (one family)! We are great lovers of the Far East and the outdoors but not climbers or great treckers. Just want to sample the 'Real thing' but also like to indulge in the beach resorts.
Also - We usually book through a travel agent when going long-haul but wonder if it's not too difficult to arrange a holiday for 5 adults to travel from uk to KL to Borneo to Bali via the net? We have just returned from a wonderful hol, Bangkok and Koh Samui. So difficult to be back in the UK. I so wish we were back in Asia! |
