New Orleans Visiting next week
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 03:31 PM UTC
My friend and I (both female) will be in New Orleans next week(I am so excited). I have visited a number of times, but have not been back since 2004. I had a couple of questions:

1. We will be staying at the Maison Dupry. I know that it is close to Rampart street. Should we be worried about returning to the hotel at night on foot? What about leaving the hotel in the early morning?

2. I have always walked around the Garden District and into the cemetery there and felt safe during the day. Can my friend and I go into the cemetery, or should we take a tour instead?

3. I like to walk in the French Quarter after dark. If we stay above Bourbon Street, will we be safe? What about as you get closer to Esplanade?

4. Any other areas to avoid/be cautious about?

I appreciate any help. This is my friends first trip to New Orleans, and I don't want her to feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

New Orleans Need tips near by French Quarter
Posted: Sun May 4, 2008 12:21 AM UTC
I´m a travel writer and I´m going back to New Orleans after 20 years to write for my travel column. Even though I will write about Bourbon Street and other goodies; I wonder if you can give me some tips, anywhere in the quarters near by, to find something a little less crowded. Let´s say, a typical restaurant where locals who care for saving money go, bars or other places. Anything you might find interesting. I´m sure New Orleans has a lot more to offer.

New Orleans Hello New Orleans and every body!!!
Posted: Sun April 27, 2008 01:32 AM UTC
I´m visiting New Orleans for the wine and food festival taking place at the end of May (actualy, I will write about it for my travel section...newspaper) and I wonder if you can help me find the best mufaletta (italian sandwich I believe)...I have heard about the Napoleon House, but some one else told me about an old grocery store in the French Quarter....do you know?

Also, I´d appreciate any input about interesting places for my travel section...I´d like to give a hand to N.O. after all this disaster...actually, i have written a few stories to bring visitors....hugs!!!

Posted: Fri April 18, 2008 03:27 AM UTC
What about the Metairie around Galleria Boulevard and downtown Superdome area?
Are they pretty safe areas?
We're thinking of going to the 4th on the River fireworks display also.
Any comments about that area?

Baton Rouge BUS SERVICE MSY-BATON ROUGE
Posted: Sat April 12, 2008 04:43 PM UTC
How can I get to Baton Rouge after arriving at New Orleans International? I'd like to spend a few days in the city in October, hopefully attending a LSU game. I'd rather not rent a car unless it's unfeasable. Thanks.

New Orleans St Louis Cemetary - Safe to visit alone?
Posted: Sat April 12, 2008 03:14 AM UTC
Hi everyone
I am in New Orleans on holiday and hoping to go to St Louis cemetery. If possible we would like to go on our own, not as part of a tour, but have heard it can be dangerous.
Do you think it would be safe to go alone, if we went around midday?
Thanks!

New Orleans Overnight options
Posted: Wed April 9, 2008 07:35 PM UTC
Hello, we are heading through New Orleans for a day and need a place to stay. We have been camping most of the time heading across the country, but thought one night in town would be nice. We have a 4 year old in tow, so nothing too crazy or loud. Is there a nice, not too expensive place to stay in the city. Probably around the French Quarter.
Also, can anyone recommend a campsite fairly close to the city?
Or, is it better to find a cheaper hotel outside the city and visit a couple of times from there?

Louisiana Noodleing Fishing and great fun to be had?
Posted: Sat April 5, 2008 09:34 AM UTC
I will be in in the area on May 16th-19th and parts of North Texas, West Arkansas, and North Louisiana.

I was wondering if someone here goes noodleing/bare fishing/tickling in any streams or rivers in that general area and would be willing to have a companion for an afternoon enjoying the hobby and a few beers?

I would LOVE to try this form of fishing and it would be better to meet fellow VT members cause of it and my learning curve and mysterious bite count would hopefully be lower.

Please let me know. Thanks Ken.

New Orleans Jazz Fest transportation
Posted: Wed March 26, 2008 09:50 PM UTC
I'm heading to NOLA for the 2nd weekend of Jazz Fest and am wondering if anyone familiar with the area (or has done this before) can tell me what taxi fare from the central business district (St. Charles/Poydras) to the fairgrounds would cost (approximately).

The shuttle bus is $16 r/t pp but I was told that a taxi would only cost about $10 each way (this person is also known to be a slight exaggerator, so I'm unsure if this is true). There are 4 of us going and I'm thinking it might be easier and more convenient just to take a taxi. Does anyone have any insight?

I made the mistake of taking a taxi to the Voodoo Festival years ago and it took us forever to find a cab to leave. I don't really want to spend my time trying to hail a cab to get back, but also don't know that we need to spend $70 to get back and forth on the bus. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks VTers!

New Orleans French Quarter Hotels/Motels with FREE Parking and Access to My Bicycle
Posted: Tue March 11, 2008 02:21 AM UTC
So far, after reading some posts here, I've seen only Le Richelieu Hotel (1234 Chartres) that offers FREE parking for its customers. I also want to have access to my bicycle (which I carry along on all out-of-town trips) and hope to have daily access to the bike as my old knees are not so good for walking too far any more.
Do any of you good folks have some advice/tips/suggested hotels for me? I hope to stay for a few days and, if things go well, come back more often.
Thanks.

New Orleans How to I make the most of 24 hours in New Orleans?
Posted: Mon March 10, 2008 05:49 PM UTC
What to eat? Where to stay? What to do??? I don't want a waste a minute here and I want to be sure, in particular, that we get good food. We'll be travelling with two mature kids (ages 10 and 12, but they've been around the block) and I was thinking of a swamp tour? What about that Haunted French Quarter tour? I think we want to stay in the French quarter so we can walk around during the day--but where is good to stay right now? And what about that one all-important dinner we get? I know all the food is good, but if you had just one dinner, where would you go?

Any and all advice appreciated so we can take full advantage of our time there.

Thanks!

New Orleans Driving into the French Quarter
Posted: Sun March 9, 2008 02:24 PM UTC
Hello - We can't decide between staying in the French Quarter, without a rental car since the parking is so expensive, or if we should stay outside the area & drive in for a few days. If we end up picking a hotel outside of the heart of New Orleans, say in Metairie, how difficult is it to drive into the French Quarter for site seeing? Or if we stay in the French Quarter is it easy enough to get to attractions that we can't walk to. We are staying for 6 nights & don't want to run out of things to do if we don't have a car. Thanks for your help!

Are there designated stops for the streetcars or can you catch them and get off anywhere on the route? If there are designated stops, how do I find out where they are located?

New Orleans Advice on transportation needed
Posted: Fri March 7, 2008 06:01 AM UTC
Several out of town guests will be staying at the Sheraton on Canal Street and would like to go to the Mid-City Rock and Bowl. Is there a bus (buses) that drive that route or is the only way to get there by cab? If so, what buses (transfers) would they have to take? Are the bustops in safe areas?

New Orleans safe walking / Warehouse district
Posted: Wed February 13, 2008 12:40 AM UTC
I will be staying in the Warehouse district (Embassy Suites, 300 block of Julia St.) in late March. I am traveling alone and wonder whether the surrounding blocks will be safe for walking: to/from Bourbon St, to/from nearby Harrah's casino in particular. I am aware of the general cautions about walking beyond Bourbon St at night, but am asking more specifically about my hotel and surrounding blocks.

Thanks so much for any help.

New Orleans whats REALLY happening in new orleans?
Posted: Sun February 10, 2008 10:47 PM UTC
is April a good time to visit (weather wise) ? i havent been to new orleans in two years (WAY too long!!!) and a friend of mine and i are planning to visit in April...is this a good time of year to visit? if i can get some info on how the fabourg marigny is doing, i'd appreciate it 'cause this was one o my fave places to hang out on thurs-sunday nights...i've been back to new orleans after Katrina, for jazz fest, but dont necessarily have to go during jazz fest now...i just want to go to places that are up and running well...last time i was there, so many places werent in order (like some museums and such)...

i know there are plenty of websites that i can look into, but i want to hear from locals or people who've spent some serious time there lately (not organizations that will promise you THEIR place is the best)

thanks in advance for any replies VTers!!
