My fiance's family is from the midwest: Iowa (Iowa City area) and Illinois (Aurora area/West of Chicago), and we want to have our wedding in this area, but I have no idea what is available for weddings other than churches. I want to have an outside wedding that just takes someone's breath away: beach (I know I'm not going to find this here), gardens, park, ???
Does anyone have any ideas or locations that would help me and my fiance out? We don't have a huge budget, however, so all though some areas in Chicago are beautiful I'm not sure we could afford them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I will have a visitor coming in from Cedar Rapids Iowa. I'm wondering what to feed her. Generally, as a local of Iowa, would it be meat (beef/pork), fish other seafoods, chicken for her? Bread, potato, or rice?
would anyone of you like to go to Mount Rushmore on July 3rd and July 4th for the Independence Day celebrations?
I will be on a Greyhound trip through the US. Since bus service between Sioux Falls (South Dakota, close to Iowa border) and Rapid City as well as public transportation around Rapid City is very rare, I will rent a car in Sioux Falls on the morning of July 3rd and drive over to Mount Rushmore.
If anyone wants to join me going west on July 3rd and/or going east on July 4th, then please let me know...
My husband and me would be in Iowa for about 3 months starting from May'08.
Can anyone suggest us nearby states that we can visit during our stint here. Also, how far would be Canada from here?
Does the Diamond Joe casino ever leave the dock?
Are there any casinos that go on a short cruise down the Mississippi?
We are going down to Dubuque for a day/evening from Wisconsin. And then the next day will be visiting Anamosa to see the National Motorcycle Museum.
Hi all, I'm looking for a resturant to take my family and several sisters from Mt Carmel in celebration of their 75 jubliee. The Sisters want "good fried chicken." The rest of us can make do at a resturant so we are looking to give the Sisters a real nice meal.

Is is possible to get a schedule for Fridayloo in Lincoln Park? We are thinking of making it part of our class reunion. Please email me the dates if possible. Thank you! A former Waterloo Resident
I grew up in CR. Graduated from LaSalle in 71. March 19th is St. Joseph's day and in the past there was a "red" parade which ran through Czeck Village. Do they still have the parade? Do they still hold the parade on the 19th? Do they still serve red beer? I need to come for a family visit and wanted to schedule it around the parade. Thanks, Pat
camper vans Posted: Mon January 15, 2007 10:55 PM UTC
I am planning a camping trip for this summer. I would really like to rent a camper van for 2 adults and 2 children. The thing is I am finding it really hard to find a dealership offering these for rent. Any idea?
Thanks
My Danish girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the States in June 2007 and we would love to spend some time with a 'local'. :-)
Our plan is to fly into Chicago then spend around three weeks traveling through Illinois, Iowa, South & North Dakota and Minnesota to see some of what we consider to be the real America.
I am 31, UK/NZ dual national and my girlfriend is 30 and 100% Danish. We are a cool, laid back couple who have traveled quite a bit and love meeting people from all over. We currently live and work in Copenhagen, Denmark.
If any of you good people at VT would be kind enough to offer a sofa/bed/whatever to crash on for a couple of nights we'd really appreciate it! Alternatively if you would like to catch up and swap some travel stories we'd be keen to meet you. Perhaps even arrange a little VT meet?
In late August my family and I plan to move from our home in Sacramento, CA to the Cumming area of Northern Georgia.
I'm probably one of the younger members of this forum, I'm 19. And I actually was born in Columbus, GA and lived there until I was 5. That's when we moved to California and we have lived here for the past 14 years. So basically, I am a California girl through and through. I love the culture, I love our diversity, I love our unique outlook on life.
I have mixed feelings about this move.
I'm trying to focus on the positives:
1. Closer to relatives.
2. Cheaper....everything.
3. Opportunity to "widen my horizons", learn about a new culture.
4. Fresh Start.
But, admittedly I know very little about the area or culture I am moving into and I quickly run out of "positives".
For financial reasons, I need to stay with my family right now. So I'm trying to live with the idea. I'm normally very open and excited about change and stepping outside my comfort zone, but I feel like I'm moving into the dark ages.
Here are some reasons I'm hesitant to embrace the idea, it's mainly things I've just heard from people so they probably aren't altogether true. So, I guess I'm asking for people who live there to help me disprove these or explain them so I feel better about the move.
1. Humid weather
2. Difficulty finding a job.
3. Old-fashioned and conservative culture.
4. Lack of racial/cultural diversity or unity.
5. Recreation options to entertain a college-age, city girl = none within a 45 min radius.
6. Retail options or dining-out options = less in comparison to California.
I am new to this website :-) so it is making me a little nervous. I hope to be at the right place to ask the following question...
I could use some help / suggestions with planning of a road trip (about 7 days) from Iowa to Arizona. My parents from Europe will arrive in Iowa sometime in March and plan on renting a car there. They would like to spend one week driving from Des Moines, IA to Phoenix, AZ. During their journey they would like to visit and see as many interesting places as possible - museums, parks, art, history, nature, .... anything interesting and unique to each state. Also, any advice as to where to stay (something more economical), during the 7 days on the road, would be much appreciated.
James T. Kirk Posted: Sun January 22, 2006 08:20 AM UTC
Hi,
Are there no 'Trekkies' on VT? Apparently, this is where James T. Kirk, captain of the Starship Enterprise, will be born at some time in the future (2233?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_T._Kirk
I've read somewhere that the town is already cashing in on this future and a monument has been erected beforehand. I'd love to see that. Well, seems I'll have to be the first to go there ("to boldly go where no man has gone before").
Hi everybody. I travelled through Iowa last year on a snowy December day and took this photo from the California Zephyr - does anybody know where it is?
I am a Minnesotan who is stir crazy and thinking of taking a weekend and driving down to Iowa for a mini-road trip to watch some Minor League baseball and have a few cold beers in the great outdoors.
Being from Minneapolis, all we have is DOMEBALL. As much as I love the Twins, I need to get away from the city and take in a game or 2.
Can anyone recommend the best atmosphere to watch a game from all the teams down in Iowa? I must confess I haven't been to Iowa for awhile so it would be nice to see anything else interesting while I'm there if anyone has any suggestions. Cities or small towns, I'm not particular, I'd just like to get away from the bustle of Minneapolis and indoor baseball :) Tell me what you think?
