Kauai Need a/c on North Shore Kauai in August?
Posted: Fri May 9, 2008 09:24 PM UTC
We are taking (finally) the teenagers for a week-long trip to Kauai at the end of August. Don't want to do much - just sit and watch the clouds roll by. We'd like to rent a house for the six of us near the beach. Will we need a/c? and where do we want to be? Two of the kids surf, two like to hike (I'm a hiker, too).

Thanks!! Linda

Kauai Visiting Kauai with a Toddler
Posted: Sat March 29, 2008 01:33 AM UTC
Hello!! So we will be visiting Kauai in June and we will be bringing our then 21 month old daughter. I have been researching everything possible and just want to know if anyone has any recommendations on Catamaran tours that are baby friendly. Most say ages 2 and up, so I think we will be fine (close enough to being 2). Does anyone have any other toddler friendly ideas? We are very active and plan on doing some hiking and we would love to do a zipline tour. Is it possible for one of us to go while the oher holds the tot and then switch? Any recs would be great! Thanks!!!

D :)

Kauai Which area? East, West, Central, North, South? HELP!
Posted: Sun March 9, 2008 10:08 PM UTC
Hi all, thanks for everyone who replied to my earlier postings about the colony resort and waimai cottages. I am just overwhelmed with how much there is to see and do. How do you go about making the decision about which area to stay in? We will be going in the summer time. The North sounds perfect because of the relative quiet, the cliffs and scenary, but I wonder about rain and safe swimming beaches for young children. The Coconut coast area and the south coast seems wonderful sunny, but are probably the most crowded areas.

Travelling certainly isn't inexpensive, and I want to make the best decision possible. If anyone has advice or experiences to share, please chime in. We would be traveling with our children who would be 6 and 9 at the time of the trip.

Thanks!

Kauai Hanalei Colony Resort... Waimea plantation cottages??
Posted: Wed February 27, 2008 08:49 PM UTC
Hello,

I am sifting through information for a trip in a year or so-- my husband and I and our two children (6 and 9 then). Has anyone been to the Hanalei Colony Resort lately? Is it a good place for families? The north end of the island looks beautiful, but I have heard than rain and getting around is more difficult? I don't know how much of an issue that is.

I also keep seeing descriptions of the Waimai plantation cottages in the central (?) part of the island. Anyone been there?

The Sheraton and Hyatt look great for families, but are really costly, and we'd really like to find a place not quite as crowded as a large hotel.

Please pass along any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks!

Kauai Na Pali Coast, viewing opportunity exhausted
Posted: Tue July 3, 2007 01:24 AM UTC
Hello Kauai forum!! First time in this spot of our community so hello to everyone. And I'm sure it won't be the last since I have so many things I want to figure out. =)

My first question is this: Na Pali coast: Did research already on the three ways to see it, 1)fly: heli.,ultra. 2) boats: engine, sail, zodiaks,etc..3) hiking. If I do either fly or boat, do we have an opportunity to touch land and hike and explore in this majestic valley or its just a 'fly/skip by' approach?

2nd question: If we hike all the way to mile 11, will we be able to see the same things, and magnificent depth of the valley walls as the fly, ocean options? (I ask this dumb question cause the topography map shows the trail after mile 4 as hugging the beach instead of hugging the mountain top so the human power option looks like it will only grant views one puny side of a mountain and beaches)? Can the hike be done by experienced hikers on moderate pace with plenty of fun/photo stops by a full 1 night stay. (8am-hike to campground-overnight-10am hike out back at trail head sunset 2nd day) Am I stupid to wonder if it can be done in 1 daytime day hike, 6am-8pm?

3rd and obviously dumb question to the people I am asking it of so appologies in advance: If you do any one of the mechanized options, is it worth/necessary/advisable doing the hiking method as well, or vise versa?

THANK YOU ALL! Sorry for the blast of multiple questions. I see this forum isn't busting with questions on a daily basis as others so I hope you expereienced ones peek in once in a while.

Kauai Waimea Canyon
Posted: Wed April 4, 2007 01:51 AM UTC
Does anyone know how long of a drive is it from Waimea to the Kokee Lodge? We were thinking of staying a the Kokee Lodge because we wanted to hike along the Napali coast and go into the Alakai swamp. Is it worth it to stay at the Kokee lodge? or can we just drive back and forth from Waimea?

If it's ok to stay in Waime and do this, does anyone have recommendations of places to stay that are under $100?

Also, has anyone hiked in the Alakai swamp? Do you need a 4 wheel drive to get there?

Kauai swimming beaches
Posted: Thu March 15, 2007 11:53 PM UTC
My husband and I are going to Kauai in August, and plan to stay in the Kapa'a area. I understand that most of the beaches at hotels/condos are too rough for swimming in the winter. Is this true in the summer as well? Are there any beaches safe for swimming near lodgings? thanks
