My grandson age 12 and I are visiting Honolulu in June 2010. He is interested in WWII and volcanoes. He's not a beach or surfing type kid. We will be there two days before we get on a ship to take a trip around the islands and we will come back and fly to Kona for more up close and personal time at the Volcano NP.
Other than the Pearl Harbor Memorial which is definitely on my list, what kinds of things would be good to do in 2 days? Where would be a good convenient place to stay near enough to Pier 2 that we could get their from the hotel easily?
I've discovered what looks to be a pretty good deal with this hotel, and although me and my girlfriend aren't overly fussy, 2.5 stars does concern me a little bit.
Has anyone stayed here, any good/bad bits about it, and is it good enough for 2 20-somethings with no real airs and graces, but who enjoy a comfortable, clean, stress free stay?
Also, is it worth hiring a car for 5 nights, or is there plenty of public/tourist transport? I would quite like to go up and check out the North Coast, Waimea Bay, Sunset, Pipe, etc. Would this only be possible with a hire car?
I have a group staying at the Ohana East Hotel on Kaiulani Avenue next year. They are seeking a meeting room that would hold about 40 people within walking distance to the hotel, as well as a restaurant (not fast food) for their farewell dinner. The hotel prices are somewhat high. Is there any place you can recommend?
Many thanks for your help.

I read in my guidebook about this Elvis impersonator who is apparently really good. In the guidebook it says he performs at the Waikiki Beachcomber, but there is nothing on their website about it.
Does anyone know if he's still performing there or if he's performing somewhere else? We'd really like to see him if we can!
I know everyone hates questions about the weather in forums, but oh well! I've been to Oahu once before, in December. I'm going again next week for 8 days. I've glanced at the forecast, and although it's still warm, almost everyday has chances of rain (20%-60%). The forecast, however, only goes up until the day before we leave.
So I'm just wondering, is it really rainy this time of year? Should I expect to be trying to find thing to do inside? Or will it just be a quick sprinkle and not much to worry about?
I'll be leaving a snowy city for Hawaii, so I'm just really hoping to be able to spend lots of time on the beach! :)
Puka Dogs Posted: Thu October 8, 2009 03:17 AM UTC
I heard this placed discussed on the radio: http://www.pukadog.com
Has anyone tried it? If so, what do you think? In terms of overall taste and enjoyment, how do these hot dogs compare to ones you've tried in other cities?
Is the real estate in Hawaii as bad as in Europe and the rest of the world? Bad in a sense that it's way too cheap?
We are travelling to Hawaii and staying in Waikiki next Monday 14th of September. There is 3 families (all related) consisting of 6 adults and 5 teenagers and 1 baby.
What can people suggest about shopping. Where are the bargains. Where are the value for money food eateries.
And for the guys where are the best places to grab a coldy.
What places should we steer clear of?
Basically after any advice you can offer. We will be doing the Pearl Harbour tour as I don't believe you can come to Hawaii without paying your respects.
Do any of you know where to throw a barbecue in Waikiki. I have read that Fort DeRussy has grills and is a nice place. Any suggestions for places to grill, and for good food to serve and where I can buy it. I'm going to Costco for steaks, dog and burgers. Any cool deli suggestions or food I should serve:

My partner and I are thiking about a trip to Honolulu in Novemember/December. Is the weather warm although it's heading in to Americas's winter? Also we are looking at budget accommodation in Waikiki, however walking distance to beach, food, restaurants, bars, markets, shopping etc. Any suggestions?
Hi! Our son will be marrying at Waimanalo Beach next summer. We are looking for accommodations for the wedding party (approximately 12) and wondered what hotels or condos might be in the area. All 12 do not have to stay at the same place. Are the Turtle Bay Resort condos a reasonable distance from Waimanalo? My son's intended prefers NOT to stay in the city areas.
Any help will be appreciated!
grocery store Posted: Sat August 1, 2009 10:47 PM UTC
I will be staying in a house in the North Shore area, the rental company indicated that Haleiwa has only one grocery store. Is is "better" to stop on the way from the airport to purchase groceries in Honolulu (or thereabouts), or should I just wait until I get to the North shore? Will there be a "Farmer's Market" to purchase local fruits and vegetables? thanks so much!
I'll be in Honolulu on a cruise in late Sept. We wish to go to the Arizona by bus, rather than spend the astronomical price that Carnival charges. Where would we pick up the bus? Is it somewhere close to the Carnival cruise pier?
Is there a single transit bus that will take you around the entire island without transfers? or would you recommend a tour bus?
Also, are there certain streets or areas of Waikiki one should avoid? (We have something called "East Hastings" in downtown that is not a nice area ie drugs, homeless etc)
Aloha, I have a question on hotel room limits in Waikiki. We are planning to travel to Waikiki in late November. There will be 2 adults and 3 children all aged under 5. It would seem that the extra child is cutting down our options in terms of where we can stay. Are these limits set by the Hotel themselves or is this a legal requirement. One of the hotels we looked at has a limit of 4 guests but has 2 double beds and a pull out sofa bed. I would like to think that this would be more than enough for us.
I booked my room (Hilton Resort and Spa) through a travel agent, I am not sure what room or view I have, should I expect to be in the cheapest room available? Will my Travel Agent know what view/room? Should I ask for an upgrade? I want a great view and a really nice room. Does the hotel automatically upgrade once I arrive? Let me know, I want this to be the best vacation ever--since I am taking my mom on HER dream vacation; she is 71 years old and has wanted to go to Hawaii since she was a young girl. Thanks
I will be staying in Oahu June 6-13. I am looking for a place to stay that is a bargain. I don't want to stay in a dump, a good clean room fairly renovated will do. I'm looking to do some snorkeling, beach, biking...
Any recommendations??? Thanks so much.
Kayak Rental Posted: Tue May 12, 2009 06:04 PM UTC
Can anyone suggest places to rent 2 person Kayaks in the North Shore area? I know about SeaNSurf but was wondering if there are any cheaper places. We need 3 - 2 seat Kayaks for 1/2 a day. SeaNSurf will not let us reserve them so just want some other options in case they are out! Thank you!
We are returning to Hawaii (we went in 2005) at the end of June and currently looking at our lodging options. Anybody knows how much it would cost for a taxi from Honolulu Airport to Kailua??
Once there, I think there is a bus route that goes through Kailua and we can get pretty much around the island from there by bus, right?
Would it be better to rent a car? We want to look at saving some $$$ so we thought we could rent a car only when needed once in Kailua.
All the guides I've read say not to leave valuables in your rental car on Oahu, because of all the car break-ins. My question is, what do you do with your stuff if you drive to a beach and go swimming? My husband and I are going alone and won't have anyone to watch our stuff on the beach. I know you can get waterproof fannypacks for things like your wallet, but my husband will be bringing with him a big backpack with expensive camera equipment. I've looked into travel insurance but couldn't find anything that covered theft for a higher value than about $500, which wouldn't nearly cover the cost of replacing his equipment. Leaving the camera stuff at the hotel would defeat the purpose of bringing it with us at all, so... Any advice???
Thank you for all you have shared here! My hubbie and I are leaving Boston, MA for Oahu on Friday! We'll be staying in Waikiki for 7 days and are thinking about heading over to the Big Island to see the volcanos. Any recommendations for how/who to go with? (or the also helpful- who not to go with?) Is there another day trip off Oahu that you would say we shouldn't miss- Just in case we never get to go back?
Has anyone rented an apartment or holiday home in honolulu over staying at a hotel?
Where would I start to look to find one of these?
is the a classifieds web page advertising this sort of thing any one knows about?
thanks for help
Aloha-- We are to visit Honolulu and stay in the Waikiki area this fall. Since we are on a tight budget I am looking for free (or really inexpensive) things to do while there. Any suggestions or websites to check on would be appreciated. Please share your knowledge and good experiences. Mahalo.
we'll be in Hawaii next october for 9 days. I dont drive so I wonder which islands are easier for me to explore. I like sightseeing, walking in cities or nature and I dont care about surfing etc
I was thinking to start from Oahu, staying there for 3 days and then relax at Kauai which I've been told is the most romantic island. How easy is to move around this island?
My girlfriend and I are heading to Oahu in May for 5 nights. We are in our twenties and want to do a fair amount of exploring, surfing, dining, relaxing, hiking..... and are wondering what the best place area to stay would be.
So far we are trying to decide between Honolulu and the North Shore.
We want to attempt to stay away from the commercial/tourist areas but don't want to be too secluded.
