Yogyakarta 1st time in Yogja
Posted: Fri December 14, 2007 01:31 AM UTC
Hai, 2 of us will be travelling to Yogja on 29/1/2008 for 3D/2N. We prefer to do more sight seeing than shopping, at the same time enjoy the local food. Can anyone suggest:
i) a good budget hotel (not more than USD30 per night)in a convenient location, preferably near the train station.
ii) we would like to go to Borobodur and Prambanan. Is it worth staying at Manohara hotel near the temple ground or is it cheaper to travel on a day trip from Yogja.
iii) Is it convenient and safe to use the local bus service to make day trips to Borobodur and Prambanan, especially if coming back late at night.
iv) How much should I pay (reasonabele ?) to rent a car (incl. driver and all extras) for a day tour ?
v) We will be flying from Solo to KL in the evening. Is there anything interesting to do or see in Solo ?

Yogyakarta Reasonable Prize for typical tours in Yogyakarta?
Posted: Sat July 28, 2007 12:43 AM UTC
Does anyone here have any ideas or commements on the reasonable price of typical tours such as Borobudur, Pambannan temple+city tour?
I have already enquired these questions with the local tours on the internet. They usually set these tours (one day temple tour + city tour) at about US 85, I think it is too much.
Any ideas?

Yogyakarta Wesak '07
Posted: Fri February 16, 2007 01:46 AM UTC
Am planning to get to Yogya & Borobudur for Wesak this year & am having problems finding out actual dates. Some people say May 2 (full moon), others that the actual holiday is June 1.

Is anyone able to give me the date of the Wesak ceremony at Borobudur on the actual day of the Buddha's Birth, Death & Enlightenment day?

Many thanks...

Yogyakarta Hotel under renovation after earthquake?
Posted: Fri February 9, 2007 12:11 PM UTC
Hello dear VT forummers,
I was searching for hotels at Yogya on the internet and Ibis Malioboro really appealed to me. However, when I tried to book the hotel, I was informed that it is under renovation. Is this true? How about other hotels such as Novotel or Mercure Grand Hotel? Are they also under renovation?
I really appreciate everyone's replies and I thank everyone in advance.

Dear VT forummers,

Am planning to go to Yogya soon and would like to enquire about the approximate day tour prices per person for tourist attractions such as Borobudur, Prambanan, Mount Merapi, etc.

Where can I book these tours? At the hotel or Maliaboro street? Which/where is cheaper?

BTW, has Prambanan reopened to tourists?

Thanks so much.

Hello everyone,

I need help with Yogya's accomodation. I'll be arriving Yogya on the 26th July (morning) by train. Where is the best place to stay? I've searched the internet for hotels but there are many confusing rates and reviews. I just need a clean room and clean adjoining toilet with basic facilities such as TV, air-conditioned room and a kettle. My budget is around IDR 200,000.

Thank you for your replies.

Yogyakarta To go or not to go
Posted: Mon June 12, 2006 02:31 PM UTC
Dear all,

I have a flight to Solo by Air Asia for 6-11/7 mainly to visit Yogja and Borobudur. With the earthquake and volcano rumblings, I've been advised to forget the trip. Can anyone tell me a bit about the situation? Air Asia claims that they continue to fly to Solo and there are no problems there.

I'm sorry if this question sounds insensitive.

Yogyakarta NEED RENTAL CAR INFO - Joining Earthquake Relief June 15th
Posted: Sat June 3, 2006 04:43 AM UTC
I am flying in from Bangkok (I'm an American) to join the relief effort following the recent earthquake. I am looking for someone that knows the area and who can provide information on rental cars in Yogya. I can already find the large rental car companies (Budget, Avis, etc) but would rather rent from a local outfit. They are usually cheaper and I'd rather give back to the locals than large corporations.

I need this information very quickly so I can arrange things.

I'm looking for something like an Isuzu 4-door Pickup or mid-size SUV. If I have to sleep in it, I'll need the room.

Please let me know if you can help. I can also be directly written to at "jm (at) johnmoretti (dot) com".

Your help is much appreciated. And if you are in the area and want to join me, let me know. I'm an independent traveler and travel alone.

Yogyakarta Digital Photos - cost of developing or transferring to disk
Posted: Sun April 30, 2006 08:25 AM UTC
We're travelling to Yogya in September this year and have just bought a new digital camera to take with us (it's our first foray from film to digital). Wondering whether anyone would have any idea of the cost of prints and of transferring digital card memory to disk in Yogyakarta (and Bali).

Any recommendations on shops to use - last time we were in Yogya (2003) we found the Kodak shop on Malioboro to be great - cheaper than the Fuji shops...

Thanks in advance,

Yogyakarta Yogyakarta Tour Package from Singapore
Posted: Thu April 20, 2006 09:24 AM UTC
I am thinking of visiting Yogya on May during Vesak Holiday. I am coming from Singapore and might take the package offered by Garuda.

Here is the deal:

"We are pleased to introduce our 3 days 2 nights free & easy Hyatt Regency YogYakarta with 3rd night stay free based on single occupancy at SGD448 per person excluding taxes. Taxes will be SGD85 per person which included Singapore airport tax and fuel surcharge. Please note that taxes is subject to changes without any prior notices.

Kindly note that there is no refund value should you forfeit the free night stay.

Package details as follows:
Return economy class ticket from Singapore to YogYakarta
2 nights accommodation in Garden View Room, Hyatt Regency YogYakarta with 3rd night free
Daily breakfast at Kemangi Bristo (free night does not include breakfast)
Welcome drink & chilled towel upon arrival
Complimentary round trip airport transfers by car
Free admission to Health Club, Tennis Court (excludes massage/equipment rental etc)"

1 USD roughly equal to 1.6 SGD.

Please give feedback if this package is good. Also, I believe the Yogya Tour (around Burubodor and Prambanan) is not yet included. I need suggestions as to where should I get such tour packages in Yogya.

Thanks a lot!

Yogyakarta Info on Jogja
Posted: Wed February 22, 2006 03:09 AM UTC
Hi all,

I have just returned from Jogja and thanks to the forum members (especially Ofa and Bpacker), the trip had been a memorable one. Here's all the latest info on Jogja for the traveller/tourist that I've gathered.

1. If you're into the temples only, a 3 days 2 nights trip will be sufficient.
a) Day 1 - Fly in the evening, check into hotel and check out Jln. Malioboro; b) Day 2 - Check out Borobudur and Prambanan
c) Day 3 - Check out Kraton, Taman Sari and the rest of Jogja, then fly home.

2. If you're landing in Solo, the taxi to Jogja cost Rp180,000. Buy the ticket from the counter and the trip will be approximately 1.5 hrs. You can take the train but.......I won't.

3. Other places to check out from Jogja includes (will involve more days);
a) Dieng Plateau (full day tour)
b) Mount Merapi (4 hours)
c) Parangtritis Beach (4 hours)
d) Ratu Boko (side trip from Prambanan)

4. Besides the budget hotels at Jln Sosrowijayan, the best located star hotels are in the following order;
a) Inna Garuda (next to Tugu Station and at the start of Jln Malioboro)
b) Ibis Malioboro (entrance thru Malioboro Mall)
c) Hotel Mutiara
d) Melia Purosani (200 metres to Jln Malioboro)

5. All tour agencies are located in the hotels (budget/star). Do not waste time looking for a better bargain along Jln Malioboro as there are none.

6. Borobudur and Prambanan is awesome. Entrance fee for foreigners are US$10 for Prambanan, US$10 for Ratu Boko and US$11 for Borobudur. Student rate is US$6. Hire a guide....it is worth it.....and be prepared to walk a lot.

7. Souvenirs made of volcanic stone and specific to the Borobudur/Prambanan sites are only available there. If you're into these items, you won't find them at Jln Malioboro.

8. Souvenir vendors are only a nuisance at entrance at Borobudur and Prambanan but from my travels I feel they are not the worst. Those along Jln Malioboro leave you alone. Becaks peddlers can be persistent but say no and it's no problem. Did not meet any dreaded batik salesman during my stay.

9. Felt safe.....security is tight at hotels (I stayed at Melia) and malls...there's a security desk at the entrance to McDs at Malioboro Mall!!!

10. Eat at the roadside warungs.....seated on the mat and low tables. Sanitary may seem suspect but no problems for me (I even drank local water at the warungs)......try nasi gudeg, mee bakso, ayam goreng kalasan, geplak, etc....they are all great but not cheap.

11. However, besides the warungs, there are few if not nil other restaurants along Malioboro unless you fancy fast food at the mall. The one and only notable restaurant along Malioboro is the Legian Garden Restaurant.....food is Okay....located on building next to Malioboro mall.....need a bit of sprucing up though.

12. Take the becak....they are fun and easy not to mention cheap (please bargain).....Malioboro area is Rp2,000 to Rp3,000.....Malioboro to Kraton is Rp5,000 to Rp6,000.

Yogyakarta Visiting Yogyakarta - Please Assist
Posted: Thu January 26, 2006 01:20 AM UTC
Hi all,

I will be visiting Yogyakarta via Solo in early February. I would appreciate if someone could assist me in providing the following information for my visit there:-

a) Is it a good time to visit Yogyakarta now? Is it raining season? I plan to visit Borobudur, Prambanan and Mount Merapi. If now is the raining season, please give me some advice on what to do so that I can still enjoy my visit there.

b) What is the best way to go to Yogyakarta from Solo? Train or taxi? What is the reasonable price to pay if I am using train or taxi? If I am using the train, what is the name of the train and where can I take it in Solo?

c) What is the reasonable price to pay for each tour package to Borobudur, Prambanan and Mount Merapi? Any recommendation for a reliable tour agent?

d) What is the area that I should avoid walking at night in Yogyakarta?

e) What is the best place to eat and the best place to hang out for drinks, good live music and meeting people?

f) What is the best way to look around Yogyakarta? Walking or taking bicycle? If I am taking bicycle and would like to stop at some nice places, do I risk my bicycle being stolen? What is the reasonable price to pay for renting a bicycle?

I really appreciate if someone could assist me here. Thank you very much.
