Hello, I'm an Italian Geologist 41 years old, and I've just received a good job offer for one year in Bangla Desh. Basically, I would be based in an office in Dakha, in the quarter of Baridhara, but sometimes with field surveys in Rangpur, Dinajpur, Mymensingh, Tangail, Bogra, and Rajshahi. The job position is extremely attractive and fascinating and also the salary is good (I wuold be payed in Thai Bhat, about 60000 per month, equivalent to 163445.13 Takas, if I correctly converted the currency). I am really excited of this job opportunity, but at the same time I quite worried.
Browsing on the web I read many controversial information on Dakha and Bangladesh in general. Someone speaks of an awful hot and wet climate, of terrible infective diseases, millions of mosquitoes (including those transmitting the Dengue virus), very bad and dangerous public transports, not drinkable water, unsafe food, very poor hospitals, old houses and hotels not very clean, high levels of criminality, continuous political and religious disorders and fightings. Some others, instead, report of a beautiful, peaceful country, with just some danger of diseases in rural areas.
Now, taking into account that I'm accustomed to European standards of living and that I should work there for at least one year (not just a few weeks as a tourist) can somebody objectively describe the living conditions in Dakha and in the rest of Bangladesh? Do you think it's worth accepting such a job offer? I am particular worried about infective diseases. Can someone tell me precisely which the compulsory and suggested vaccinations are? And in which do these vaccinations consist? Pills or injections? How long does it take, on the whole, such preventive cures? Just a few days or weeks? Thanks in advance for any answer. Regards.

Dear Dhaka-Specialists, I'm planning a 10 days stay in Dhaka in the beginning of october. I read that from 2nd to 6th october there will be the Duja Purga Festival. What does this mean? Do people work then or is it a public holiday and they have all the days off? Or just one day off? How is shopping during these days? Public transports? Thank you very much for your answers. Kind regards. Agnes

Does anybody have a high-quality photo of the Church of the Holy Rosary, Tejgaon, Dhaka (the front)? I really need one for something academic which I am publishing and mine is not good enough....
I would be enormously grateful of someone could help me out here.

As I will be living in Dhaka from September onwards alone, it would be good to hear more from you. I expect to take an apartment in Gulshan.

Hi! I'm planning on travelling from Kolkata to Dhaka end of February. Could anyone tell me how much it would cost to hire a private taxi? I'm also considering taking a direct bus. Is there still a direct bus running? I've thought about the train, but I heard it only runs on Saturdays and Sundays. Is this still the case? Many thanks!

Hey VT dudes,

I am looking for a nice, clean, cheap private flat to rent with all modern amenities from end of July 2007, for a period of one month.

I stayed at Ambrosia hotel in Dhanmondi before - it was cheap but not very clean and the service was a little non-existent. So I am looking for a cheap alternative.

Please, please can you help?

Many thanks.

Shuvra

My wife and I are planning to move to Dhaka in early August for a
two year teaching contract at an international school. We just found
out that she is pregnant. She will be in her 17th week of pregnancy
at the time of move. The school that we will be working at
recommends vaccination for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus and
Typhoid after arrival in Dhaka. However, our understanding is that
only Hepatitis B and Tetanus vaccines are safe to be administered
during pregnancy.

1. Is it safe to move to and live in Dhaka without the vaccination
of Hepatitis A and Typhoid?

2. Are there any known vaccinations pertinent to living in Dhaka
that can be given during pregnancy?

3. Are there other health issues for her in moving to Dhaka?

Do you know of any Sufi brotherhoods in Bangladesh, their locales and when they congregate. I shall be visiting Bangladesh soon and would like to visit a Sufi khanegah while in the country.
Thanks!
