Norway Has anyone been on the Newcastle - Bergen ferry?
Posted: Tue May 13, 2008 02:22 PM UTC
I dont have a great deal of money to spend this year on holidays so am trying to do a few short breaks. Just been informed that DFDS do a Newcastle - Bergen three night break. Although it does seem that you spend more time on the ferry than in Norway. Has anyone done this and is this worth doing? I dont mind only having an afternoon or so in Norway, but can you see much on the ferry trip on the way in or is it a case of sea... sea... sea... coach drive around... sea... sea... sea... home?

Any advice/experiences you'd have would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Olden Olden and Briksdal Glacier
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 10:58 PM UTC
Hello, next month we are going on a cruise and one of the stops is Olden. I am looking at the possibility of organising our own excursion to see Briksdal Glacier (not to walk on it) I imagine there must be some kind of local transportation from Olden to the Glacier but so far I have been unsuccesful in finding buses, car rentals, etc. Does anybody know if there are buses that connect these two points and if so provide info. Thank you very much.

Oslo My One Day in Oslo!
Posted: Thu May 8, 2008 04:06 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

I am planning one day in Oslo (of course, a cruise visit) and the ship will be in port from 9am – 5pm.

I would like to visit the Vigeland Sculpture Garden, and also stroll the harbor area of Aker Brygge to Karl Johans Gate and do a little shopping in this area. On my walking tour, I’d like to include City Hall, the Royal Palace and Olso Cathedral. Finally, I’d also like to check out the Akershus Fortress and Castle.

Sometime during the day, I’d also like to plan a lunch stop at an inexpensive café, but one that has good local food and a nice view. Outdoor would be preferred, but I am flexible. Has anyone heard of the café Vin Og or have an opinion of it? Actually, I don’t even mind taking food to go, I love seafood, and I have heard that seafood is available to “buy” in some outdoor stalls.

I will not have local currency when I first get off the ship, so will I need to find an ATM or can I purchase public transportation in Euros or using a credit card? I love walking and don’t mind walking between sites (if the distance is reasonable) so that’s an option too.

Can anyone suggest a good itinerary to pack this all in -in one (relatively non-stressful) day?

Thanks very much,
Jeana

Norway Somewhere to go hiking with train/bus access?
Posted: Tue May 6, 2008 09:54 AM UTC
Hi everyone. My friend and I will be in Norway (primarily Oslo) for a few days at the end of June. We'd love the chance to get away to see either the Fjords or just to be able to go hiking somewhere in the mountains for a day, as time is limited. Unfortunately cost is also limited as we're students so trying to holiday on a shoestring. Is it possible to get the train/bus to somewhere relatively near to Oslo where we could do this? We're prepared to travel a maximum of 4 hours each way so long as we arrive at a decent hour to go hiking!
Thanks :-)

Oslo airport to thon hotel munch: will a bus get me closer?
Posted: Mon May 5, 2008 01:09 AM UTC
looks like the train would leave us about a kilometre from the hotel, more than I'd like for a tired four year old -- the hotel site says a bus is nearby, but I can't figure out which this is. On the visit oslo site, there is mentioned an airport express bus and flubussekpressen. I can't make head or tails out of the latter, and the route for the former shows it starting at the airport and ending at the SAS hotel. Can anyone advise how I can get close to the Thon Hotel Munch from the airport, without using a taxi?

many thanks

Oslo Region Torp Express bus timetable
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 04:05 PM UTC
I am flying from Oslo Torp to Glasgow by Ryanair at 09.25am on Sunday 18 May. Torp Express website says that their daily bus service from Oslo Bus Terminal is timed to fit in with Ryanair departures. However, the published bus timetable does not indicate any early service on Sundays that would get to Torp in time for my flight. Has anyone else faced this problem and found an alternative means of transport?

Thanks.

Oslo MS Innvik
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 02:05 PM UTC
I'm looking for accommodations in Oslo after arriving via the train from Bergen and the MS Innvik, a former ferry now converted to a hotel and theatre looks close to the train station and a little funky. Is the area it is located in a safe place to walk around (Lonely Planet says you have to cross a busy highway and a bleak parking lot to get to it)? Any opinions on this unusual place? Thanks for any help on this.

Geiranger Geiranger Popular Activities
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 06:26 AM UTC
Hi All,

I plan to have some vacation in Geiranger for 1 or 2 days. Actually what I want to see is:
- The great Trollstigen (north route from Geiranger to Andalsnes)
- Beautiful Dalsnibba (south route to Grotli)
- The gigantic rock Flydalsjuvet (south route)

For the Trollstigen, I would like to use bus (The Golden Route). Is The Golden Route cover route from Geiranger to Andalsnes (not Andalsnes to Geiranger)? The problem is that I will go in 28 - 29 May 2008 and the Golden Route itself operate in June 2008. Does anyone can give me some alternative?

For the Dalsnibba, is there any public transportation that I can use except Golden Route?

For Flydalsjuvet, what public transportation that cover this route?

Also, if I rent car, it have minimum 3 days car rental and it's so expensive. So I would like to have some pt or motorcycle.. Need help if anyone knows for motorcycle rental with minimum budget and not minimum 3 days.. Many thanks before

BR,
Christoper

Bergen Bergen to Oslo train
Posted: Sat May 3, 2008 04:46 AM UTC
I want to take the highly advised train trip from Bergen to Oslo but when I have gone online to book a trip, I have run into two railroads--NSR and RailEurope. Are they the same thing or are there two different train trips between these two cities? When I put my reservation information into each site I get different prices, but both trips leave Bergen and arrive in Oslo at the same time. Also, where can I find information about the "Norway in a Nutshell" trip? Thanks much.

Hi,

I'm coming to Oslo to follow a conference on 13 and 14 May. I'll be able to visit the city the 12th and 14th afternoon. What would you recommend for such a short stay? Any "must do's"? Any locals who wants to be my guide (in return for some pints?) is also always welcome ;-)

Oslo grocery stores and veggie food near Thon Hotel Munch
Posted: Fri April 25, 2008 02:14 AM UTC
Hi- Can anyone give us up-to-date help identifying grocery stores easily accessed by Thon Hotel Munch (or via transit from there)? Also cheap (as possible, anyway) veggie food, esp. Indian or Italian? Or any other tips about keeping food costs down. We will also be in Bergen (thon Hotel Brygge) so any of the same info for Bergen most appreciated.
Also, do you know if it's true that some hotels will let you pack some breakfast to take away (paying, of course, not stealing)...is this a reasonably good way to get some food, or is one better off shopping?
takk!

Norway 7 day July trip for young couple..
Posted: Thu April 24, 2008 01:53 PM UTC
Hi. This seems to be the best forum for travel in Norway so here goes.

I've read most of the other posts but still can't find an answer to my problem.

Me and my girlfriend have decided to come to Norway in July for about 6 to 7 days and both being students are wanting to save mony to some degree. Basically, we will sacrifice comfort for the chance to see more of the country or part of country we choose to stay.

So hostels and the like are what we are looking for.

We will be arriving in Bergen and from what I can see, hostels are available for arounf £25 per night? This is great, but one thing that attracted us there was the fjords and pulprit rock etc. How can we incorporate cheap hostels, fjord cruizes, maybe another city and tours on a budget (probably not?)..

The NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL tour looks ok, but one thing that put me off was the idea of not having freedom to roam etc (or have I misunderstood that?)

Are their any of 'tours' that offer a little flexibility, freedom and at a good price??

I look forward to your kind replys.

We have to be on a 7am flite from Flesland airport, July 3 thru Lufthansa. Does the airport bus begin its run this early from Bergen, probably we would need to get on it by 5:30 am. Are taxis available at this time and what would be the approximate cost for two people? Thank you, Wilmathecat

Norway Suggested Itinerary?
Posted: Wed April 23, 2008 07:57 PM UTC
Hi all

We plan to camp and drive around Norway for 9 days in May. We have the start and end points but I'm hoping someone could suggest a route with the car between. I'm not sure how far North we can head given we need to drive all the way back to Olso at the end. We enjoy hiking and the main things we want to enjoy is the scenery and fjords.

Day 1 Arrive in Oslo and take the train to Bergen (7 hours)
Day 2 Bergen
Day 3 Pick up car in Bergen drive to .....
Day 4
Day 5
Day 6
Day 7
Day 8 Drive back to Oslo to return car.
Day 9 Oslo

Any suggestions would be most welcome
cheers

Akershus Rooms in Lillestrom?
Posted: Sun April 20, 2008 01:59 AM UTC
Hello,

I'm planning to spend 1-2 months in Lillestrom (or the places close to Lillestrom), starting from July. My days are flexible. Do you have any idea on where to search for a house in Lillestrom for that period? I would really appreciate your help -also, if you have any links for houses in Lillestrom will be a great help. I've so far sent e-mails to the local agencies but they don't rent short term..Also, if you know anybody renting a room or a floor in his/her house, I'm interested.

Thanks in advance.

Oslo Ski jump tower Holmenkollen

Hi,

In the beginning of June we're going to Oslo. I've read that the Holmenkollen ski jump tower will be torn down by the end of the Summer 2008. Have the works started already or will they have started when we're there? And is the museum closed also then?

Bergen July visit
Posted: Mon April 14, 2008 04:30 PM UTC
Hi,

I'll be in Norway in the first part of July to see the Sogneforden.I'll be on an individual tour. The tour ends in Bergen.

I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to stay in Bergen for a day or two. If not, I'm planning to return to Oslo from Bergen on an overnight train two and a half hours after the tour has ended.

Also, what would the weather be like during that part of the year?
