Kolkata (Calcutta) Leaving Calcutta
Posted: Tue November 7, 2006 07:12 AM UTC
Hi guys,

Once Calcutta has chewed me up and spat me out, my main aim in life will be to get to the cool carved caves and temples in and around Ajanta in the west of the country (there is once temple beginning with K but i don't have my book right this minute but it's in the same area). I don't have oodles of time or money and it is highly unlikely that i will fly so I would like to know your ideas and suggestions about the best way to get WAAAAAAYY across this massive country. I know there are trains that go south down the east coast to Puri etc. so i could stop there then go directly west, maybe one other stop would be necessary. I could also travel in a kind of diagonal line and figure I would need to stop in at least 2 places cos of the distance. I freely admit that I know practically nothing about this middle bit of the country. I would like information and only have 3 major concerns: 1) where are good transport hubs
2) where are the 'hidden gems' that fools like me have never heard of or places where you can chill and get a break from the choas of the cities 3)places that are not worth stopping/have nothing of interest to tourists/in general should be avoided.

So, I know that is a lot to ask but I'm sure the India junkies among the VT crew will have some suggestions.

Hope you can help!!
Thanks a million, Jan :)

We are trying to book a hotel at Darjeeling during mid-October, and we sent several emails and did not receive any response back from those hotels. Can anyone suggest one or two reliable travel agents for our hotel booking? Is direct-booking cheaper than agent-booking, any tips? Thanks.

Kolkata (Calcutta) Pet friendly hotels in Calcutta/Kolkatta & transportation
Posted: Thu June 8, 2006 01:23 PM UTC
Hey everyone. I will be in Calcutta next week June 16 and have to stay there for the night before I fly to Bhutan the next morning. I am looking for a hotel close to the international airport (CCU) but the clencher is that I will have my 3 animals with me...1 cat, 1 medium size dog, and 1 extra large dog.

Anyone have any suggestions on a reasonably priced hotel near the airport or anywhere close that will allow the animals - preferably with a pool? Also, I need to find a taxi service of some sort which can accomodate me, my friend, luggage, all my animals, and the kennels (BIG!) that I am bringing them in.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!! Jamie

Kolkata (Calcutta) Western style shops in Calcutta
Posted: Thu February 9, 2006 11:18 AM UTC
Hi,
I will be posted in Kolkata for 4 months later this year. Can anyone advise me where the expatriate neighbourhoods of the city are and if there are any western style supermarkets in these areas or in the city centre? Also I have heard that the South City Mall is the best shopping mall for western style goods and clothes. Is this true? Any help or hints on this would be really appreciated and i'll buy you a beer when i'm over there.
Thanks, Jonathan

Kolkata (Calcutta) Calcutta airport closure
Posted: Wed February 1, 2006 01:34 PM UTC
Will any of you VT'rs have disrupted travel plans or be affected by the airport worker's stirke?

India: Calcutta airport closed due to workers strike
01-Feb-2006 02:06:20 PM (GMT) NEW DELHI (AP) _ Authorities shut down Calcutta airport Wednesday as thousands of airport workers went on strike across India to protest airport modernization plans, which they fear could cost them jobs, officials said.

Flights at other airports continued without interruption, including at Bombay where riot police beat protesters with batons to keep them from storming the airport terminal.

The striking employees, mostly cleaners and administrators, held protests outside airports to demand the government rescind its decision to privatize the New Delhi and Bombay, also known as Mumbai, airports.

After a day of protests, the airport in Calcutta, one of India's largest cities, was ordered shut when fire brigade personnel and workers in charge of lighting at the runway joined the protests, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The airport decided it could not operate without these vital services and airport management was holding an emergency meeting, the report said. At least one flight was diverted from Calcutta.

Posted: Fri December 23, 2005 03:17 AM UTC
Hi guys,

Will be in your city end Jan 2006 and need advice real bad on how to get from Kolkata to Bodhgaya. Tried Indian Airlines but their schedule does not fit into mine since I have to be back to Kolkata by a certain day to participate in an exhibition. Questions I have:

1) Any alternative airline flying Kolkata-Gaya route? Costs?
2) Shud I try coach, rail or taxi? Best option and prices? How long?
3) How many days I need to complete the journey assuming I spend 2 full days in Bodhgaya?

Thanks a bundle guys. Hope to make my pilgrimage to Bodhgaya since I am so near.......

Kolkata (Calcutta) Broadband connection
Posted: Tue December 6, 2005 07:25 PM UTC
Hey Guys

I am going to Kolkata for a month in December and desperately need high speed broadband connection for the period... from my preliminary Googling, it seems like Broadband there means 128KBPS!!! Also, none of the reviews I read about BSNL or Sify sound good...

I am looking for some actual experiences with Broadband in Kol... price is not a huge issue (but I wouldnt wanna pay more than, say, $50 USD for a month of service)... what service provider do you guys suggest?

Thanks!
