Bavaria Large scary Christmas creatures
Posted: Fri November 6, 2009 11:54 AM UTC
Greetings to all
2 years ago during the Christmas season in Regensberg, my wife and I were lucky enough to see during a large celebration downtown a parade of more than a dozen large scary monster like creatures interacting with the crowd. In fact my wife was grabbed by one but I did not get a picture. I understand they have historical significance and are part of the Norse/Germanic pagan culture. Possibly pertaining to the onset of Ragnarok? Can anyone tell me what they are called and point me in the right direction to learn more
Thanks

Garmisch-Partenkirchen buses/trains to Ettal?
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 02:19 PM UTC
We'll be in GaP in December, and wondered what our alternatives to renting a car to get to Ettal might be. We'd like to head up that way for dinner one evening, but I'm not sure whether buses regularly service that route, and if they do, how late they run.

Many thanks!

Hamburg Some questions about Hamburg
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 11:59 AM UTC
I have asked this before, but I lost the answer, when we changed the city to go at November,so once again:How long does the train from Bremen to Hamburg take?

And some new questins(I asked about christmas-markets last time, but now it´s the different time of the year)
About the climate:Is there difference between february and march? Is both as rainy and windy and how about the temperature? My husband might have change to choose a little, when he will have his winter-holliday,so we wonder when we should go-I can go when ever I want,I have my own shop.

Is the old town big,and is it lively?I mean like in some town, old town is only old houses, where people live, and somewhere there are little shops and restaurants and so on.

We could fly to Bremen or Bergamo,so I´m wondering witch one to choose. Both one we have been, but when we went to Bremen,we didn´t visit Hamburg.I have been thinking it´s boring town, grey and not beautyful, but now I´ve heard it´s not.

We like museums and old buildings, but I guess there´s enough about them, when I will see the tip-pages.

Hi,

I have a big luggage with a haversack. I was wondering if there is any Storage place to store my big luggage for half-a-day or even one day in the Main Train Station. Can the storage keep BIG luggage? How much does it cost?

Thanks!

Germany Koblenz - hotel near train station?
Posted: Thu November 5, 2009 05:27 AM UTC
I finish a conference in Ramstein on Nov 18 and would like to see a Christmas market before leaving Germany on Nov 20 in the evening. The only one open on the 20th is in Koblenz, so I plan to take the train to Koblenz on the 19th, see the market on the 20th (according to the website it opens at 10 am), and leave Koblenz by bus early afternoon to get to Hahn airport for my flight. I'm traveling with my husband and 3 small kids, so I need to figure out logistics as soon as possible...

1. Can you recommend a cheap but safe hotel near the bahnhof or near the market? Is the bahnhof near the downtown area where the market will be?

2. I've found several bus companies that service RyanAir at Hahn Airport - I assume that's just because Ryan is the main airline there, but I'm flying Wizz Air to Krakow. Any thoughts on which company to use? Or is a public bus better for my timeline?

Thanks for any thoughts/tips!

Germany Lubeck
Posted: Wed November 4, 2009 05:13 PM UTC
Hi

I'm hoping to take my mum back to Lubeck as a Christmas present as she hasn't been 'home' in 15 years!
I understand there is now an airport in Lubeck, however I can't see any flights from Britain there, other than London, which is too far away from home for us to fly from.
Would I be better off getting a flight to Hamburg and then getting transport to an hotel in Lubeck??
So a couple of questions if thats the case, how long is the transfer from Hamburg to Lubeck and hows the best way of doing this? and does anyone know of any nice hotels in Lubeck, that wouldn't cost the earth?
Thanks ever so much
Sam

Dortmund Walking from the train station to the Football stadium?
Posted: Tue November 3, 2009 07:08 PM UTC
My husband is going to a football match in the Signal Iduna Stadion in Dortmund and he's trying to decide which train to take for the return trip. Has anyone walked from the DB stop at the Signal Iduna Stadion from the stadium? It's quite close, judging from the map on the website, but is it more a matter of five minutes or rather 10/15 minutes?

Berlin International Photography Festival in Berlin (NOVEMBER)
Posted: Sat October 31, 2009 12:30 AM UTC
Does anyone know good links I can read up on about this, or just any information I should know?? I'm coming over to Berlin on the 13th of November till the 16th. Initially my plan was to take photos of the newly painted wall pieces, street grafitti and other obvious sites etc. Whilst googling one day, I was so excited to see that the Photography Exhibition is taking place, but i've not managed to find much about it. Any chat back about this would be great! X

Freiburg Have addresses changed since 1987 - need to confirm an old address in Freiburg
Posted: Fri October 30, 2009 01:57 AM UTC
Some time ago we hosted a team from Freiburg, Germany and had a very nice week with them. We housed all the players with the team my husband used to coach, and two coaches plus two players stayed with us. We all had a great week, and one of the coaches, Fritz, gave me his card.

I just ran into the card and tried to Google the address - I will use an "X" for the street number, but this is the original, then the Google version:

Kolbeweg X, 7800 Freiburg

Google pulls up:
Maximilian-Kolbe-Weg X, 79100 Freiburg im Breisgau

Is Kolbeweg now Maximilian-Kolbe-Web ... and is 7800 now 79100 ?
I realize I've had this card for a very very long time.

Also - is the correct name for Freiburg "Freiburg im Breisgau".

Looks right because they were vey close to the black forest.

I'd love to send him a note, but realize I'm dealing with a very old address.

Berlin U2 concert
Posted: Thu October 29, 2009 08:08 PM UTC
This morning I heard there will be a free U2 concert in front of the Branderburger Tor to mark the 20th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin wall. Since I'm a U2 fan, and I remember the fall and the events it led to, I really wanted to go and started checking for flights. And just now, I read on some website that the 10 000 tickets were out:( I didn't know there would be tickets. They can't possibly cover the area around the gate. Does anyone know how it will be. Whether you could still hang out and see and hear what's going on the stage beyond the ticket area? Also, are there any other events commemorating the anniversary at that time, or the period Nov. 5-7?
Thank you,
Christina

Cologne Cologne Christmas markets: practical planning help please!
Posted: Wed October 28, 2009 05:59 PM UTC
Hi,

We're booked to come and visit Cologne for the first weekend of the Christmas markets and would really appreciate some advice on the practical logistics.

1. We will have a car - I realise there is a low emission system and limited parking in the centre. We have young children in our party, so would like recommendations for where to park to visit the markets. One hotel said there was free parking outside it and the markets would be about 10 mins walk from there??

2. A lot of people seem to recommend visiting all of the markets! Any recommendations for what to do first and the order to approach them?

3. Do you recommend the Duesseldorf market too? Also, we wondered about any village markets nearby that might be a nice alternative?

4. I'm sure we will be eating all along the way as we walk around the markets, but are always keen to eat yummy local food. Please do recommend!

5. Lastly, should we just stick to the markets, or what would be the must-sees in Cologne/area?

Thanks so much!

Germany Trying to find Snow!
Posted: Wed October 28, 2009 11:12 AM UTC
Hi, my husband and I are flying into Frankfurt on the 30th of November and out of Munich on the 8th of December. We are going to be checking out the Christmas markets in both these cities but we would also love to find some snow in the countryside or small village during this time but have no idea where to go. Does the Black Forest have any snow at that time of year? Or anywhere else?

Thanks!

Berlin hotel prices in east and west Berlin
Posted: Wed October 28, 2009 01:09 AM UTC
I'm looking to book a few days in Berlin in January. Thinking of two Holiday Inns, one in Hochstrasse, Mitte and the other in the east of the city on Prenzlauer Allee.

There is quite a difference in price, E 100 over 3 nights. I was just wondering why? Is it a dodgy area, not much to do? Is there more around the Western one?

Also I hoping to get away from grey drizzly England for a few days. What's the chance of it being very cold and snowy at that time of year?

Any must see places? My wife is looking forward to shopping. Do they have large indoor shopping centres like in England?
