Have already purchased plane tickets for 17 day trip, now starting to worry that fog will prevent us from driving (with a car service & driver) and seeing the sights and the Taj Mahal! Is the fog a daily, daylong problem?

Sounds very good.

Today I should get my visa, immediatelly after that I will buy tickets.

I don't want to miss my international flight on the way back :)

I am travelling to Delhi in August (5th) and will be there for approx two weeks. Please bear in mind I know nothing about Delhi whatsoever so all advice is really helpful and much appreciated!

Accomodation - I'm hoping to stay at a £20-£40 a night place? Location and safety are most important so can anyone recommend places please?

Health - I've had jabs that ths NHS recommend but is it worth getting a Cholera vaccination for £40 (a friend said this also helps against food-poisoning?)

Sights - if you could list the top three places to see (does'nt necessarily have to be the most touristy!!) then what would they be?

Travel - thinking about getting the 22hour train to Mumbai (for the train experience and also to see Mumbai for two days) and then flying back. Any advice for travelling on this train? British home office warn that tourists get drugged and mugged?!

Money - any advice on how to not get ripped off by the locals?? I'm only basing this on a few friends from Pakistan who have warned people will try and con me left right and center because im western. Also, how much spending money do you think I need for two weeks? I want to buy cloths etc but I dont want to over-spend! (im thinking £500 - that pays for the accom aswell!)

Taj Mahal - apart from Mumbai, this is the only other place I want to visit outside of Delhi - any advice for best days/times to go? How to get there?

Mosquitos - a problem in Delhi in August?

Independance day - I've been advised that it might be dangerous for me to go out on this day (15th) as im British?! I really want to go out and party/celebrate with everyone else, but dont want to get stabbed or mugged!

Going out - sorry for my ignorance, but I've no idea what Delhi/ India's night life is like. Is it bars and clubs? Or would it be frowned upon to be out drinking at night?

Scooter - Delhi's traffic is really busy apparently? Would it be a good idea (fun) to hire a scooter and see the city like that for a day? Or too dangerous?

Via Bahrain - sorry this is really odd! My flights are going via Bahrain and im stopped for 5 hours. Does anyone happen to know if I can venture out of the airport and if thats worth seeing - feel free to ignore this last question sorry as I realise its completly unrelated!

What a first post!

I will be working in Delhi in July.. two things I'm sure that VT can help me with:

1 - I have to find myself accomodation at a budget, but at least with shower and bed, secure accomodation that is! Any good recommendations? July 3-5 (5th check out so two nights)

2 - I have two days spare to sightsee.. I know that's almost zero in relation to how much there is to see BUT.. I want to make the most of it, and if possibly include a trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal unless you think in two days that could be left out for something nearer and more worth while. Maybe it's the one place I must see, so if it is then I think the second day, which is a saturday would be ideal as I think it's closed friday but.. could be wrong!

I'd be interested in picking up some clothes, taking a fairly empty suitcase due to the short nature of the trip and if some real bargains are to be had I don't mind spending a little on them, like £100/200 if need be.. are the bargains really that good?

I realise it's such a short period of time for such a big place and also such a small budget may not help me.. though I believe India is a good place on a budget.

I'm half indian but would welcome recommendations on not looking too out of place in the old city, markets etc. I figure keeping my clothes modest, not wearing my armani specs and nice trainers may help me blend in better. I'm up for a little street photography too as I'm a photographer!

I think Delhi will be amazing, and two days to sightsee a serious pittance! But with the help of VT and the web, I should be able to make the most of it! On a budget :D

I have photos of what looks like a mosque but I can't identlfy them. The building is set within the traditional 4 square gardens with four gates and has a tomb in the centre of it. I know it's not Humayun's tomb but I can't find any pictures online that resemble it. Can anyone help with any suggestions please?

ok, we (myself,husband, 20 month son and my mom) are travelling to India April 7th. Our plans on where we were staying have fallen through and now we need your assistance. We will only be in Delhi for 1 night - we plan to do some shopping in Delhi ( Defence colony, South ex...) before heading north.

I have looked into a few hotels but I havent been to Delhi for quite a few years so I dont know how the standards are now. (When travelling with a child you need to be so much more careful ....)

do you rec - Oberoi, Metropolitan - Hyatt?

or is there a better option?

I've nearly made my made up! I've discovered a train that runs overnight from Agra to Amritsar. That means I can save myself a night's accommodation and do the following:

Tues: Arrive Delhi
Weds: Depart for Agra (early train)
Weds: Depart for Amritsar (4pm train - Chattisgarh Express) - Is this too short a time in Agra? Should I stay the night?
Thurs: Arrive Amritsar 7.55am
Fri: Depart for Delhi (late) on a plane or train, haven't decided
Sat: Delhi - depart to Dubai (late)

Do you think this will work?

Also, how do I book trains in advance from another country?

I'm flying into Delhi on Spice Jet landing in the domestic terminal at 17.05. Would I be crazy if I were to book an Air India flight (leaves from the International Terminal) to Amritsar departing at 19.00?

Should I stay the night in Delhi and get a morning flight instead?

Greetings, My wife and I will be traveling to Northern India on January 28th-March 4th. Can anyone suggest a decent mid-range hotel (20-50$ US) for the night of our arrival. We were thinking about the Broadway hotel in old Delhi, or the wongdhen house in Majnu Ka Tilla neighborhood. We would like to stay somewhere with good food, and perhaps other travelers as we begin to adjust to travel in India.

Also, we plan on spending most of our time in McCleod Ganj, Amritsar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi. Do any of these places require a mosquito net during the winter months.

Thank you for any advice and we are certainly open to any suggestions for food or accommodations in any of the places I listed......

And is it safe for a family of 4 to travel for 7/ 8 hours by pvt car / Taxi to Bhimtal or Corbett ? How much would it cost for Bhimtal and Corbett by Taxi .

Hi there, I've done some research on travelling around India but there appears to be a lot of experiences people on this site...So help if you can, please. Here we go, this is what I've managed to put together so far:

We are arriving to Delhi on the 24th December.
Can anyone suggest a good clean hotel in Delhi? Would like to stay for 1 - 2 nights. Also any fun things to do in Delhi considering it's Xmas?

Our trip is as follows;
24&25 Delhi
25 afternoon jaipur - how much is a drive by car to jaipur or are there any other ways of getting there?
26th Jaipur - all day overnight stay - Suggested hotels?
27th Jaipur to Agra - The best way to reach Agra from Jaipur?
28th Agra - leaving Agra in the evening for Varanasi. I've tried booking the train tickets (4864 Marudhar Exp)on the website however it says 3 waiting list. What does this mean? Should I go ahead and book these anyway?
29th Varanasi.
Now we are unsure of how long to stay in Varanasi and the means of leaving Varanasi for Darjeeling. I know there is a train but where is the toy train and how long does it take to reach Darjeeling. Also how long do you recommend to stay in Darjeeling?Is there plenty to see?
