Hey VTers!

A friend of mine is going to Hyderabad for a conference and I might as well accompany her (we plan to continue to Kerala later). I wouldn't like to sit in a hotel for a few days straight though. So, I'm wondering, would it be OK for me to walk the streets and discover the wonders of Hyderabad all by myself? Or will it be too much of a hassle? /I'm blonde, quite tall, can throw a punch and swear freely if needed :-D/ No offense, just trying to calculate the odds of survival here :)

I was wondering if it was possible to have dresses made in Western styles, but using the lovely materials that they have here? Can anyone recommend a dress maker/tailor?

I am in Hyderbad currently on busines bit after the assignment ends, I am going trekking in the OOty and around the tea plantations/wildlife sacntuaries in Kerala.

Please couold someone recommend a shop or a chain that speialise in outdoor clothing for trekking? or any other shop where it could be bought?

I am visiting a friend of mine in Hyderabad and I want to know if it would be safe to wear my military uniform my first few days there. I only own one pair of non-military clothes( jeans and a wrinkled t-shirt), and I already told my friend that I would be wearing my uniform. Should I rethink this and wear something else instead or am I just a little paranoid?

Hi - we're coming next weekend for a short visit (Fri-Mon). Was just wondering where the absolute BEST biryani is, the best (local) shopping (no malls!), and the best place for street foods. Any food I should not miss?

Also - if we want to do Film City one day (still undecided), will we be able to do the rest of the major sights in a day? Should we travel around by rickshaw or get a taxi for the day? Any other advice appreciated.

And finally, is it as hot there now as it is here in Mumbai???

Next month I am going to Hyderabad for a real estate seminar, Please tell me the what the best places to visit in hyderabad.

I could sure use some advice. I'm in my later 50s and a few times each year I visit my company's Hyd office which is about 2 miles from the Manohar hotel at the old airport. I hear the new airport is about 20 miles outside of town. How much time should I plan in my schedule to travel from the new airport to the Manohar, (or to the old airport)? We might get posted this summer to either Mumbai or Hyderabad. My first thought was "Wow!", but what do I really know in order to make a decision for the next 3-4 years? I did some research on Mumbai, but the internet only gets you so far. We're in Ottawa, so no, I cannot hop on a plane to check it for myself. What I have heard, read, etc. fascinates me extremely! However, we're looking at starting a family, i. e. have a baby while we're over there and the extreme pollution in the major cities scares me. We've been posted to Damascus in the past, which was certainly not a candidate for any environmental awards, but tolerable for 2 years. Can anyone enlighten me a bit? How is the climate in/ around Hyderabad? Is it dry, is it humid (I'm pretty good with heat). Is it a major earthquake area? What about crime? Are there some ex-pats? Bigger hotels, good restaurants, English movie theatres? How about getting about? For any international flights out, where would one fly (which airlines are operating?)? How easy/ advisable are trips by car into the surrounding area? How about catching anything, if one is reasonably careful. Mind you: We're really not the paranoid cliche of North-Americans that spray everything with Lysol, who end up attracting all kinds of things anyways.
I'd be so grateful, if someone out there could find the time to answer some of my questions. If there's anything you'd like add, please feel free. It will be greatly appreciated!

We're in the midst of planning a wedding for my brother in Hyderabad this August (around the 11th). The thing is our entire groom's side is from Bombay and the girl's parents (in Hyd) are unable to accomodate so many of us (say about 50 max). Is there an economic accomodation option available to us? (maybe daily rental villas or something?) Otherwise it would translate into atleast 20 rooms, which would definitely work out to alot!
Anyhow, thanks for bearing with my query! hope to hear from someone soon, cause wedding planning is driving me crazy (obviously not on the cards as a profession)!

I carry a (GSM) Windows SmartPhone I use at home in the United States. During past trips to India, I have purchased a SIM when I arrive, normally from AirTel.

I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can answer:

1. What is best service provider (prepaid) in HYD?

2. Do any service providers allow you to buy/purchase a "data plan" so I can surf from my phone and keep email up to date?

3. Are the requirements for copies of your picture ID (for me, a passport) and proof of address still necessary when buying one?

I'll also be going to Rishikesh & Haridwar afterwards, so I'd like to have at least voice service in those places, too.

Also, this is the rainy season, correct? After I'm done I'll plan on heading to Rishikesh for a little while - Can I pack the same clothes for both destinations, or is Rishikesh so much cooler that I'll need some heaver clothes, too?

Hi, a young relative is relocating to Hyd-Sec'bad area for a job with Satyam along with a batchmate in late June and has no clue abt the city. Need some suggestions/advise.........
1. Best place to hunt for a 2 bed room flat for accomodation in the middle of the city for two females..
2. Best place to stay for 2-3 days in the Rs 500-1000 bucks budget per night..
3. How about local transport..do the autorickshaws go by meter or just plain bargaining? What is the meter like say.. starting fare and per km basis
and if it is all out negotiations.. what should one charge for say 5 -7 km journey within the city?
4. Best place to look for decent folding cots and other such household stuff for bachelor pad?
